This book written by a retired CyberSecurity FBI agent, Scott Augenbaum, lays out the many ways that the "bad guys" are currently going after the wealth of individuals as well as large and small organizations. Scott uses his past experiences in trying to assist "hacked" individuals and organizations in retrieving funds - which he states is almost never possible - lost through scams that Scott indicates could have been avoided with a little knowledge - which Scott provides in each chapter.I would especially recommend this book to young professionals and families who need the entire picture of how to avoid the many ways that a Cybersecurity crook uses to go after the wealth of their targets. Scott explains each of the different cybersecurity scams in a layman's term - easy to understand by those most vulnerable to scams.Good job, Scott!
Highly Reccomend. Scott breaks down how criminal elements are waging a never ending war to acquire and abuse our personal information. He does this in a way only a highly experienced crime fighter can. Scott gives us all practical, powerful, and easy to understand roadmap on how to keep you, your business, and your family safe online.
This book is topical and practical.
I’m no Steve Jobs. And while I do know an average amount about the World Wide Web, ‘computer science wiz’ isn’t exactly at the forefront of my qualifications. So when a colleague recommended this I wasn’t sure if I would understand all of the cyber-jargon, or if I could even relate. Boy was I wrong.Like most people in 2019, I use a plethora of electronic devices routinely, open many emails frequently, and thumb-scroll newsfeeds on social media platforms, all in a day’s work. Sure isn’t the 6 miles uphill in a blizzard your grandparents used to walk to get to work, but it is pretty exhausting. However, I never realized how unprotected I was in my everyday life until I read this book. I feel like I had been living with my doors unlocked, myself unarmed, and a sign on my lawn that read “Intruders Are Welcomed.â€Augenbaum’s Secret to Cybersecurity acts as an alarm system for online-goers, by preventing cybercrime with a common sense plan that really does work. The stories he shares about his time as an FBI Special Agent, intertwined with mind-blowing cyber facts, makes it an easy read for teenagers, employees at Fortune 500 companies, small business owners, and my 91-year-old grandma. She now forwards me her spam emails with the headline “Cybercriminals I See You.†I now know who I get my knack for comedic relief from. Thanks Grams.Chapter-by-chapter, I found myself suspiciously staring at emails, eye-browing the validity of certain websites, and creating passphrases that were criminal-proof. These are just a few of the takeaways you’ll get from serving yourself a slice of Augenbaum’s Pie of Prevention, leaving you satiated with useful and life changing tactics for now, and the future. I never have gotten so much from a book, factoring in how much of our everyday is digitized. I truly believe this is a book that everyone MUST read. You won’t regret it.
A simple plan to protect you and your family from cybercrime. Scott’s book subtitle sums up the content of this quick read perfectly. Being in the security industry for close to a decade, and having known Scott for over 5 years and hearing him speak dozens of times, I wasn’t convinced I would gain much from reading his new book. I received an advanced copy in December 2018 and dove in. The 18 chapters of the book cover a wide range of cybercrime and cybersecurity hygiene topics from phishing, two-factor authentication, strong passwords, business email compromise, and many more. Each chapter concludes with a cheat-sheet bulleted list of steps so readers do not become the next victim of cybercrime. I was pleasantly surprised by the breadth of information provided while at the same time keeping it easy to digest and apply for students, adults, parents, and seniors. Chapter 7 on strong password techniques was an eye-opener for me! As Scott says, 90% of cybercrime can be prevented by following the basics, and this book provides the framework for anyone to implement these basics personally and professionally. Go buy this book now for yourself, friends, family, and colleagues!
Scott is relevant, believable, and engaging. You do not have to be a technologist to get enormous value from this book as Scott innately communicates these complex issues in such a way that any one can understand. If you are serious about keeping your children, family, or business safe in today's technology environment-- I could not recommend this book more. As a technology executive, I have seen the impact Cyber crime can and does have on far to regular a basis. Scott has the most pragmatic, and yes easy approach I have seen. Before you invest money in tech solutions to a tech problem please read The Secret to Cybersecurity first. It is now required reading for my leadership team!
Cybersecurity is an issue for everyone in the digital age. This book is written for the 99.8% of people who are NOT in the IT/Cybersecurity world. It is written with real-world examples of actual cybercrime victims and provides simple common sense solutions that anyone can employ in their daily use of technology. The recommendations in this book will keep you, your family, and your business safe from diverse cyber threats that face us all. Read it and get copies for those you care about.
