Filled with useful tips, information on what to do, where to go. Used the book quite a bit as we traveled about Southern California.

Great resource for deciding what to explore on weekends.

Great book! We live in San Diego, and purchased this book to use when we have guests, and also to learn more about what's here to see that we're unfamiliar with. Well organized, informative.

Just what we were looking for in planning our next trip to California. Valuable insight for places to stay and for things to do! Don't leave home without it!

So that's where George Clooney lives!

Very informative, almost too much information.

Awesome guide! Can't wait for our trip :)

I was hoping for more information on the Channel Islands and Santa Barbara and was disappointed.

need some better topo maps other wise good descriptions of difficulty. It's the best reference around. Unfortunately it doesn't rate by quality.

Great present for new neighbours.

Given to a friend who goes to school in Boulder. She loved it

i was disappointed that the library codes and plasti wrap were still on the book.you definitely can't give it as a gift. and it looks like i stole it from a library,

Boulder Hiking Trails is simply the best book with which to explore the Boulder areas local trails. The hikes are well described and often include a well researched brief history with delightful details about the various areas and characters who helped make Boulder such a special place in which to enjoy the outdoors. My husband and I have lived in and hiked the trails of the Boulder front range for 30 years. We have been delighted with using this guide to explore new areas and enjoy the outstanding access to public lands of which the local, state and national governments can be very proud. We do sometimes use this book with topographic maps, but for the greater percentage the descriptions and maps are perfectly clear.

I liked the variety of trails in this book, as I am interested in only the Boulder area right now. However, the maps in the book are fairly poor illustrations that aren't very helpful, and can be confusing at times. All in all, I'd give it a 3.5 if that was possible score here...

Review

Review:"This is the book many of us were waiting for, maybe for longer than the time since R entered our computational toolbox." ... "To return to my first sentence, yes, this is the book I was waiting for. It exceeds my expectations and it is very practical with an optimal mix of theoretical and numerical topics. It is of particular use for aquatic ecologists, and definitely worth to be considered by ecologists from other fields." ... "One point I very much enjoyed is the link between ecological, chemical and hydrophysical topics. I am not aware of any other book that brings these together in such a concise and understandable way. I completely agree with the authors that "this book is written for young researchers who want to get more out of their data than just description" and I warmly recommend it for all, who are young in mind. It helps to democratise modelling knowledge and provides a highly efficient method to supply ecologists with this urgently needed competence."© 2009 Thomas PetzoldtEndorsements:"This outstanding book provides a comprehensive and extremely clear treatment on the development, implementation, use and testing of ecological models. It embraces and covers the diverse approaches used by ecologists and biogeochemists; e.g. from simple food-web models to time-dependent transport-reaction models. Numerous, instructive examples are provided and implemented in R, a public domain programming language. I have successfully used a draft version for master courses on biogeochemical modeling and strongly recommend it to ecologists and biogeochemists interested to elucidate the functioning of natural ecosystems."Jack J. Middelburg, Professor in Biogeochemistry and Senior Scientist at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology."Soetaert and Herman have provided an unexpected, back-door solution to producing cross-platform, ecological models. Robust, cross-platform statistical packages have been difficult to find. Moreover, many statisticians are not satisfied with black-box programs whose algorithms they have not checked. To solve both problems simultaneously, many have moved to doing their statistics on the R platform. R is a high-level, open-source programming language strong on both statistical computing and graphic output.""Commercial providers of modeling software have been far better in providing cross-platform support than have statistical package providers. Mathematica and Stella have focused on user friendliness of basic functions and graphing, making it easy to learn as you go. Matlab has a somewhat steeper learning curve, but is blazingly fast with matrix operations on large data sets and sets of simulated data. All are fairly expensive to license and upgrade. I find R less intuitive than any of these other programs.""Nevertheless, Soetaert and Herman make a good case for giving R a serious look as a modeling tool for reasons beyond the fact that it is available at no cost. If you have already come in through the back door to R for its statistical uses, then the steep learning-curve argument is behind you. Philosophically and functionally, there is good reason to want to model and analyze statistically in the same environment: Modeling and hypothesis testing both progress fastest when they alternate iteratively. Soetaert and Herman develop a very deliberate set of switchbacks up the learning curve by emphasizing model diversity and relatively easy examples. The examples are the ones that have survived the sometimes brutally Darwinian process of teaching a class based on the draft book. Examples are diverse enough that others can teach from the book and still develop an emphasis of their own choosing."P. Jumars, Director, School of Marine Sciences, University of MaineFrom the reviews:“An ‘introductory text for ecological modelling for graduate and post-graduate students or others interested in making more out of their data’ … . This book is an excellent introductory text for mathematical biology … . It is a good resource for R-code with code for all the examples, figures and analyses being available in the book … . useful as a reference text introducing new topics and approaches for modelling. The book is well written, as are the mathematical descriptions, the concepts and the R-code.” (Louise Emmerson, Austral Ecology, Vol. 36 (e14), 2011)

From the Back Cover

Many texts on ecological models jump to describing either particular relations or computational results, without treating in detail the conceptual and mathematical basis of many steps in modelling: why set up models, what are basic conceptual models, how do conservation laws come in, how are models solved, what are steady states. This book is intended to bridge this gap. It is intended as an introductory text for graduate and post-graduate students, but also as a help for experienced ecologists who want to make more of their data by modelling. It contains many examples, all worked out in the open-source package R, providing the reader the opportunity to practice all methods and get hands-on experience. Audience:This book will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in ecology, biology, geology, bio-engineering, and to some extent students from physics and chemistry.

This book is definitely not a five star, but it is also equally not a one star. If you are new to R do not begin here, the code is quite complex and quickly so you will struggle to even read the code. The book is filled with typos in the R-code which seriously limits its usefulness at times. It does however have an accompanying website where the R-code is stored. In general, the R-code online is typo free. Although all portions of the book are produced in R not all are offered to the user making some chapters hard to work through. The book would benefit from another round of editing and careful proofing of the code. The code, as mentioned by another reviewer, is printed as you would see it in R and so the lower case "L" and "1" cannot be distinguished, I am hesitant to ding the authors on this since they are trying to make it as similar to the R interface as possible. In summary, the book does have uses but it could have been widely recommended if it had gone through careful proofing. Most chapters are beefy, but 10 and 11 are very light.

This is an awesome book, primarily about modeling, less about R. There are many "introduction to R" books available, perhaps too many. This book and its accompanying software in the several R packages are an excellent way to both learn the material, and to explore other related problems.Naturally, the course is primarily what you bring to it. Soetaert and Hermann provide a comprehensive introduction, heavily illustrated by examples. The mathematics is excellent, and essential.

I bought this book to learn both about ecological modelling and about R. The latter was impossible for 2 reasons:- the R code was printed in a font that made it impossible to distinguish the letter "l" from the figure "1".- Beyond this, there are errors in the printed R code which I could not identify because there is no systematic introduction to R, which however would be required to understand the error messages produced by R.As to the introduction to ecological modelling, I got to page 104 before giving up. The writing style is just too entrancing.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Not another heartbreaker about a child in the Holocaust. Yes, but this one has a new contemporary connection. Alternating chapters tell not only of the Jewish Hana Brady's deportation with her older brother, George, from their happy home in Czechoslovakia, first to Terezin, and then to Auschwitz (where Hana died); but also of Fumiko Ishioka, now a director of a newly established Holocaust education center in Tokyo, who acquires Hana's suitcase, pursues Hana's story, and brings it to today's Japanese children. The account, based on a radio documentary Levine did in Canada (a CD of the broadcast is included), is part history, part suspenseful mystery, and always anguished family drama, with an incredible climactic revelation. The facts are inescapable, illustrated with glowing family photos, Nazi official documents that show Hana's fate, and pictures she drew in the secret art classes in Terezin. The one false note is Levine's showing everything before the Nazis as totally idyllic, and all the victims (even in the camps) as always wise and loving. Recommend this with Linda Sue Park's When My Name Was Keoko (2002), about a Korean child under Japanese occupation during World War II. Winner of the 2002 Sydney Taylor Award for Older Readers. This is a children's book, but it is a well done children's book. In March of 2000, a suitcase arrived at a children's Holocaust education center in Tokyo, Japan. There was the name of a young girl painted on it, and from there the mystery progressed. The children in the center wanted answers about the suitcase. Where had it come from? Whose name was on it? This prompted the director of the center, Fumiko Ishioka to set out on a search across Europe, a search for information that was almost 70 years old. I though this was a great book, I never really thought about how to teach Japanese children about the Holocaust. Seeing as they are physically so far removed from Europe would present real challenges. A good book for children to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust, but, in an age appropriate way.

This book was recommended (and was available) at the gift shop in Terezin in the Czech Repulic when I was on a trip. I did not purchase it then. After I returned home, I wished I had purchased it. So I found it on Amazon and quickly downloaded it. True story. I would recommend this book. It is a quick read but very thought provoking.

This was a forced purchased for mandatory summer reading last summer. Both my 10 year old daughter and I enjoyed the book. Instead of reading it in order we read the chapters from the past first and then the chapters from present day...chronological order. That made it easier for her to understand. I would recommend this book to any 4-6 grade child. Tells a good story and teaches life lessons. No wonder it was a mandatory assignment.

Grandaughter loved it. She loves history and is interested in WW2 and the Holocaust.

Hana Brady was 13 when she was sent to Auschwitz. She was immediately put to death, but her story didn't end there. With her she'd carried a suitcase which had followed her from her home to her aunt and uncle's house to a Jewish ghetto in Czechoslavakia and finally on to her final destination. Many years later, Fumiko Ishioka decides to open a Holocaust Museum in Japan in order to teach young people about the horror. One of the items she is sent to display is the suitcase which bears the name of Hana. Her children become adamant that they must know more about this girl, so Ishioka goes to work. She tenaciously goes to the prison camp where Hana lived for 2 years and discovers much more than she'd planned. This is the story of undying human spirit told in a way that children as young as 8, 9, or 10 can understand. Levine does a unique job of presenting the facts in a moving way without becoming mired down in gruesome details. This story will touch your heart and you will be unable to forget the story of Hana and her suitcase.

An intriguing true story. I loved the photos along with the narrative about Hana and her experiences. Fumiko is a special teacher who directed the Japanese children to find answers about Hana's suitcase. I would recommend this book for older children to learn about the lives of Jewish children in the 1930-1940 time period. Even as an older adult, I could not lay the book down until it was done.

I just finished reading this book aloud to my 4th grade class. It prompted thoughtful discussions on prejudice, tolerance, compassion, and peace. I highly recommend it.

What a touching and informative book. My nine year old enjoyed learning about Hana and I was overwhelmed by the story of her life as well. I highly recommend.
