This is what I think about this book now, that I have reread it again, putting myself in a beginners position:After Maurice Smith responded to my review, I went over his book again and found the need to do it over. I have been in this hobby for almost 70 years. I wish I had a book like this when I first became interested in microscopes. He covers all the facets and possibilities of this exciting hobby. What turned me off at first was the way it came up in my Kindle, which is not the authors fault. Because of my long time exposure to this hobby, some of his explanations seemed boring to me, but as I remember from my beginner days, it would have been nice to have had them then.I recommend this book, but it did not look well in my Kindle (Kindle Fire), so I recommend that you buy the printed version, which would look good on your book shelf.

Excellent starter book for anyone new to microscopy, adult or child alike. Highly recommended. As an amateur microscopist of some 50 years, I am delighted to see a new introduction to this fascinating subject, and one that does not treat you like a child, but as a student.

very clear and up to date guide on modern microscopy methods. Having half the book on photomicrography was a bit much though. Not all of us have DSLR cameras.On balance, a useful addition to my collection.

This is an excellent book for someone seriously starting this avocation. For content, I would give it five stars.BUT it does not work well on my Kindle Voyage. The text does not support font sizes or the landscape orientation option. The font size presented is way too small to be usable (especially at the lab bench), and while it can be zoomed, this is awkward and barely usable at best. For execution on the Voyage platform, I give it only one star.This was a real disappointment for me. I have an excellent old microscope inherited from a close relative that he used in med school back in the 1930's. I am anxious to get it back in service and begin exploring. Smith's book is the proper vehicle for this, but the Voyage is not the way to go.Since split reviews are not an option, my 5 star / 1 star becomes a two star.

The quality of the Kindle version is absolutely terrible. The text looks like a very poor photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy, It is NOT worth purchasing.

I had to return my copy....I guess I just couldn't get over how cheap the cover looked with its flat matte black plastic finish. Pierre Berge had the nerve to print his logo on the back - but didn't have the decency to even provide a book jacket. So much for YSL quality. Of course, this is still the best book on YSL out there (for the present)....the collections shown, while not always the best choices possible, were still quite comprehensive. And the chapter on the "scandal collection" was one of the highlights of this book. I would have preferred a somewhat larger book size in order to present larger format photographs that one could really get "into". Also the chronologically listed history portion of the book leaves one knowing little to nothing about YSL the man (who with his penchant for drugs & high living, was a truly interesting character). For example, St. Laurent's nearly insane jealousy of the American designer Tom Ford, who in his short stint at YSL, consistently showed up the great Frenchman with his highly successful collections. Faced with the spectre of the uber-sexy Ford, whose talent nearly approximated his own, & unable to tolerate the huge acclaim Ford was receiving (in spite of sales doubling multiple times at YSL), St. Laurent quickly showed him the door. Or his peculiar relationship with Pierre Berge who constantly bullied St. Laurent to get back to work (St. Laurent greatly preferred partying to work, and like Gianni Versace, could blow through several million just on an afternoon shopping spree)....despite his icy demeanor, Yves was actually somewhat submissive & childlike. Or even the time he dressed First Lady Hillary Clinton in a black lace outfit that exposed her entire derriere as YSL demurred "I am sure the First Lady has the panache to pull this look off"....knowing all along the dress was Hillary's revenge on the President for his affair with Barbara Streisand.So make no mistake - this is a good book - it just wasn't for me (despite the cheap-looking cover & being just a bit undersized - it is printed in very good quality paper in Italy, & has a very useful illustrated index section) but it's by no means spectacular or exciting in any way....that's why gave this just 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. (My final word here is this: If you really like St. Laurent, I would not hesitate & buy this now while the price is still around $50 as I've seen this book selling for $90-100 on this same site).

Book is fine, but box was delivered and left on the front porch in the rain without being protected with plastic. Box was wet inside also.

When buying this book, you need to keep in mind that this is a 1st edition book that came out before the 'new' SAT. That said, the book is a great resource for students looking to work on their reading skills. The questions in the Barron's book are similar in format to the ones on the actual SAT. (The only exception would be the vocab section in the book which I perceived to be different from the actual SAT.) The book is well organized and includes three 52 question practice tests complete with answers.Pros:-Organization. The reading passages are laid out by difficulty-Question quality. (Much better that Kaplan and Princeton review imo)-Practice tests. For such a small book I'm surprised that there are 3 (not including the diagnostic test!)Cons:-Strategies suggested by the book are poor and not in-depth. Don't bother with them; this book is mainly for practice-Missing certain question types. This book does not have a lot of questions analyzing quotes from passages, for example.-The emphasis on vocab seems a little heavy. Kaplan's books focus on paired passages more while Barron's overlooks them.- *Note that there is no grammar in this book. As the title implies this is a reading workbook.Overall, Barron's did an excellent job on the 1st edition. However, there is a lot still missing as we begin to learn more of the New SAT. For now, this is one of the better workbooks for SAT reading on the market. Is it perfect? No. But, it does provided a lot of the basics necessary to prepare for the SAT.

As a parent of a student who is currently preparing for SAT and as an ACT/SAT tutor, I highly recommend this book. It contains insightful strategies to help students not only pace themselves throughout the test but to maximize their score. The suggestions for answering vocabulary questions in context and for using passage evidence possibilities to help answer other questions were extremely helpful.This book offers the most up-to-date passages and questions available that mirror the new SAT. I was especially impressed by the quality of the chosen reading sections and the spot-on difficulty level of the questions and answer choices. Since students are expected to read and deconstruct visuals, the book utilizes tables, graphs, and charts so that students can practice analyzing these texts.Once students have completed work in context and graph analysis practice, the book offers three practice exercises of increased difficulty: this is an ingenious feature that provides an opportunity for students to stretch themselves.With three full-length practice tests following the diagnostic, strategies and practice, it was easy and rewarding to watch my daughterâ€™s scores increase.This is a must read for any student preparing to take the new SAT and any stakeholder who needs to help a child succeed on the test.

I'm a full-time SAT and ACT tutor, so I read this book with interest, especially since the SAT has just changed its format. I'm happy to say that this book provides excellent preparation for the Reading section of the new SAT, and it's a better resource for Reading than the the advice in many complete SAT books.As a tutor, I really liked the strategies offered in the book. It's important for students to find a method that they're comfortable with, and the tips in the book provide many insightful ideas. I particularly liked the explanation of why students shouldn't read questions before reading the passage.Another strength of the book is the passage and question realism. How well passages and questions are written is extremely important, since students should be practicing with material that is as close as possible to the real SAT. This book is a rarity in that the questions and passages are almost like the real thing.When used in conjunction with the free SAT practice tests that the College Board makes available, this book is a useful resource for students who want to raise their Reading scores.

For the price, it's a great help. Good for a "starter" to prepping for SAT. Then need to move on to source with more practice tests.

It includes very good material. However, I would not recommend it for beginners or people that want to learn theory. It is rather for practice when you already have the skills.

1. Great chapter on reading strategies, which is key for all readers!2. Effective practice tests; answers given are Excellent in most cases!!3. Recommend it to all my students!

This has many extra passages to really help solidify the strategies involved in being successful on the reading section.

Rented from apex_media and it was a total mess. The pages are barely connected to the binding and there is print everywhere. Someone not only took notes in it but reinvented case briefing and just wrote on part of the paragraphs. They filled the margins with large print and just made it the most difficult read of law school.The book itself is a law book and is what it is.

Inefficiently written/organized.

The book was in much worse condition than what was described in the listing. While the book was misrepresented, they gave me a prepaid shipping label and prompt refund.

Purchased new on AUG. 7th. I'm 10 weeks into the semester and the book is falling apart. All under normal use.

Although the link to this text indicates in title it is the "concise" edition - when I purchased it used there was no such indication. I am now 2/3 into my semester taking Remedies and have gotten to the point where I am missing an entire chapter of case law! The one case in a section is not in the full version either. I am not technically 100 pages behind because of this failure to explicitly indicate what the difference is between the regular and concise version.

The book I ordered was the concise edition and I received the full edition. Simple mix up, but they would not respond to my return requests and I had to buy another book without a refund. STAY AWAY.

In this book Zakaria weaves together the history of her family and her country, and the result is magical. The titular upstairs wife is Zakaria's aunt, whose husband turns to polygamy, adding another wife and moving the original, Aunt Amina, literally and figuratively upstairs. Amina's plight, becoming a first wife against her wishes, is the microcosm through which Zakaria discusses the problems women face in Pakistan. They are beset by double standards, and lack the freedoms and protections men enjoy. Woven into all of this is the history of Pakistan, and Zakaria provides bits of historical context, from the partition from India to the present day and presence of the Taliban. These threads weave together better than I was expecting, and they create an interesting and very readable look at the social world of Pakistani women, and of modern Pakistan itself.

I enjoyed reading the book, however at the same time; I was saddened by the developments that occurred in Pakistan, specially Karachi, ever since the 1980s Afghan War. While I was growing up in Karachi, it was a peaceful and fun place. I left before the war started, but I have been back many times since then, and I have seen the deterioration of the city only from the fringes. The book gave me a real insight into the events that transformed the city for the worse. As the book described, the great influx of people from the north to Karachi caused ethnic, economical social and security stresses upon the city. The corrupt politicians and military are to blame equally for the mess. The city grew haphazardly with pockets of ethnicity and total lack of proper infrastructure. This book in some ways reminded me of another book written years ago, â€œMaximum Cityâ€ written by Suketu Metha.The parallel story in the book about authorâ€™s Aunt Amina was depressing and heartening, whereby Uncle Sohail and his two wives lived in two separate stories of the same house for twenty years. There was not only a great animosity between the two wives to the extent that had not seen each other until the very end of the book. From personal experience, I can tell you that this is highly unusual situation. While I was growing up in Pakistan, I knew of only one family with two wives to a man. I did not know all the details of their relationships; of course, but it was certainly not anything like that the trio in the book.Zakariaâ€™s book is written very well. Once I started the book, I had a hard time in putting it down. As far as I know, The Upstairs Wife is Zakariaâ€™s first book. I look forward to reading her future creations. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a well written story detailing the poignant history of Karachi.Adil Ashary

I really enjoyed this book. The interweaving of the history of the "upstairs wife" and the history of Pakistan is, for the most part, admirably done. Some passages are a bit melodramatic; but, overall, those are rarities in this well-written and informative book. It is a great introduction to a fascinating culture. However, if you are seeking a pure macro level history of Pakistan I recommend looking elsewhere.

Recent history of Pakistan told alongside and in contrast and comparison with the recent "herstory" of a devout Muslim plural wife. The writer has a light hand and achieves a deft balance of fact with story, multiple plots and character. The story is permeated by the writer's love of and sympathy for her country and also, earnestly strives for objectivity in the telling of its tale.

This was an interesting book. The slight lack of literary expertise was well offset by the relatively rare insight into a different culture and experience. The plot line enticed further reading with a few unexpected twists and turns. I appreciate the glimpse into a complicated society.

Oh dear this is another book where we see so many five stars and then wonder if we read the same book. Please this is very badly written. A great pity as there were some gems especially those relating to the feelings of a first wife when her husband decides to take a second. I remember a Saudi woman I knew many years ago telling me that she would want to die if her sweet husband ever took another wife. At the same time I visited a home where the husband had three wives all living together (against Muslim custom) that laughed and joked among themselves and seemed to rule the household leaving the husband as a mere provider. I also was surprised to read the facts relating to the treatment of adopted children which I'm sure all readers felt most unfair.Sadly this book jumps from politics to social issues as does the time frames.

A fascinating and wrenching view of Pakistani history seen through the lens of one woman's/one family's personal history. It is well written and flows easily, but is not "easy to read," especially if you're a woman or like women.

An excellent look into current life in Pakistan and also some historical background. The author weaves together her family experience into the history of the country.

I'm 54 and have lifted weights on-and-off (mostly off) for many years. I've accumulated many injuries - torn or overstrained muscles, achy joints, etc. I recently started working out again and it wasn't long before all those aches and pains came back. My shoulders, triceps, elbows and forearms felt extremely tight and downright painful. Even with a pre-workout warmup routine, several of my exercises were limited not by the weight, but by how much discomfort I could stand.So I picked up this book and went through the shoulder and arm stretches. I probably only did each stretch for 15 seconds or so, but there are quite a few of them and so the routine was rather comprehensive. Immediately I felt the muscle tightness had been vastly decreased. The next day, prior to my workout, I went through the stretches again, and lo and behold, felt no discomfort in any of my weightlifting exercises.I can't recommend this book highly enough to people who have tight, sore muscles. I spent almost twice as much money on a bottle of pills that were supposed to help with joint soreness and it basically did nothing for me. The stretches in this book fixed me up completely in only a day.

This book is absolutely wonderful and a great addition for every Massage Therapist like myself or anyone who is interested in how stretching works, how it affects the muscles, which muscles get affected by what kind of stretch and where exactly those muscles are in the body part. Wonderful section in the end of the book about different sports injury and the best corresponding stretches to help relieve symptoms and tight muscles.Stretching is the absolute most important thing everyone needs to do, not just athletes or people who work out a lot. Too many people come for massages to me complaining about tightness and restrictions but they either don't stretch or stretch only a little. This book also explains on the different type of stretching and what is right or wrong. If your care about your body: Get this book. Massage Therapist: Go ahead, add it to your variety of books you have it is worth it and a quick review guide since it is also sectional divided into the different body's region so you don't have to read the whole book to find a special area, e. g. the neck, to look up some stretches and the muscles involved.

I like that it also offers complimentary stretches.as a side note- this has nothing to do with the book but how Amazon ships the book. Putting a book in a soft envelope does NOT work. The corners get all mangled and bent. This is the second book this has happened with in the last week. The replacement was bent up a little as well but nothing like the first. I only post this here because I don't see a place to review packaging or leave comments. Amazon- customers pay new book price and expect a book not all bent up and crumbled.

I ordered some of the sports related Anatomy books from Human Kinetics and this book. Though this book costs more, it is well worth it! Great for the artist, sculptor, physical therapist, massage therapist, nurse, doctor, athletes of every level or even the office worker with some aches and pains who wants to work intelligently with their health professional!Each exercise shows well drawn featured muscles (that are being stretched) in color which contrasts nicely with the adjacent muscles drawn in black and white (yet still with good detail). Drawings are usually in two views as needed. Then below are sections: Technique, Muscles being Stretched, Sports that benefit from this stretch, Sports injury where stretch may be useful, Common problems and additonal information for performing this stretch correctly and reference to other Complementary Stretches in the book. It is so much easier to learn when the reader can experience the stretch while studying. Thank you. I wish I had this book while in college, but it's never to late to learn!The only thing I didn't find was the origins, insertions and actions of each of the muscles. I found that online.

This is an extraordinarily useful guide to which muscles are engaged in which stretches. Given the excellent drawings, it is also an excellent guide to how to do each stretch -- if you know what muscles are involved it is far easier to determine where effort should be, and where resistance should be felt. I would like a bit more structure and ordering -- if, for example, you are doing calf stretches, are there differences in effects? What would a program a six leg stretches look like? And so on and so forth. Still, this is a very useful book, and will be a permanent part of my exercise library.

needing some brushing up on stretching techniques I purchased this looking for something that would provide explicit instructions on stretches for both upper and lower body. It fit the bill 100%. The diagrams and explanations in the chapters covering different regions of the body were excellent. A good general introduction to stretching and physiology opens the book up. While I was not interested in the cellular makeup of muscles, it is there if you need or want it.Very well written and illustrated.

I'm in my 2nd semester of Arabic at the college level and we're using this book. Well, using is sort of the wrong word. Better to say we're struggling with this book, because it's just so horribly bad.To start with, as other reviewers mentioned, the jump between Alif Baa (the first book in the series) and this one is just way too big. We covered Alif Baa in the first semester and it basically taught us how to read, write, and pronounce Arabic, which was fine. We got a few phrases and learned the names of some of the grammatical marks. We learned the voweling. That was fine. But, when you open Al-Kitaab, everything in the table of contents is in Arabic, even though it's almost all words you won't have been introduced to yet. One of the first exercises asks you to question your classmate about certain aspects of their life, when that requires vocabulary you won't have and a knowledge of Arabic sentence structure that you won't have.I'm also really agitated about how unorganized this book is. There is no unified area to look at pronoun charts, conjugation charts, or plural charts. It's introduced sporadically throughout the text. It would be better to have it in an index. In other cases, you're given the conjugation of a verb like "I memorize", "he reads" as vocabulary words, but you're not given the full conjugation chart so you know how to use it for more than just that one conjugation. Of course, you could go back through the whole text to see if it was explained somewhere, but that's a crap way of doing things.Really, without a teacher to explain things clearly, this book would be completely useless. COMPLETELY USELESS. And a complete waste of money. If you don't need this for a class, DO NOT BUY IT.Between the end of Spring Semester and Fall Semester (3rd level of Arabic), I'm going to have to review so I don't forget all the Arabic I've learned, but I'm going to have to do that with other materials, because this book wouldn't do anything but frustrate me.Edit: I'm now in my 3rd semester of Arabic, still using this book. Every time I open this book I get angry. Very angry. It's extremely confusing and the way grammatical concepts are introduced is ridiculous. They either say too little or too much and then jump right into something else. It's absurd. I had to re-read the two pages on fronted predicates 4 times and then go ask a native speaker before I understood what it means and how it's supposed to be used. I had to get help from outside the book to figure out what musaadar are and how they work, and now I'm sitting here looking at an exercise (on pg 155) asking me to ask "...who should be able to join the army". We haven't learned the vocabulary for "should be able to", so how the hell am I supposed to ask this question? Why am I being asked to do something that hasn't been introduced yet? Another complaint I have is that there just aren't enough reading exercises in the book. The easiest way to learn usage and grammar is through exposure, for me at least, and there's just really not a lot to read in this book. I'm not a bad student. My GPA hovers around a 3.9. This book is just terrible, and it's affected my academic performance.

First of all, it's not a good sign when both of your professors will say outright that this is not a good textbook. However, I feel it is important to explain what makes this book not good but also to say what is good about it.First--and probably my main complaint--the vocabulary is strange. That is to say, it's not particularly useful for many students. The first chapter is called "I live in New York". The vocabulary includes words like "The United Nations" and "Translator". It's not to say that they are not useful just that for beginning-level classes it's a bit dense and impractical.Second, the step-up from "Alif Baa'" is steep. Generally there are no haraket and the reading passages are often given without context. Depending on the professor, this can be alleviated but not all professors give ample explanation of the passages.Third, the accompanying audios are often difficult to understand. This was an issue with "Alif Baa'" and it continues with "Al Kitaab".What is useful about the book however is that while it presents the fus7a versions of all vocabulary, it also provides levantine and egyptian dialect words as well--so if you're planning on continuing beyond Al Kitab you will have a little experience with dialect.Unfortunately, this is one of the only textbooks for Arabic which is accepted in US universities so regardless of how good or bad the book is there's nothing that can be done.

I recently took an introductory Arabic course at a large public university that uses this textbook. Having learned another "critical language" for nearly twenty years and having taught that language at the university level for another five years, I hope that I can provide some helpful perspective on this new edition of Al-Kitaab.Some of the methods used by this textbook--especially its focus on listening comprehension--are excellent. Despite certain advantages, however, I believe the third edition would work only for a course taught by a very experienced teacher who has already developed a large number of exercises and assignments that can be provided separately to students. Without all of these additional materials already in place, however, the current book/website package is simply not enough for teaching the language in a way that will allow students to feel that they are making progress and mastering the material.More specific comments:1) Many textbook sets come with a separate workbook or extensive exercises to practice the vocabulary and patterns taught in each lesson. They may be simple, repetitive, and kind of boring, but this method allows students to form sentences and learn through repetition. In this edition al-Kitaab, however, very few exercises are available in the textbook, and nearly all of them are "fill in the blank"; students are rarely, if ever, required to write a full sentence in Arabic - a decision by the authors that I find impossible to understand. Moreover, rather than ask students to perform one type of isolated task repeatedly, e.g. conjugate a set of verbs, practice the iDaafa form, or insert subject and object pronouns, etc., many of the exercises are extremely dense, using vocabulary and grammatical forms taught in other lessons, often in forms (like the plural) that cannot be looked up in the glossary. In many cases, it feels as if a game of "gotcha" is being played - the student simply cannot proceed if he or she has not learned all of the previous material perfectly. In other cases, the exercises introduce word order and vocabulary that students have not learned, with the expectation that they will simply "catch on" or go with the flow until the material is explained. The result, however, is the opposite: some of the exercises are so difficult to use that I saw several very motivated learners in my class become completely frustrated with the book.2) The textbook focuses far too much on teaching grammatical terminology *in Arabic*, at the expense of actually conveying information on how Arabic grammar and word order work. For example, in Lesson 4 the text goes into a very detailed discussion of noun sentences and verb sentences, all without providing explicit discussion and examples of how word order really works in these sentences; that very basic aspect of teaching, apparently, is left to the instructor. (A far clearer and more accessible explanation was found on half a page in Schulz's "Standard Arabic: An Elementary-Intermediate Course.") If the authors want to take a communicative approach, it makes very little sense to force feed this terminology (and always print it in Arabic script after it is taught for the first time, without romanization) without providing the necessary amount of examples and review.3) Too often, the vocabulary used in the lessons is not matched well with the glossary or the overall pacing of the book. For example, you will encounter words like "television," "Russia," and "Riyadh," many times in the exercises, but if you want to write them yourself and check your spelling, you will not find them in the English-Arabic glossary at the back of the book. By the time you reach Lesson 9 or 10, you will also encounter terms in the exercises that have not yet been introduced in any of the lessons, and thus end up spending time flipping through the glossary to figure out the meaning of a word from Lesson 11 or 12 -- instead of focusing on what is being taught in the current lesson. I don't know if this is the result of poor editing or hard-line "communicative" strategies, but it is certainly a waste of time for the student.4) The textbook (and publisher) should just come out and say that students need to purchase three different products: the textbook, the website subscription, and the answer key. The free CD that comes with the book was very confusing to me (in many places is it not clear what the headphones icon printed in the text is supposed to mean). Moreover, given the difficulty of the exercises, especially the sentences on the audio files that are supposed to provide context for vocabulary, there is no way to approach some of the exercises without the answer key.From my point of view, many of these problems could be solved by providing an easy, straightforward workbook to go along with the main text. Barring that, however, I can only recommend this edition with a huge, up-front warning that the instructor is going to have to reinvent the wheel with each lesson by designing reasonable homework assignments that do not confuse or overload students.

I received an advanced copy in December 2018 and dove in.
