If you're reading this, you're probably familiar with Bart Ehrman and his work. I have most of his books, and yes, this one does contain some material he's been through before, but overall, it's probably his best work yet. This is a very down-to-earth and readable book, not "high scholar" and excessively wordy. And, as others have said, Ehrman's wit comes through better in this book than his others. This is a very interesting and engaging book, and I'd strongly recommend it for everyone seeking to learn more about the Bible. It is NOT an offensive book to the Christian faith, and it is clear throughout that Ehrman's intent is not to lead Christians away from their faith. He simply points out problems with the Bible that all should know about and many choose to ignore. An excellent book all the way around.

In this followup to Dr. Bart Ehrman’s excellent book, “Misquoting Jesus,” the renowned New Testament scholar takes us further down the rabbit hole of the eclectic history of the New Testament texts in “Jesus, Interrupted.” Ehrman begins by addressing the issues with biblical knowledge and how the bible is taught, along with how the bible is properly studied using the historical-critical method. The shocking ignorance about the bible and how it came to be cannot necessarily be put squarely on the shoulders of believers. Ehrman shows how nearly all mainstream divinity schools and seminaries actually teach the origins of the bible with accuracy and using the historical-critical method, but the ministers and theologians coming out of these schools never teach what they learn to their students and/or congregations. Thus, ignorance about the bible in the layperson makes way for unquestioning faith in the bible. As Ehrman continues he moves through the first 3 chapters exposing the incredible number of contradictions and discrepancies (both insignificant and very significant) within the bible (which apologists have tried for centuries to explain away), he addresses with many examples, not just the textual problems, but the glaring differences in the actual theology of the diverse and often splintered early Christian movement. As he gets to chapter 4, Ehrman digs deeper into who actually wrote the biblical texts, how we know that, and what their purpose was based in part on their differing theology and socio-political perspectives. The book takes a slight dip in chapter 5, when Ehrman introduces the “other” sources for the alleged events of Jesus’s life, namely by using the Q hypothesis. While the hypothesis of the Q document is still probably the current scholarly consensus, the fact of the matter is that Q does not exist. In fact, more recent scholarship has essentially refuted the hypothetical Q source (see Mark Goodacre’s “The Case Against Q” for an in depth refutation of the Q hypothesis). Many still cling to the hypothetical Q source due to the fact that there are simply no contemporary sources outside of the epistles and the unreliable gospels (demonstrated in the first 4 chapters) that tell us anything about Jesus at all, so inventing a source was the supposed answer. Making matters worse, Ehrman relies on other hypothetical sources, namely M and L for alleged sources used for Matthew and Luke. It’s important to note that when the reader sees these hypothetical sources used as support, the reality is that these sources are completely made up … imaginary. They do not exist. Most of the arguments for these hypothetical sources are rooted in confirmation bias seeking to extrapolate from the gospel texts, anything that might “look” sourced to support the conclusion already determined (that the source existed). In other words, supporters of Q, M, L and the like, have started with a conclusion (that Jesus existed and historical information about him is verifiable) and then have poured over the texts to create and craft hypothetical support for their unsubstantiated conclusion. That’s poor methodology. In reality, recent scholarship reveals that the gospel texts contain mostly mythologized stories, and Matthew and Luke both borrowed from Mark, while Luke (written later than Matthew) borrowed from Matthew as well and changed what he saw fit to change. There’s no need to invent imaginary sources beyond possible oral tradition (which itself, is an unlikely source given that well educated men crafted the gospels in polished Greek, far separated from Aramiac oral lore), especially when a less ad hoc assumption explains the data. So the reader should be aware that when Ehrman says “multiple independent sources,” what that honestly and truly means is, multiple imaginary sources. Having said that, one can’t really fault Ehrman for using these hypothetical sources, given that the current consensus still leans that way. It’s simply a matter of the consensus not yet catching up to the more recent, better scholarship concluding otherwise, albeit the consensus is slowly moving away from them.Ehrman then moves back into the meat of this book as he shows in chapters 6 and 7, exactly how we ended up with the books making up the New Testament canon, who wrote them, who approved them and just how divided the early Christian church was as scripture texts were being vociferously debated. He gives many examples of the so-called heretical books that once were a part of scripture and then removed, and vice versa. He shows how the various Christian factions fighting one another over doctrine and scripture led to vast corruption and numerous forgeries – even some forgeries that made it into our current canon. Ehrman discusses the battle for theological dominance and how the ultimate victor became the orthodox view that sought to denounce all other views as heresies (even the original Christian theology) and extinguish any dissident literature that did not hold the orthodox view – in short, history, even church history, is written by the victor. As Ehrman states, the victorious Christian sect “acquired more converts than any of the others, eventually stamped out all of its competition, declared itself orthodox, argued that its views really were those of Jesus and the apostles, claimed that it had always been the majority view, and then – as a final coup de grace – rewrote the history of the conflict.” (p. 214)Ehrman continues through chapter 7 to discuss the evidence of just who invented Christianity, and how such fundamentals of Christianity, such as a suffering messiah, were never a part of the Jewish (Old Testament) scriptures or doctrinal traditions, but were adopted later. He points out that the supposed prophecies of Jesus were not that at all, but were retroactively reinterpreted as the people created stories about Jesus – typical legendary development using irrelevant scriptures from the Old Testament to craft their messiah narrative. As chapter 7 progresses, Ehrman discusses how Christianity developed into a distinctly anti-Jewish religion (literally being the originator of antisemitism), and along the way adopted and created other views formerly foreign to Jesus and his followers, such as Jesus’ divinity (whether he was god) and the confusion over when he ‘became’ the son of god, the battles over the trinity idea, and the evolution of heaven and hell with the resulting transformation of the failed apocalyptic theology. As Ehrman concludes, “In short, with the passing of time, the apocalyptic notion of the resurrection of the body becomes transformed into the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. What emerges is the belief in heaven and hell, a belief not found in the teachings of Jesus or Paul, but one invented in later times by Christians who realized that the kingdom of God never would come to this earth.” (p. 266)Ehrman brings the book to its conclusion in chapter 8, moving through a very brief summary of the preceding content, and then addressing whether such content does or should have any impact on faith. While he approaches this with an appreciated gentleness, there’s a slightly disjointed conclusion that upon learning of the deeply flawed, human forged theology and pseudo-history of the bible, that somehow that doesn’t have to have a negative impact on faith in the Christian doctrines. However, one finds that to be an odd conclusion when considering why one would have faith. Shouldn’t that faith have some sort of trustworthy grounding? Well, when one finds out the reality behind the origin and creation of the New Testament, that removes it as a trustworthy source of grounding for any faith in believing it’s true. If one’s epistemology is not based on sound, credible sources, one should be incredibly hesitant to place faith in anything as being true from such a source, hence, upon learning the checkered past of the bible and the specious origins of Christianity, there should no longer be any grounding for faith in its doctrines. Yet, Ehrman treads so softly on this issue of faith still being possible in spite of the damning information that the historical-critical study of the New Testament brings, that he risks coming across as an apologist not just for the Christian faith, but as though he meant to soften the blow of the preceding chapters in some conciliatory nod to faith. And maybe that’s what he wanted to do. No harm done, but it wasn’t the strongest way to conclude the book. Instead, I’d like to end this review with a quote from chapter 7 that I think best sums up what is communicated in the book. Ehrman states:“Whether one stresses the continuities or the discontinuities in the development of early Christianity, it is clear that the beliefs and perspectives that emerged among Jesus’ later followers were different from the religion of Jesus himself. Paul was not the only one responsible for this set of theological innovations, this invention of what we think of as Christianity. He may not even bear the greatest responsibility among those who transformed the religion of Jesus into the religion about Jesus. There were numerous Christians involved in these transformations, the vast majority of them lost in the mists of antiquity, unnamed Christians, thinkers, and preachers who reinterpreted the traditions of Jesus for their own time, whose reinterpretations were guided and molded by historical and cultural forces that we, living later, can sometimes only surmise and ponder.Christianity as we have come to know it did not, in any event, spring into being overnight. It emerged over a long period of time, through a period of struggles, debates, and conflicts over competing views, doctrines, perspectives, canons, and rules. The ultimate emergence of the Christian religion represents a human invention – in terms of its historical and significance, arguably the greatest invention in the history of Western civilization.” (pp. 267-268)

Love this book. He separates history from legend or tradition in a respectful, gentle, and open manner. There is no condescending demeanor in this book, just the facts, presented in a humble gentle fashion. I am thankful for this book ( one of many I've read), because it's so easy to follow, it checks out in agreement against the other well respected historians research of church history & Bible history that I have thoroughly researched. The facts are there....and it's not easy to come to grips with as the" very truth" that we are told is held in the Holy Bible pages is exposed by authentic evidence available to us in this day and time. If you want historical truth of how we got the Bible and can handle the facts about the Christian faith to be shook to the foundations, this is a great book to enlighten you on the subject of Jesus and the church. If you want to remain comfortable in your Christian faith.....keep going to church and reading the Bible....otherwise this book will very likely destroy your faith and cause heart -wrenching religious strain that you've not had experienced before living in a predominately Christian culture in America, IMO. It's literally opening Pandora's box and many times I had deep remorse about learning the truth as it had profound implications on my social and family life. It took a while to work through the grief what I lost in truth, but now I am thankful and feel absolutely free to live my life based on my inner compass verses what an ancient grouping of letters tell me God says. Freedom isn't always pretty....but I sure love it.

Just as good as the dinosaur counting in the series. I love the illustrations, and my son loves dinosaurs especially when they are playing with cars, trucks, and trains so it's a win-win. It's a popular book in the bedtime reading repertoire. The colors go beyond just Roy G. Biv, but include brown, pink, white, and black as well. I will be purchasing more books from this author.

I loved the illustrations and that they were labeled with the dinosaur names. The dinosaurs in the books aren't the typical T-Rex, stegosaurus or triceratops. They are in the books, but there are some other, not so popular dinosaurs shown too so that the child can learn more about different dinosaurs with which they may not be familiar.

It's cute, but I wish they had made the items showing the color bigger, to have more emphasis on those colored items. Many pages the colored item is so small and I was pretty disappointed. I wouldn't buy it again, there are definitely better books to help teach colors.

My son loves this book, the whole collection really. We read it any time of day and he learns his colors (numbers, clean up his room, etc). The book are like little life, or teachable lessons.

Bought for my great nephew for his birthday. He loves dinosaurs. These books are very educational and brings a positive message to the reader. I have purchased these for my grandson a few years ago.

My 3 year old nephew loves dinosaurs and books and these help him learn to do a normal task without even knowing it.

Cute book! My two year old loves all the books in this series.

We were a little disappointed with this book and a couple of the other board books in this series. Our one-year-old son LOVES the full size "How Do Dinosaurs" story books, but he hardly pays attention to the board books.First of all, the words and rhymes aren't as clever. Maybe the concept of counting or colors just isn't as good of a material as going to bed, eating your food, or going to the doctor.Second, the books are short and the artwork is very scaled down and much simpler. My son loves the artwork in the bigger books but the white background in these is kind of boring.Maybe time will tell, but he is getting past the board book stage and I am just not sure that these books will hold the attention of kids who are at an age for learning colors or numbers. I wish there was a full-size version, and I wish I had known the content of the board books was not as good as the big books. Now YOU do!

My toddler loves this series, but this book doesn’t have the same rhythm to it as the others.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this enthralled. I absolutely loved reading this book, what a great story. This would make a fantastic miniseries! The characters are still with me. I actually am writing this having just finished the book, and I already miss the people, good and bad.Incredible addition to the Clive Barker canon of imagination...I know I’m late to the game on this one. I’ve only read a few other Barker books, but now I’m motivated to read the rest! I’m excited because I have them to look forward to.I absolutely loved Coldheart Canyon, and I recommend it heartily.

Personally I am a fan of Mr. Barker for many reasons, but I am not a fan boy. I read this books years ago when it first came out and decided to read it again before writing a review.First this book is not the average thrill and kill book that people expect from a horror writer. For me this book is more about how fame, obsession and vanity are just as destructive as the sadistic pastimes of torture and murder. The writing is superb, the descriptions and imagery are vivid and evocative. Just as we have all come to expect from Mr. Barker. While the premise of Hollywood was not very appealing to me in the beginning, I did love the mentions of old Hollywood and the new twist on those stars who were taken too soon. Anyone who has watched any amount of reality TV in recent years knows that if Coldheart Canyon did exist it would be teeming with the plastic fame monsters who right now roam the streets of California looking for their next fix of stardom, drugs, sex or surgery. Also the Devil's Country/the Hunt for me was marvelous, if you have any imagination you can close your eyes and see the images for yourself. That is the one portion of the book that really sticks with me. Maybe that is also the most unnerving part of the novel. The idea that we are all trapped in a prison of our making constantly striving after that which will ultimately undo us.

I read the review of this book by a cpoupla folks before I purchased it....I am so very GLAD that I didn't heed them! It is a wonderful and refreshing Clive Barker story! In fact what strikes me as strange is that when I fell in love with his books about three years ago I never ONCE heard of Coldheart Canyon....but I am glad I finally read it! Its awesome, just the right length, and just like his older works intertwining the mystic and mundane superbly! With awesome characters I could revisit in another novel in anytime! I friggin love this book daresay as much as Imajica...in fact it has a semi similar vibe for me! BUY IT!!!!!

Not far into the book--maybe 200 pages or so--it feels as if all of the energy drains out of the prose; the marvelous premise runs this and the deliciously perverse characters are left with little of interest to occupy them, or the reader. Despite all of the sexual histrionics it feels strangely tame and forced, certainly not the sort of richly detailed exploration of decay and depravity of which Barker is capable. He's holding something back here, which is unfortunate in an overlong book.

Clive Barker is often categorized as a horror writer, and while he certainly uses some of the elements of the genre (ghosts, etc.), he is a far different writer from a Stephen King, Peter Straub or Dean Koontz. The worlds Barker creates are far more bizarre than anything you see in a standard horror novel; sometimes this works well, but other times, Barker's works are so strange that their very strangeness weakens his stories. In this case, however, Barker has done a fine job in creating his own version of a haunted house story. Having recently read King and Straub's Black House, as well as other older classic haunted house stories such as the Shining (by King) or the Haunting (by Shirley Jackson), I am familiar with the conventions, but Barker is successful in twisting these conventions into new directions. The haunted house in this case is located in an isolated canyon in Los Angeles. A former party house for silent film stars, it has been seeemingly abandoned for years, until a modern movie star retreats there while recovering from plastic surgery. The ghosts of the old stars are still here, drawn to a power within the house; also here is the house's owner, still alive and as young as when she was a silents star herself. The forces in the house are not so much driven by evil as by lust. This creates a sexual explicitness that may turn off some readers who are caught unaware, but it is essential in the context of this story. The main character is not so much threatened with death (although this is always a possibility) as with being seduced by the powers within the house. This is one of Barker's better efforts, a well-written work that - despite its length - I was able to finish in just a couple of reasonably idle days. If there is a flaw in the book, I think it is in the last 100 or so pages, which serve more as an extended epilogue than a true part of the story. Overall, this is a good book, however, and worth the effort for fans of horror or dark fantasy.

From evidence in the author's introduction, I do wonder if this book was more difficult to produce than his others. I guess it does lack the liquid flow of imagery and energy that some of his other pieces have; but, to be fair, he is puppeteering an immense cast in this work, and some of the clumsiness almost goes hand-in-hand with that effort. Still, it was a page-turner, and had both Barker's shuddering horrors and his dry humour in spades. The book's format is really interesting. A climax comes early, and then Barker follows the characters well into the aftermath. The climax is so savage it's almost as if he's holding you afterwards, comforting you, soothing you; certainly the characters soothe each other. A reference to human sexuality? Well, maybe. The book does has its fair share of explicit sex. And if you don't know anything about the artist Hieronymus Bosch, you will at the end of this volume.I definitely recommend this book.

Although I felt it a little slow at times, this book is another Barker masterpiece. I especially enjoyed the plus size, ace representation.

Amazon.com Review

In the late 20th century, unfortunately, berries are seen primarily in the supermarket at certain times of year, and while this is welcome, it used to be that everyone had a few berry bushes in the backyard: some currants, some gooseberries and a few rhubarb plants. Stella Otto explains how to bring this tradition back and raise lush crops of berries and fruit with pointers on soil nutrition, plant nutrients and mulching that will make your home-grown berries the envy of folks who only see them in the supermarket. This mouth-watering book will get you going.

From Booklist

Otto focuses on what she calls small fruit, fruit that does not grow on trees but as a cultivated, perennial crop on small plants, canes, bushes, or vines--strawberries, rhubarbs, brambles (raspberries and blackberries), blueberries, lingonberries, currants, gooseberries, grapes, and kiwi fruit. She begins with a chapter on site selection and preparation, continuing with chapters on plant selection and propagation; berry botany; soil nutrition, photosynthesis, and water; pest control; and diseases. Chapters detailing the growing of these small fruits complete the book, along with troubleshooting questions and answers, a seasonal activity calendar, and a glossary. George Cohen

I purchased this book, the third copy I've bought so far, as a holiday present for my brother. He has found it to be as helpful as I have. It is a very basic book about how to grow about any berry plant. It is written for a home grower, not a botanist or commercial grower, and is full of useful information. Photos would be nice, but would probably increase the cost of the book putting it out of reach of more people.

This is a handy little book. I read it once a few years ago and learned a lot. More importantly, I keep returning to it when I have questions about some of the plants in my backyard: grapes, blueberries, and cane berries. Ms. Otto has been there and really knows her subject well. The book is comprehensive and covers what you really need to know: planting, care requirements, pruning and training, and harvesting. If you're looking for a flashy, full-color book, this is not it, but for some down home wisdom with lots of diagrams, etc., this book contains what you need.

Good information and helpful.Good information and helpful.

Nice to have in my collection on medicinal and edible plants. Well written and easy to understand

Great book so far. havent' had time to read much, but have black berry bushes.

As an experienced veggie gardener, just getting into berries, I was worried this book would be too beginner-orriented. In fact when it first arrived, I leafed through it and thought it was! I set it aside and didn't open it for another few weeks. But once I had really started to read this book, I found that it is plenty informative for an intermediate gardener. Otto gives loads of detail for each crop that I hadn't found elsewhere. I am very satisfied!

I was getting into growing some food for my family, and one big request was for blue berries. This bood does a great job helping describe the types of berries on the market as well as how to plant. The artwork inside is line art, so don't expect any photo's of berries, brambles and the like.

John Loftus is a former Church of Christ minister, who is now an atheist and a popular blogger; he has written other books such as Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity and How to Defend the Christian Faith: Advice from an Atheist. He wrote in the Introduction to this 2010 book, “As the editor of this book I envisioned it as an extension of my previous one, ‘Why I Became an Atheist…’ … All the themes in this book expand on issues raised there. I personally think this book delivers a powerful blow to Christianity, especially when combined with its predecessor.” (Pg. 15) Later, he adds, “Let me finally make a comment on the title of this book… While I personally think that in most cases people are brainwashed by their culture to believe, the title is not meant to convey that believers have any psychiatric disorders because of their faith. Just keep in mind as you read through this book that brainwashed people do not know that they have been brainwashed.” (Pg. 20)Jason Long points out, “On one of the most widely touted Young Earth Creationist Web sites… [it states]: ‘No apparent, perceived, or claimed evidence in any field, including history and chronology, can be valid if it contradicts the Scriptural record.’ What’s the point in listening to people like this? Such is the problem with all religious apologists… They will begin by selecting certain premises as true and mold explanations to patch the apparent problems no matter how insulting the explanations are to common sense. This is how religions thrive in an age of scrutiny and reason… No skeptical author can offer anything that Christian apologists think they cannot answer. After all, God write it, so it must be true—even if it violates science and common sense.” (Pg. 75)John Loftus observes, “Believers should approach all religious faiths equally with the same level of skepticism. Look closely at how evangelical Christians, for instance, dismiss the distinctive beliefs of Muslims or Mormons… They use two different methods. One faulty method is to argue that since what they believe is true the other religious faiths are false… Such a method…begs the question. The other method Christians use is … [to] use David Hume’s evidentiary standards for examining miraculous claims to the faiths they reject. They also deconstruct these other religious texts by assuming human rather than divine authors…. I’m arguing that Christians should transfer the same skepticism toward Trinitarian, incarnational, resurrection faith and see what they get. I argue they won’t get much.” (Pg. 85-86)Paul Tobin notes, “according to Exodus 12:40, the Israelites lived in Egypt for 430 years. Yet for all this time, there is simply no literary and archaeological evidence outside the Hebrew Bible that records the sojourn of the Israelites in Egypt. A similar problem exists with the number of people claimed to have left Egypt. According to Exodus 12:37, there were six hundred thousand men, not counting women and children, who left with Moses… Surely more than a million people wandering around for forty years would have left some traces for archaeologists to find, Yet not a single trace of archaeological evidence has been found… The story of the conquest of Canaan told in the book of Joshua has suffered much the same fate as the Exodus---archaeological discoveries have shown that it simply did not happen the way the Bible describes… The story of the united kingdom of Israel under David and Solomon also seems to be unraveled by archaeology… David’s son Solomon has not fared much better… modern archaeology simply finds no evidence for this empire or for any of his supposed architectural undertakings… Modern archaeology is no friend of the Bible.” (Pg. 155-157)Tobin says of the Census of Quirinius in Luke 2, “Let us look in detail at some of these apologetical attempts. The first step is to claim that there was an earlier census under Quirinius that was done during the reign of Herod the Great. This means that Quirinius was twice governor of Syria, once between 6 CE and 12 CE and another earlier tenure … As ‘evidence’ to prop up this… Sir William Ramsey … is normally invoked, together with the inscription Sir Ramsey interpreted to mean that Quirinius was governor of Syria not once, but twice… This argument … has been PROVEN false… The inscription found by Ramsey simply mentioned that Quirinius was honored for his role in achieving a military victory. It was Ramsey who GUESSED that Quirinius’s reward for his role was an earlier appointment, prior to 6 CE, as governor of Syria. Nothing in the inscription even suggests this…Quirinius’s career is relatively well documented in our primary sources… we read of Quirinius’s career spanning twenty years from 12 BCE to 6 CE, yet not once was he mentioned as taking over the governorship of Syria at any time during the reign of Herod.” (Pg. 161-163)Richard Carrier states, “There are really only two facts that need explaining: why the first Christians claimed to see Jesus ‘risen from the dead,’ and what happened to the body. To take the second first, we don’t really know whether the body went missing, or even that the first Christians believed that it did. The Epistles never mention a missing body. In Acts no one ever investigates his grave or says it was empty. And the Gospels freely invent stories, so their stories about a missing body could be invented, too. It’s quite possible the first Christians believed Jesus rose in an entirely new body, leaving the old one in the grave… That leaves only one thing to explain: why the first Christians claimed to see Jesus ‘risen from the dead.’ … We know masses of people hallucinating together can BELIEVE they saw the same thing, and such hallucinations can be stirred by ecstatic trance-inducing behaviors… as the early Christians demonstrably were, prophesying and speaking in tongues en masse… Paul even tells us what inspired these hallucinations: he says the scriptures told them that Christ would rise from the dead. So, inspired by scripture, he and others hallucinated a Jesus telling them exactly that.” (Pg. 304-306)Hector Avalos states, “[Dinesh] D’Souza fails spectacularly in his efforts to paint Nazism as an ‘anti-religious philosophy’ responsible for ten millions deaths… D’Souza’s numbers game simply hides the fact that both theistic and nontheistic morality can result in genocide… But the most significant problem with D’Souza’s argument is his convenient amnesia about a long history of Christian anti-Judaism before Hitler and Darwin were ever born… Naziism, indeed, was very much at home in a long tradition of Christian anti-Judaism.” (Pg. 389-390)This book will be of keen interest to skeptics and other rejectors of Christianity.

This is a collection of essays by some of the great thinkers of our time who are challenging humanity to move above and beyond the limited religious thinking of our past. Each states a different perspective; focusing on several historical texts, from Hammurabi's Code to biblical errors. We can grasp and understand more when we put things in context and each author details their logic and reasoning extremely well. Dan Barker writes the introduction and can speak with authority since he emerged from a theological background into one of the country's leading spokesmen of freethought. I highly recommend this book to any person who is part of the emergence of the non-believer. The future is ours to write and great minds are pointing the way!

A collection of essays from multiple writers and a wide variety of topics concerning Christian theology, history, psychology, and more. A good level of difficulty, it is not too advanced for the layman but also provides original and interesting insight for those who have studied this topic for years.

I found this book which is an anthology of essays by various Ancient Middle East scholars to be a facinating read and very educational. However the reading standard required is at the very least high school. It would be a good book for an Agnostic who has questions about the whole religious scenario but I could not recommend it to a devout Christian who would see his faith reduced to a myth of epic proportion.

You certainly won't find such diligent scholarship amongst the writers who oppose the views espoused in this book. I was impressed with the thoroughness each contributor devoted to their chapters and topics and will be looking into purchasing other books by some of them based on their writings contained in this volume.Let's face it: no die-hard believer is going to change their mind because of this book, no matter how well reasoned and supported by evidence the arguments may be. But this remains an excellent source of information for those open-minded individuals who are looking for just that: more information. I learned a lot.

Amazing. Addresses every doubt I've ever had. Answers every question I've ever asked. I now reference it in every discussion with believers. Rock solid, undeniable evidence for the mythical origins of both Christianity and Judaism. Thank you all for putting my mind at ease. Your reason and logic has worked its way through 20 years of childhood indoctrination.

I read the Kindle version of this book – actually I only got about 30% of the way through the book because it just got repetitious and redundant. The authors just rant on and on and on.I’m a software engineer and one of the things I do is write Android apps that I sell on Google Play so I know a lot about this subject matter and a little bit about how Google works. There is a lot of truth in this book and also some innuendo. They talk a lot about the loss of user privacy but they never mention the tools, some which Google provides, that all users should know about that work to mitigate privacy loss; examples are the private modes in various browsers including Chrome’s incognito mode and Virtual Private Network services from various vendors that hide your I/P address. They don’t mention the Android Permissions system that makes Android Smartphone users aware of “dangerous” things an app is able to do before the app tries to do it. Users can always refuse to grant such permissions. This doesn’t mean the book is bad or wrong but I think it does mean that the book is biased – they tell all the bad but don’t tell the whole story. They also talk about stuff that has not been around for years such as Google Desktop.I would like to see this book re-written by someone who would sift all this information down into a well organized and unbiased book because, as I said, there is a lot of truth in this book. I imagine that such a book would be 35% the size of this book.

There is nothing like real facts and historical reality to give perspective. Mr. Cleland has documented this history lesson on the world's most powerful search engine with endless footnotes and fact checking. The enormous global scale of ambitions and accomplishments of this colossus cannot be underestimated and should be recognized and understood by all who use Google. This is not to say we shouldn't use their many resources but if you do, don't be naive about how they may use the information you freely offer them. This book will help you to comprehend at least some of this and should be in every Google user's library.

Thoroughly researched work on the various influences of Google. Chairman Eric Schmidt portrayed as somewhat arrogant and shallow by the author. If even half of the narrative is in fact true, it's a very disconcerting one.

A great expose of one of the new Silicon Valley " Robber Barons" which is threatening free speech in our country by its war against conservative ideas.

Worthwhile read.

Everyone who uses the Internet should read this book. Everyone who values democracy should guard against Googlism. EU's GDPR is a start.

as described

This work contains an important message that all should hear/read, but I found some of the content to be too repetitive. The author made his case on a particular topic/issue in one chapter, but does so again on the same topic/issue in subsequent chapters, with a little bit of extra information added. The book therefore contains less revelations than the length would suggest. Just when the book started to engage me at about 60% (on the Kindle) it ended. It was a bit of a frustrating read, but this does not mean the book should not be read. I strongly recommend it. I support the author's views on Google = "G-d" (omni-), and found the parallels with communism revealing. Google may be your friend today, but whoever controls it tomorrow may not be ...

great book

Just to establish my own credentials - I'm a game developer with 5 published titles under my belt including Master of Orion 3, Kohan 2, Axis & Allies, and two Zoo Tycoon 2 games.I was asked on very short notice to teach a Game Development class at a local college. So off I went to Borders to find a textbook. After some digging, this is what I picked out. The features that recommended it to me where that it included the source code, and over the course of the book it promised to build a fully functional game. Here's what I found instead:* I would guess from his terminology that the author has never worked at a game company. He just doesn't know the lingo - or he's worked somewhere so remote from my own experience that his lingo is completely different. Also, based on the quality of his code and the quality of the resulting game, he wouldn't survive a second at any game company out there. He wouldn't make it past the phone interview. If you are considering a career in game development, do NOT follow this person's example or you won't even get in the door.* The code is the most horribly written I have ever seen. I would expect better out of anyone who has ever taken any sort of class on object oriented programming - or worked on any sort of project employing more than one person. The best way to describe it is poorly written C code written in C++. The spacing is non-standard. That variable names are horrible. For many of the programs, it's all in the main.cpp file. Global variables everywhere. Hardly any use of classes, and where they are used they are monolithic and poorly designed. Ugh.* The book is frequently innaccurate. It needs an errata list badly - but if there is one, I haven't been able to find it. For example, in chapter 1 he tells you that you only need 1 line of code to enable z-buffering. After talking to colleagues and looking on the web, I was able to get this to work (I'm an AI guy, not a graphics guy) - but he was missing 4 of the 5 lines needed to make it happen.* The book also tends to be incredibly light on details. It tells you the DirectX functions you need to call (mostly) and the specific values to plug in - but not what the functions do, or what the other possible values for their paramaters are, or how the parameters affect the output. The style of the writing is also incredibly informal - it sounds like something written by a 10th grader. Granted, if the quality of the content was solid I wouldn't care about this - but added to the poor content it makes the whole thing feel unprofessional.* The quality of the final game is what I would expect out of a high school project (at best). The collision detection is horrifically buggy. The characters don't animate or move at all (although my understanding from looking at the book is that they're supposed to). The code won't compile under VS2005, only VS2003. It also won't run without a game controller plugged in to the computer - but it doesn't appear to actually use the game controller. He's been promising since the book came out to post the fixes for those last two problems on his web site, but I couldn't find them. All in all, this book is an embarassment. I'm sorry I made my students spend the money on it - and now I'm scrambling to find material to teach my class, because this book hasn't delivered anything close to what it promised.

I don't know that it is any sort of ULTIMATE game programming guide by any means, so maybe the title is what has thrown everyone and they are reading too much into it (and/or maybe the first edition was considerably different than the second, as well) but it is a quick, solid intro to DX10-era game programming. If you just need to quickly learn the general basics of how the Windows platform works for game/3D programming, I think it does the job. It goes over the basic D3D10 system, game controller input, the current audio APIs, etc. If you are new to a platform it can be hard to know where to begin. This quickly gets you right past that and you can take it from there. The important part it knowing where to begin and what the basic components are, from there just use everything you already know.

This book is aimed at the C++ programmer who wants to move into game development and programming. It is oriented around the Microsoft DirectX SDK, which is included on the CD supplied with the book. The format of the book is tutorial in nature. It takes the construction of a game from concept to a finished game one chapter at a time so that each major component of the game is constructed in a logical sequence. By the end of the book a game engine has been constructed as well as the game itself. (It a first person shooter type game.)The book presumes no game experience, but as stated does presume that you already know C++, so should be classified as an intermediate level book. The book is divided into three basic sections: the first is an introduction of DirectX and the Direct 3D API; the second section covers game mathematics and collision detection, input detection and sound; finally it covers model building and animation. The creation of a game is by no means an easy task. This book, however is a great primer on the techniques and skills needed to do good games.

Rather cryptic title I put for my review, but the book seems to follow the same route.I purchased another book awhile back: Programming a Multiplayer FPS in DirectX - very well written and organized.Ultimate Game Programming has a lot of "bugs". The program as you go along seems to fall apart, what is in the book isn't exactly the same as the code provided on the CD Rom. The author leaves out information as to what header files are required, where you should place some of your code. As said before the key failure is the difference in code from book and Rom.Aside from the bad points. Good points. I do like the some code in the pages provided, even though I must realize it might be different on the Rom. Mainly because I'm using another book and this to help solidify my DirectX concepts. So considering I have the Microsoft documentation, another book from the same publisher on programming in DirectX and now this, I have to really research and piece everything together. The coding is really night and day too. The book by Vaughn Young, really sticks to appropriate coding practices, while this seems quickly written.

This book is OK for a person with basic sewing skills and though it's a book on "Sewing Leather Accessories", it's written using techniques anyone that sews fabric items already knows how to use. The book is great for someone that wants to make something with their home sewing machine. The techniques include using materials you would use if you were constructing a fabric bag, such as facing, interlining, etc.In this regard I could give the book 4 stars. But It was disappointing for me as I was seeking detailed information for the leather crafter that wants more knowledge of the craft of making fully leather bags. I already had the knowledge that this book details because I've been a seamstress most of my life. I flipped through it and now, I'll probably just list it for sale somewhere.

Not a lot of examples and patterns but if you ever thought of making a pair of leather gloves, this is for you. The instructions and illustrations are really well thought out. It's a handy addition to anyone who makes leather handbags.

Although projects are dated the information on sewing leather is fantastic! Worth every penny!

Fun book, creative projects that are inspirational.

did not like the content book not that helpful.

New and detailed.

Love it
