Torpedo: Inventing the Military-Industrial Complex in the United States and Great Britain, by Katherine C. Epstein

Review

Epstein's use of the torpedo to illustrate the origins of the "military-industrial complex" is successful.... Recommended. All academic, professional, and general readers. (A. M. Strauss, Choice)By brilliantly synthesizing military history with the histories of business, technology, law, and public policy, Torpedo explodes a veritable fleet of assumptions ranging from the origins of the military-industrial complex to the ownership of intellectual property in a world where the divisions between public and private were in flux. (Brian Balogh, author of A Government Out of Sight: The Mystery of National Authority in Nineteenth-Century America)Epstein uses the history of American and British torpedo development to provide a thick description of the way boundaries between government and private industry eroded in the area of weapons development. Skillfully integrating military, legal, business, and technological history, she argues that the military-industrial complex began with torpedoes in the late-nineteenth century, not with atomic weapons in the mid-twentieth century. This highly original, deeply researched book is an important contribution to scholarship on war and the state. (Mary L. Dudziak, author of War Time: An Idea, Its History, Its Consequences)This rich and powerful book reveals a hidden revolution in naval warfare, one at the heart of the creation of the modern military-industrial complex. It is a fresh and sure-footed account of the emergence of the torpedo. By making the weapon's significance and complexity clear for the first time, Torpedo rewrites British and U.S. naval history. (David Edgerton, author of England and the Aeroplane: Militarism, Modernity and Machines)You cannot understand the naval side of World War I without understanding the profound impact of torpedoes on the navies who fought--an impact that went well beyond the navies themselves. This book is an excellent guide to that story and to the technological revolution that brought it about. (Norman Friedman, author of Network-Centric Warfare: How Navies Learned to Fight Smarter through Three World Wars)Torpedo is the first detailed account of the development of naval torpedoes in the decades before World War I. But it is much more than that. It reveals the origin of the military-industrial complex, the fraught relations between governments and private firms, and the tangled legal history of intellectual property in weapons development. In doing so, it uncovers the complicated interconnections between technology, the military, and the law that historians of the period have previously ignored. (Daniel R. Headrick, author of Technology: A World History)This deeply researched book traces torpedoes' impact on the British and American navies before World War I. During this period of rapid technological change and intense geopolitical competition, torpedoes--cutting-edge weapons at the time--disrupted traditional naval tactics and strategies, forcing navies to make operational and procurement decisions in the face of pervasive uncertainty. Epstein displays a keen understanding of the challenges confronting naval officers and policy-makers, and the parallels with today's national-security affairs are striking. Highly recommended. (Admiral James Stavridis, U.S. Navy (ret.) and Tufts University)Epstein has done a remarkable job of mastering a range of highly technical issues connected to the development of torpedoes in the United Kingdom and the United States prior to World War I…Her book will set the standard for further research on the military-industrial complex. Katherine Epstein’s new book “Torpedo: Inventing the Military-Industrial Complex in the United States and Great Britain” is about two things. First, it’s about the torpedo, including both the struggles that several companies went through in the United States and the United Kingdom in manufacturing early torpedoes, and the doctrinal turmoil that the development of the torpedo generated in both the United States Navy and the Royal Navy.Second, Torpedo is about the development of the legal, bureaucratic, and technical foundations of the modern military industrial complex. Building on the work of other theorists, Epstein argues that the real foundations of the MIC lay in naval procurement at the end of the nineteenth century. The industrial demands on naval warfare, both in terms of capital intensive production and capital intensive research, required a large peace-time commitment on the part of the government. The state and private industry could equip armies much more quickly than they could equip navies or (eventually) air forces. This meant developing novel forms of public-private interaction. In particular, to acquire advanced technology the state could no longer rely on private firms using their own capital to develop off-the-shelf products that the military could choose to purchase. The capital requirement of innovation, combined with the fact that defense firms had a limited number of customers, meant that firms would only pursue innovation if assured that their investment would pay off. This meant that the state would have to pre-emptively invest in private innovation, whether through direct grants or through guaranteed purchase contracts. This, in turn, created a complex set of intellectual property problems. The private firms that developed the torpedoes wanted to own the intellectual property associated with that technology, or at least to be fairly compensated for their investment. This meant selling either to the United States or to some foreign government. The government, on the other hand, felt that its investment in the projects meant that it should share (at least) in the ownership of the intellectual property. The government also worried about the export of advanced technology and advanced intellectual property to foreign buyers. This set the stage for brutal IP litigation between the US government and several private firms, both foreign and domestic. That the government and the firms needed each other served to make the fighting even more vicious. The US systems of intellectual property and export control were unprepared for this development. The US tried to rely on the 1799 Logan Act (meant to prevent private individuals from conducting US foreign policy) in order to prevent US firms from exporting torpedoes abroad. Similarly, US patent law struggled with the quandaries associated with joint public-private development of IP. In the United Kingdom, which already had a system of export controls and secret patents, this process ran far more smoothly. On the organizational and doctrinal side, Epstein points out that while we would expect the USN, as the smaller and less tradition-bound of the two navies, would focus on a “disruptive” innovation like the torpedo, in reality the Royal Navy pushed farther and faster on torpedo doctrine and technology than any of its competitors. In contrast to the hidebound institution often depicted in popular history, the early 1900s were a period of intellectual ferment in the RN, with questions of fleet design and ship construction hotly debated between several factions. The torpedo, understood by many as a weapon with war-winning potential, loomed large for most of these factions. The RN also had better access to research and training resources than the USN, which allowed it both to formulate doctrine more effectively, and to feed experiential knowledge back into the system of technology development. Consequently, Epstein argues that the conventional understanding of the relationship between disruptive military innovation and established military power is wrong; the most advanced military organizations typically have the greatest means not only to pursue disruptive innovation, but also to evaluate the implications of such innovation. This is a good book; it’s an interesting book, and it breaks new ground on the role of intellectual property law and the defense industry while also contributing to the literature on military organizations and innovation. But this book ends up being about two different things; the development of naval doctrine in the early twentieth century in the RN and the USN, and the development of modern intellectual property law. There are some people that are interested in both of these things (me!), but that number is extremely limited. Many readers are going to find particular parts of the story intensely interesting, but will skip some of the other chapters. For my own part, I found the intellectual property angle much more interesting than the naval doctrine angle, although that’s likely because of the nature of my current project.I can heartily recommend Torpedo, and indeed I suspect that scholars of the history of the modern military industrial complex will find it indispensible. At the same time, the transition between the two foci will be a struggle for a lot of readers.

Excellent book detailing the complexities of developing a weapon between the Private sector and the Gov't. A 'must read' book.

The author of this book took the time to do much research and it shows. I feel this is a must read book for military historians who want to know all there is to know about the torpedo.

This should be required reading. A great way to understand how the U.S. government got to be the way that it is, especially in the way it spends money in defense and technology.

Written by an author with excellent editing skills, this is a book in search of a reason for existence. If you are looking for an adequate history of the automobile torpedo, pass this one by. The author gets hung up on some of the patent disputes on these state of the art cruise missiles, and never lets go.There are sone diagrams of the Whitehead weapon, and there is more than a little history of the ealry production of the things by firms like Bliss, but that doesn't make up for the lack of historic context, and the poorly structured miilitary history included. For a better reference source, check out the more recent book fron the Naval Institute Press on the topic. Still not perfect, but a lot more comprehensive, and costing in the same range.Nice cover photo, however...

VERY IMPORTANT RISK MANAGEMENT , QC DESIGN ISSUES RE THE US/USN DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, TESTING OF TORPEDOES FROM INCEPTION UP TO AND INDLUDING WW II WHERE THEY STILL HAD A 50% FAILURE RATE, THUS JEOPARDIZING THEIR SHIP'S CREW COMPLEMENT SAFETY. GERMAN TORPEDOES UTILIZED A PROXIMITY FUESE, DESIGNED TO ACTIVATE WHEN THE TORPEDO WAS NOT FIRED AGAINST THE HULL OF THE SHIP BUT UNDER THE SHIP, SO THAT THE CONNETIC ENERGY OF THE TORPEDOE'S EXPLOSIION'S SHOCK WAVES THEN BROKE THE KEEL OR THE BACK OF THE SHIP.

Excellent discussion of early torpedo development in the US and UK. The focus of the book is on the difficulties encountered in dealing with the intellectual property ownership when government and private industry are working together. Many of those issues can still be found in defense contracting. Just look at the F22 and F35 developments to see modern examples of broken defense procurement systems. From a technology standpoint, the book did a nice job describing the early issues with propulsion, gyros, and angle control. My personal interest is in submarine warfare during WW2. While this book does not cover the WW2 time frame, it does a very good job describing the problems with setting up the industrial infrastructure needed to build state-of-the-art torpedoes. These problems led to the Torpedo Mark 14 debacle during WW2 - torpedoes built that wouldn't explode, exploded before hitting their targets, and ran too deep to hit their targets.

Torpedo is a remarkable look at the military-industrial complex in the US and Great Britain. Well researched and accessibly written, the book provides an outstanding understanding of this complex topic. Highly recommended!

I read a good deal of Discovering the Soul of Service - also by Mr. Berry - in conjunction with a Business Plan I wrote for an Econ class in college. I could have sat and read the entire thing, but didn't have the time ----- so I BOUGHT IT! :)Then I came across THIS title: Management Lessons From Mayo Clinic, a clinic "referenced" in the above-mentioned book. Mayo has been my family's clinic for over 30 years, and I can attest to the accolades bestowed upon this organization! In 30+ years, I have come in contact with only 2-3 employees I found unacceptable in the field of service! I'm thinking that's a near-impossible feat!So I found and bought this one, as well, right here on Amazon - my favorite site from which to make purchases.

Many services, including practice management, share common dynamics with healthcare services in general:- Intangible core benefit; it comes from a performance, and customers incur an expense rather than acquire tangible assets (except for outsourced billing),- High risk service. Under-performance carries severe consequential damages,- Labor- and skill-intensive performance, contributing to considerable variability between service providers,- Physical presence of the customer receiving the service, requiring time and place synchronization with service provider,- Perishable service. When the resources available to deliver the service are unused, the value that they might have created, perishes,- Customer demand for the service is unevenly distributed and sometimes urgent,- Diverse customer needs and preferences, requiring the service provider to maintain a portfolio of skills and resources,- Multiple resources contribute to the customer experience, necessitating coordination of their performances,- Complex service chain with numerous interdependent components,- Service reliability - accuracy and dependability - are essential for success. The key question for any manager is: "if our organization were to disappear overnight, would customers really miss us?" For Mayo Clinic, the answer is yes, and that's why it attracts and retains talented people and inspires their efforts. Mayo offers the court of last resort for many patients. A career at Mayo clinic provides a daily opportunity to apply their core values. The Mayo Clinic model is built on three core values: place the interests of the patient above all other interests, pool talent to create teams of specialists working together, and deliver clinical care with time-condensed efficiency. At Mayo Clinic, the core strategies and core values converge - the strategies are so embedded that they become core values. Its most impressive accomplishment is how well they execute these strategies for more than a century. In organizations that deliver consequential, complex, variable, and personal service, the performance is critically important. The brand comes as the by-product of consistent focus on the service experience of patients. Customers become marketers and the conveyors of information that can help those they know. A labor-intensive service brand can be only as good as the people creating the experience that forms brand meaning. The Mayo Clinic has created its brand through emphasis on operations. They created a world-class service organization we performing well for one customer at a time and relying EXCLUSIVELY on the word of mouth - for nearly a century, they had no marketing department. An astonishing 91 percent of patients praise the clinic to an average of 40 other patients and generates on average five new patients.Mayo Clinic brand heroes are the industrial engineers who design the service processes and the line employees who perform their services one patient at a time. They design their processes by paying a special attention to customer perception, by orchestrating the clues for quality. They understand that customers act as detectives continuously looking for clues in order to form an opinion about their experiences. For example, does a service experience make customer feel safe, confident, efficient, smart, respected. or worthy, or does it have the opposite effects? This book is required reading for anybody who wants to create and manage a service organization with a Mayo Clinic reputation.

I was a patient at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and could not believe how wonderful the hospital is to all of its patients. Read the book and I understand! Great read, and the stories are incredibly heartwarming. I am forever grateful and proud to have been cared for by such a wonderful team. The book is definitive and a model for how a hospital must be operated!

The subject, how to provide top quality health service and survive as a non profit organization for a hundred years is facinating and the book contains a detailed description of the Mayo Clinic, its core values and strategies. I have no practical knowledge when it comes to working for or being admitted to one of the clinics but I miss the story about the pitfalls, what is the biggesr challenges in such a gigantic structure based on a set of core values from the beginning of the last century ?

This book merely deals with health care delivery at Mayo Clinic, one of the best run HSOs worldwide. It examines intricate processes at various practices or product lines and they how are managed. It exposes a culture that is well understood by the employees and how that culture is vivid in the care for every patient. With that said, the material is applicable to any service organization. The concepts can be applied in delivering service to customers. For example, personable and customizable service is a key to retaining customers and scoring high on customer satisfaction surveys. Treating customers differently than competitors is what keeps those customers coming back and become a free advertisement to the organization. The book is well written and easy to understand.

Mayo Clinic is part of the American vernacular, and synonymous with excellence in health care. Did you ever wonder how the organization achieved such remarkable level of awareness inarguable brand associations? In Berry and Seltman's book, you'll learn that it had little to do with promotion, and everything to do with values. Preservation of the values of the Drs. Mayo is baked into the "product" of Mayo Clinic, which, of course, is a service. If you are in the service industry, then you know that product features are defined by the service experience, and the benefits are determined by customer satisfaction. Both are intangibles.Mayo Clinic has applied manufacturing process improvement (Six Sigma, LEAN, et al) to healthcare systems to improve the patient experience. For in the end, Mayo's management understands that the patient outcomes define product quality, and patient satisfaction is the promotion. With all the hoopla today surrounding social media and marketing, an interesting sidebar to this book is the realization that Mayo's brand was built entirely through social networks; patients travel around the world for treatment at the clinic, and return home to tell the tale to friends and family. Quite obviously, the majority of the stories told have been positive. This book helps us to understand why.

Appel's stated goal in writing this book was, rather than to provide a laundry list of compiler algorithms that could potentially be used to implement a compiler, to use the algorithms that now dominate modern compilers. His thorough and authoritative approach starts with building a complete working compiler in the first half of the book before exploring deeper specialized topics in the last half of the book. Each chapter comes with example ML code from the chapter along with programming exercises which build off of the chapter's code so that at the end you have built a working optimizing compiler. The book is an enjoyable read the whole way through. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Instruction Selection, Register Allocation, Functional Languages, Loop Optimizations, and the Memory Hierarchy. This book gave me a new appreciation for how sophisticated a compiler's job is. If you're looking for an introduction or refresher on compilers, start with this book.

I find this a nice textbook for a first compiler class. However, more than the book I find the author's assignments, available on his course website on Princeton, very valuable. The assignments are well thought out, and well written. They help you pace the lectures very well. Search for "Princeton COS 320".

I took Prof. Appel's course in the spring and the book was a great companion for the lectures. It's quite comprehensive and building the compiler is a lot of fun.I also have the the sister-book, Modern Compiler Implementation in C. So if you're choosing between the C, Java and ML versions, I strongly recommend using ML.

The book is very clear, well written and the author guides the reader with simplicity through all the steps required to implement a compiler. The code in ML to implement the most important routines is given with complete explanations. For the other side the writing style is not enlightening, I did not fall in love of this book, but it is an excellent book for learning and understand.

An alright reference book but definitely isn't a good way to learn the material.

This book has a lot of valuable information with regard to the construction of a compiler, that fact is overshadowed by the amazingly poor editing. This is supposedly the "first edition reprint with corrections", but it seems like the vast majority of errors are yet to be corrected.

Terrible. It is very confusing to read and to keep track of all of the code pieces provided and their role in the program. Some of the provided code does not work. Some code could use more comments. Not good for a first experience in Compilers or SML.

This book aims at teaching the reader how to write compilers and interpreters. Compared to other books (most notably the Dragon book - Aho, Sethi & Ullman: Compilers - Principles, Techniques and Tools) the structure and organization of the compiler he teaches are better and more in sync with modern compiler research. So although ML is not a language that is used much in practice it is well choosen for teaching compilers. The first part of the book is intended for undergraduate Computer Science university student and the second part is for graduate students. I have only read the first part and browsed the second part. The first part is founded on the development of a compiler - the Tiger compiler - and that is the main flaw of the book. The Tiger compiler is fairly advanced and it is built up one phase at the time (see the chapter headings in the synopsis). A undergraduate reader who has never read anything about compiler design before will be very confused. The book is good in the way that it presents many good compiler design ideas and I learned some from it, but for me it was not the first book on compiler. I just think that the first part of the book has too steep a learning curve - even if you are proficient with ML, which is an absolute must. Recommended for serious readers who already know something about compiler construction before reading it. For other people I recommend the older but somewhat outdated book: Aho, Sethi & Ullman: Compilers - Principles, Techniques and Tools.

Ali is a kid growing up in Bed-Stuy with his strong Mom, Doris, and his younger sister, Jazz. His dad, a small time hustler sells stolen stuff out of his car (which he is living in), and the brownstone next door has disintegrated into a no-hope building for junkies and prostitutes after the long time owners have sold up and moved South (which happened a lot in Bed-Stuy in the mid 2000s when housing prices boomed, and owners who had gone through the hardest of times (Bed-Stuy = Murder City in the 80s) suddenly had golden tickets and moved away in their old age.) In his terrific Young Adult novel, Jason Reynolds captures the feel of Bed-Stuy, both the energy and the despair, all from the view of young guys whose futures may or may not have been been set in stone already. Ali is part of a loving, if complicated, family, whereas his best friend Noodles who lives next door in the junky house with his checked-out despairing mother and his brother Needles who suffers from Tourettes. Both Noodles and Needles futures look bleak, but Ali and his level headed, warm hearted take on life could perhaps be their saving grace.Following there day to day activities, in a real, non-judgmental way, Reynolds creates a vision of families surviving, and love thriving in the cracks. Ali is mentored by a local boxing coach, a Vietnam vet missing his legs, but is perhaps to kind to really fight, while Noodles is already spiraling into petty crime and an anti-social rut which can only end badly if he can’t turn around. Together with Needles they get invited to an underground party, and their preparation for it and what happens there will change all of their lives. So why are these guys called Ali, Noodles, and Needles? Well, I’m not giving that away, but I do want to give up that there is a whole, unexpected knitting subplot going on, and there is a scene where Noodles and Ali go to a knitting store over in Cobble Hill that had me rolling on the floor. Reynolds is interested in the race and class divisions that form the veins of NYC, and just as Ali is aware he is living in a world within other worlds, Reynolds shows us that, too, and in an entertaining, human way. It’s a wonderful book, and everyone should read it, regardless of age.

Jason Reynolds has written a diverse book all teens will want to read. I found this title on #weneeddiversebooks. This book is urban fiction (my students loved urban fiction!!!), involves a black teen with Tourette Syndrome, the toughness of neighborhood and family but also the closeness of community. Ali is a teen who becomes friends with brothers, Noodles & Needles when thyey move into his neighborhood. They hang out on the steps of their Bed-Stuy block but these 2 brothers lives are so much more gritty than Ali's. Ali has a tough, loving mother who works 2 jobs, an 11 year old sister wise beyond her years, and a father who seems to be absent. Ali has scruples and looks forward to his days with Noodles and Needles even calling them The Three Musketeers. But as time goes on, Ali begins to struggle with the way Noodles treats his brother, Needles. It all explodes one night, causing Ali to question if he can be friends with Noodles ever again. The writing is unflinching but also extols family, friendship, loyalty and honesty. I loved everything about this book and am definitely diving right into Jason Reynolds next book, The Boy in the Black Suit. Highly recommended.

There are so many wonderful things I could say about this book, but I'm afraid this review would turn into a dissertation. So, I'll keep it as short as possible."When I Was the Greatest" is a refreshing look at the life of a precocious kid from Brooklyn, Ali. The story details Ali's perspective on family and friendship. It is a colorful, edgy and insightful coming of age story. As a young adult novel, books like this are extremely necessary not only to minor communities but to our world as a whole. If storytelling is to communicate the complexities of the human experience then every human should have a voice, even young black men.Jason does an excellent job getting into the head of a teenage boy. Ali's wrestling and trying to grasp the depths of loyalty is something we can all relate to. Reading this book will make you laugh, cry and take a closer look into the hearts of our young people.

I bought the book after the author spoke to my class (I'm the teacher). The students were on the edges of their seats the whole time. I was so impressed that I bought 3 copies for my classroom at my own expense just to give my students a chance to read Jason's work. I also bought his other 2 books which look amazing too.

I enjoyed this book. Loved the characters, well written and kept my interest. I will definitely read more of Jason Reynolds's books.

Just opened the book--thank you and just perfect, as usual.

What an incredible voice. Sometimes painful to read, but spot on. Characters are believable, story is ripped from the headlines. Every American should read this book.

Really great book for teens.

Maybe we're all searching for ourselves now; maybe that's why genealogy has become so popular, because we're all trying to figure out what it means to be who we are. Whatever the reason, I've amassed a collection of books relating to the Italian-American experience, and along with Alfred Lubrano's working-class manifesto "Limbo," this is one of the best.Books about Italian-American life seem to fall into one of three categories, none good or helpful:1) Saccharine false memories2) Racist mob/guido garbage3) Self-abnegating junk by Italian-American academics trying to apologize for their heritage to their white tenure committeesThis book manages to avoid all of this and present a candid view of the experience, warts and all, and the kinds of confusion it can bring to be not-quite-white in a country where race, culture, and ethnicity is only allowed to come in a very limited crayon-color palette. There are a lot of books on this topic that should be avoided, and a few that should be thrown out as far as you can throw them. This one, however, is a keeper.

As my son is a fourth generational Italian American who has assimilated into the American mainstream with a much greater and unconscious ease than the generations that came before him, he has the luxury of taking a look at the past without getting beleagured by it. I purchased this book to help him understand how what he calls his difference from other Americans of European descent will help him understand himself and better define his dreams and desires. I grew up on Long Island where many of my peers were also Italian American--certainly the melting pot of Irish, Italian, and Polish middle to upper middle class groupings has little to do with the more mainstream America in which my son matured. My first foray into the canyons of Wall Street quickly altered my sheltered definition of American society. Suddenly, ethnicity was not something you declared as easily as your name in an introduction. On the contrary, your surname, ending with that telltale vowel, relegated you to a second ranking of sorts--nothing that was actually said in so many words, but indeed felt. Not my idea of the American Dream. The title of Maria Laurino's book of essays addresses just this issue. Were you always an Italian? I'd have to say 'yes', but I didn't go out of my way to share my culture with anyone that was not of the fold. I don't think Laurino did either; she speaks knowledgeably of her 'difference', at first speaking of personal differences of food and clothing choices and then citing Harvard sociological studies on the Southern Italian mentality on issues like family, community versus the individual and distrust of outsiders. She corrects the mistake that many Italian Americans make when they visit 'the homeland' for the first time, erroneously thinking that Florence, Milan and Rome are synonymous with Naples, Corsenza and Palermo. Her study of dialect borders on the hilarious---this is strictly an Italian American viewpoint--no other ethnic group is going to get a kick out of hearing the dialect words compared to their Tuscan Italian equivalents and hear the Naples linguist explain their significance. Eventually, Laurino's own quest for an understanding of her own ethnic identity takes her to earthquake-torn Calabria where she embraces cousins she never knew she even had.Laurino's book for the most part is a personal journey of ethnic discovery and acceptance for the Italian American who breeches the gap between the immigrant and full-fledged American. Her particular issues don't always reflect my own, but there is a thread running through each of the individual chapters that resonates some deep chord within me that I thought I'd forgotten.Bottom Line: I enjoyed this book immensely. I recommend it with the same reservation I made to my son: use it as a kickboard to your own voyage of discovery, don't expect it to answer your specific ethnic assimilation quandries---you're better off speaking to an older relative and actually writing down what this elder statesman tells you so that your adult mind can see what your child's mind wanted to forget.

I just love Maria's experience. My ancestors came from Southern Italy, I came out of the Italian ghetto of East Harlem at a time Purto Ricans were migrating into the neighborhood. My parents moved out in my early teens and that is when I started to notice the prejudice of others to Italians at that point my identity of being Italian was firmly established and the barbs of others didn't bother me as much as Maria when she was growing up. I found most interesting the derogatory terms Northern Italians used towards those from the south. Great companion piece to the recent PBS documentary. I too like Maria am troubled when I see the overt racism Italians portray in their neighborhoods.

Good read

I really enjoyed Maria's book. She grew up in the same eraas myself, but she grew up isolated in the 'burbs, while I grewup in a largely italian area. The difference of her experienceas well as her reactions to it were fascinating. Well written, interesting and informative. A good read, and explains a lot about the "mobster mentality" that is erroneously associatedwith Italian americans

This is an excellent book

Male or Female, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation this book is a must read. I think I might be a little older than the author having grown up in the late 40's and in the 50's. I also come from New Jersey (Trenton) and initially raised by my grandmother gravitated between the burbs my parents had moved to and the Italian section known as the burg. I basically grew up in both worlds, the old and the new. I never really thought much about who I was, but an experience I encountered in the 1990's with a section of the Navy rattled that foundation resulting in a search for my Italian heritage. Having read "Were you always an Italian?" has helped in making me understand myself. It has shown me that the choice's made and the direction traveled is not unique. A must read for every Italian-American.

A STORY ABOUT A WOMAN, WHO GREW UP ASHAMED OF BEING ITALIAN ... BECAUSE OF THE WAY SHE AND HER FAMILY WERE TREATED ...IT IS A FUN ACCOUNT OF HER LIFE,AND HOW SHE CHANGED HER MIND ABOUT BEING ITALIAN AND DECIDED IT WAS GREAT TO GROW UP IN HER HOME.

My one year old has only had this book for an hour and has already damaged it. It’s a cute story but it should be put away when not in use. I’m really disappointed that it’s already starting to get torn up from her chewing on it briefly . You would think it would be sturdier since it’s for babies .

I gave this as a gift for a one year old and she LOVED it! More than any other toy or book that she got at her birthday party. She brought it to every guest and had every single one of us read her the book and play with the "finger puppet". Such an interactive and engaging book!

Super cute, fun, and short. Great to keep my 9 month olds attention and get her giggling.

Such a cute little book! I bought it for my friends baby's first birthday and the little one loved to play with the unicorn finger puppet the whole time.

My grand daughters love the little book

Very cute book!

Super cute

So great!

I have read many books on organizing, starting with David Allen to Get Things Done, but had trouble putting it into practice, so on to the next books. This UK author writes in a clear manner and I can follow with no trouble at all.I am more the intuitive type of person rather than left brain logical when it comes to doing tasks. This is the perfect book for my type. Part of my life is logical, but the emotional flitting from one thing to another has undermined my ability to choose what I focus on, and Mark explains what can be done. It is a small book but packed with wisdom and the author has had years to find things that work for someone like myself. He has Youtube videos as well as online presence, blog and I have found all of it extremely useful for time management. Now I want to read his other books.

Mark Forster took a refreshing new approach to time management. He studied why people don't get things done and how that creates stress in their lives. He then offers a systematic way of getting things done that is very practical and actionable. Great stuff!

Loving Forster's two latest books, I wanted to have this one as hard copy as well. (Already have it as digital book)

I originally started subscribing to Mark Forster's electronic newsletter and found it so helpful that I had to get his book! I actually went to Amazon.co.uk last year in order to buy it since it wasn't even available in the US then. Now it's here, so even if you don't buy any other books this year you should get this one! And send it to your friends too!I'm not new to time management strategies, but Mr. Forster's coaching has done what other time management books haven't been able to do for me. As a result of reading this book and applying the information in it to my life, I've been able to work more efficiently both in my job and at home. Now I have more time to play with much less stress about what I haven't gotten done. I also bought the book for my sister and she has increased her income by saying "no" to projects that aren't worth her time. Now she works fewer hours and earns more than she did before!Mr. Forster approaches "time management" in a thoughtful and logical way and doesn't pretend there is only one strategy that will work. He explains why different time management tips don't work or in what specific circumstances they can still be useful. He also provides some strategies that were new to me and have been really helpful, such as working in short bursts of time. I perform well with deadlines, so having a deadline every 20 minutes has helped me get the most out of my work day and get things done at home too. The best part is that he admits to having problems with procrastination and following through, and has provided solutions that he actually uses in his own life and that work....I highly recommend this book to professionals, students, and homemakers to get organized, work smart, and have time left over to do what you want to do.

"The danger is that better time management techniques will lead to bigger and better overwhelm."Since we cannot add more actual time to the day we must be conscious of what activities consume time. Which ones do we most want to get done and which other activities we can say no to. As Mark says it is Life management rather than time management. Other topics he discusses are: What does someone who seems to be on top of everything all the time do differently than those who seem to always be one step behind? What is the need to manage our lives better? Common time management techniques their good and bad points. Overcomming resistances, focusing our attention, and breaking bad habits. There are many more topics and many exercises. This book was an entertaining and motivating look at managing ones life. I am now reading it through for the second time.

...If I were to attempt to sum up the essence of this book in one idea, it would be that one of the most efficient and effective uses of your time is to set up systems to use your time efficiently and effectively. Among the many systems offered in the book, including "Halving", "SWEET", and "Using Resistance to Order your Day", Forster's unique and valuable contribution to the world of time management is his system for dealing with "free-floating" items - the myriad activities from e-mail to prospecting to administration that tend to either dominate or drop through the cracks of our increasingly busy lives.Utilising this one idea, which empowers you to deal with a near infinite variety of tasks in short, manageable "bursts" of time, has allowed me to live at least three lives at once, maintaining an acting career, an active training and coaching schedule, and a wonderful family while still finding time to read, sleep, play with my dog, follow the Boston Red Sox and the LA Lakers, and write a daily coaching tip five days a week!Excellent, unique, valuable, and highly, highly recommended.

Many of the books about managing time seem to be written by systematic organized people who share their techniques, and the assumption is that you too can manage time if you follow their methods.Mark Forster started from the position that he was poor at managing his time. He analyzed what was going on, and recognized that the problem he had was about attention and about poor habits. He also noted that some of the most time-effective people he knew didn't use time management techniques at all. He created a series of training exercises, described in the book, which will help develop more effective habits. The book is personal, and describes the problems he had in learning his new methods in an interesting form. I'd recommend this book for anyone who wants to be more effective in getting things done.

The author does something that so few are willing to do; he tells you about his "flaws" and weaknesses, and that he isn't some "off the charts" genius who has always known what you should do. I like this. It sets such a wonderful tone for the great ideas he so beautifully outlines, creating a state of receptivity that is needed if you are to ever actually implement his insights. Well done!

Ahmed Rashid is a journalist, and a good one at that. He is courageous, and the reader cannot help but marvel that he has not met an "untimely end" due to his criticism of various leaders. From his base in Lahore, Pakistan he has had a vital "South-central Asian" perspective on many of the events that have become of essential importance to the United States, and to a large extent, the Western world, in the "post 9/11 era." His "beat" is Afghanistan, the five central Asian "'stans," India, and his native country. His book Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia, Second Edition, written in 2000, became essential reading for American policy makers a year later.Rashid's book is an essential compliment to Junger's book WAR. Junger covers the combat conducted over a year's period, by one unit of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, in a remote valley near the Pakistani border. To quote Junger: "The men know Pakistan is the root of the entire war, and that is just about the only topic they get political about." Rashid covers in detail the internal political situation in Pakistan, most tellingly, the "double game" that has been played, and continues to be played by the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI), which is Pakistan's intelligence agency. Numerous members of the agency openly support the Taliban, while paying lip service to the Americans that they are fighting them. One of the most astonishing vignettes told by Rashid is dubbed "the Great Escape." It occurred on November 15, 2001, when there was an imposed lull in the fighting at Kunduz, so that Pakistani planes could fly in and evacuate members of the ISI, and untold number of Taliban, to Pakistan, thwarting the efforts of the United States, and the Northern Alliance, in the very early days of the ground combat in Afghanistan post 9-11. Rashid documents again and again how the American leadership turns a blind eye to the ISI's double-dealing, and continues to support General Musharraf's dictatorial rule of Pakistan, and his double-dealing with the reactionary forces of Islamic fundamentalism. But there is much else besides. Rashid knew Hamid Karzai before he become Afghanistan's current leader. He gave a concise account of his background, and the logic behind his selection by the Americans. Karzai is a Pashtun counterweight to the Northern Alliance. His coverage of "the Stans" is incisive. Each ruled by a dictator, who milk the Americans for rights to bases. Graft and corruption are the norm; the ruling elite become fabulously rich, which only helps fuel an Islamic fundamentalist backlash in each of these countries. Telling, Rashid echoes a variation of a once famous question in the American `50's: Who lost Uzbekistan? Rashid also provides vital explanations of what he terms "Al Qaeda bolt-hole," which are their sanctuaries in the Northwest frontier provinces. Is Osama Bin Laden still there? Rashid draws no definitive conclusions, but the continued lack of real interest in bringing him to justice, almost 10 years after 9/11 remains disturbing.Rashid frequent travels to the West provide an opportunity to report on the Western leaders as well. He renders scathing indictments of the American "neo-con" leadership, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al., and how they blew a truly wonderful opportunity in Afghanistan by refusing to engage in even modest "nation building," a term anathema to them, and their almost total focus of Iraq, which created the conditions for the Taliban to become resurgent. Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery? A telling anecdote is on the author's website, easily reached via Google. George Bush, in his book Decision Points lifted Rashid's account (without attribution) of the meeting between Karzai and a Tajik warlord on Dec. 22, 2001But I did have some problems with the book, and found it a bit of a slog to finish. Journalists, to generalize somewhat, seemed inclined to produce "cut and paste" books from their work. The book could use much tighter editing; for example, three times in three pages the reader is told that East Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971. The history of Pakistan, as related in Chapter Two, has a "stream of consciousness" style about it. And there are numerous misspellings, the type that even a reasonable publisher would have caught via "spell-check." Rashid clearly has his opinions on various individuals, for example, "brutal," "corrupt", and renders them, but sometimes without providing the reader with his basis. Another reviewer, Timothy Graczewski, calls the author out on his statements about Toyota Landcrusiers travelling 150 mi/hr in the open desert. Did he mean kilometers? Doesn't matter. Anyone who has travelled in the open desert knows, that, save for perhaps the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, you cannot travel that fast due to the wadis, and innumerable dry water courses that would destroy the suspension on any vehicle.Overall though, a vital, essential book. It was published just before President Obama took office. With the President's increased focus on this area, including augmented troop levels, Rashid's account is more important than ever, and will almost certainly be the most comprehensive view of the area that will be available in the West. 4-stars.

Let me begin by saying that I liked Descent into Chaos by Ahmed Rashid because it provided a useful and readable of the events surrounding Pakistan and Afghanistan leading up to and post 9-11 and the United States war there. However, the book is labeled as a discussion of the failure of nation-building in Central Asia. Most of the chapters revolve around Afghanistan and Pakistan with a brief word tied in occasionally about the other countries. The point that the fates of all of these places is interconnected because they deal with many of the same problems of radical extremism, ruling corruption, and bad economic and educational conditions, but I would've wanted to hear a little bit more about the other countries of the Central Asia regions he discusses. I was also concerned when he referred to Harmid Karzai as his good friend in the first few pages of the book that it was going to be a Karzai love piece...by taking care to criticize Karzai for failings at several points he alleviated those concerns. Overall a good book on the nuts and bolts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, but you'll need another book to dig further into the larger Central Asia region.

Rashid's book is an in depth look at the mistakes made by the US in post-war Afganistan. Mistake # 1 was believing that we could trust or count on the Pakistani government. It spells out in unprecedented detail how Pervez Musharaf, the Pakistani military and the Pakistani Intelligence services took the Bush administration for a ride, by being our "ally" against Al Qaeda and simultaneously supporting the Taliban. Mistake # 2: Rumsfeld's policy of buying the cooperation of Afgan warlords in the search for Al Qaeda, who as we now know had already found their way in to Pakistan. Rashid also puts into context the warlords on the US pay-roll ( Wolfowitz likes to call them "regional leaders") who carved up Afganistan and billions in reconstruction funds. He makes a compelling argument that the war lords and the US policy of buying them off was the chief obstacle to reconstruction and the establishment of government rule in Afganistan. I think the book is overly generous and forgiving of Hamid Karzai (though Rashid makes it clear that he is a friend and admirer of Karzai on the very first page) because it never really addresses the issues surrounding the reasons that the Pashtuns viewed him as untrustworthy. Beyond being a first class journalist, Rashid is an insider's insider in this world and the book provides a level of insight and detail that only he could give.

Ahmed Rashid, is the bravest and most talented writer/journalist I know of when it comes to Central and Southern Asia!!! He had actually been invited by the U.S. Government as an advisor. He has also meant with, and is a good friend of Hamid Karzai. I am reading Descent Into Chaos now, I am half way through; like all the other books Mr. Rashid has written... it's excellent! I would recommend this book to anyone studying international relations/studies; or anyone that wants to know what's going on in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and the other central Asian countries. I will be looking for new books from Mr. Rashid; I hope he keeps on writing for another twenty years! God Bless you Ahmed; you're a teacher, writer, journalist, and expert in International Studies/Relations....
