Just...wow. Damn. This is one of those books that you read and can't quite believe what just happened. The kind that you become so immersed in that you have to shake off the mental cobwebs before you can rejoin reality. All in a good way.As with the previous work of this author's that I've read, the emotions here are intense. Guilt, sadness, disbelief, a grueling and reluctant acceptance of a new reality in the wake of a tragic accident -- and then there's the passion. Goodness. This is a completely clean variation, only one subtle reference to sex even mentioned after ODC is already married, but the passion and subsequent heartache is palpable. Most impressive.The story begins with an almost mystical meeting beneath an ancient yew tree in the rain after Elizabeth has already been poisoned by Wickham's lies and before the Netherfield ball. Our heroine almost allows herself to think that maybe the hero isn't so bad after all, but...nah. Disregarding this instinct is what leads her to pressure Wickham into attending the ball and leading to the aforementioned tragic (yet rather stupid on Wickham's part) incident at the root of this plot. ODC spends the rest of the novel blaming themselves for Wickham's irresponsible mistake even though neither could have foreseen it. Alas, that is the fate of truly good people; the fault that lies with the wicked is appropriated by those who are least responsible. There's even precedent for this characterization in the original P&P when each Elizabeth and Darcy in their turn (not to mention several other equally blameless characters) blame themselves for Wickham and Lydia's selfish elopement at the end. As the consequences of the accident here are more dire, much of the rest of the book is introspective until they face their demons. Since this isn't a very long story (though still novel length), it doesn't become tiring.The changes in the plot (such as Georgianna being the Darcy Lizzy met at Rosings instead of her brother and "the letter" evolving into several epistles about Darcy's pining for Elizabeth rather than a defensive response to a botched proposal) are inspired. I see the nod to the original, yet the execution is very fresh and unusual. Very clever and I was impressed. And the dialogue was superb; both realistic and yet frequently moving. Pacing, also, was expertly crafted; it was exactly as long as it needed to be in order to convey all necessary plot points.
The story has action a plenty. Fights, mountain climbing, rough riding. But at it’s heart, is a story of the minds of people after a major event.SPOILERS FOLLOWat the Netherfield Ball Wickham is successfully leading/forcing Lizzy into a maze to have his way with her. He is doing it with charm and cajoling so effectively Lizzy is not truly aware what is happening. Darcy luckily sees what is happening and starts fighting with Wickham. A gun in W pocket goes off and W is dead.Darcy tells Lizzy to run and concocts a story to shield her from ruin. Quite the unexpected night of events and Lizzy is totally stunned and takes weeks to come to grip with the event.Then the rest of the story happens. This is the point where I lost emotional attachment with the characters, mainly Darcy. It is not an exaggeration to say he is wracked with guilt. This is the Darcy character that seems doomed but almost happy, to take on guilt way beyond what he deserves to take on, we read about in so many variations.It is understood that W was a boyhood friend and a favorite of Darcy’s father. But Darcy cannot see that W is no longer that boy. He has been a gambler, a welcher on debts owed, dallied with young women, and nearly ruined Darcy’s sister. And may very well been about to rape Lizzy. Why was he carrying a cocked, loaded gun in his pocket?I can understand some guilt but it was an accident and occurred trying to save Lizzy. The angst from this point on was so large, so much the point of the rest of the story, I couldn’t identify with this Darcy character so the HEA wasn’t looked forward as much for me.That being said the story was well written, just not my cup of tea. So I can recommend the story for those readers who have more sympathy with Darcy’s angst huge grief.
An accident at Netherfield changes both Elizabeth and Darcy forever, and they must find their way back to themselves and each other. As with all Miss Dash’s variations, the prose and the dialogue both sparkle, even when Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s fears are at their worst. My favorite parts were Elizabeth’s developing friendship with Georgiana, and Mr. Darcy’s trip into the Alps.
I thoroughly enjoyed this unique twist on Jane Austen's classic and the maturing of all the characters. In fact I've enjoyed all of Ms. Dash's books. I highly recommend this one and look forward to more of her writings in future.
Another smash for Gwendolyn Dash! I adored her take on Darcy here and the natural way in which the friendship between Lizzy and Georgie develops is fantastic. This was not a scenario or set up I'd encountered before (not saying it hasn't been done, just that I haven't seen it before), and I appreciated how fresh it felt. Plus hulked out Darcy running around in just his shirt sleeves? YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
This is a well written and compelling story. It is different but intriguing. You get to know Darcy and Elizabeth through wonderful characterizations. My one disappointment would be the lack of attention to Lizzie's intelligence. I was glad not to have to endure much of Miss Bingley, or Lydia, or Mr. Collins.
This book started with some promise, but then fell apart for me. I am not fond of storylines where the main characters are apart for most of the book. This type of storyline then devolves into overly tedious introspection and regrets by our dear couple. The story dragged, especially at the end where their willingness to deny each other went on and on.
This is an interesting take on how the complex relationships between these characters could change and grow. Darcy comes through a crucible a much more dimensional person than in most P&P variations.
