I am Polish. My husband is Jamaican. My daughters were born in the US, where we all live. English language is our way of communication, and since I speak Polish only with my parents, it became a second language to me (although I grew up with it).My daughters watch cartoons in English, we read bedtime stories mostly in English (mainly because they do not understand Polish well), they hear me and my husband speak English, they interact with neighbours and their children in English. There is just not enough motivation for them to even try to speak Polish, and when it is time for me to communicate with them so they understand, English is so much easier. At the same time I do feel bad that I did not put more effort in teaching the kids my language. I also want them to be able to communicate with their grandparents. This is how this book became a part of our library. The girls are 3yo now and find it fun to repeat words. Looking at the pictures makes it more fun for them to learn.I do see a slow progress since I introduced this book to my girls.Recommended it for any bilingual (Polish - English) family.

My daughter is half Vietnamese, and we don't speak it at all in our household, but I still wanted to expose her to some words from her background while also picking up some more vocabulary myself. Turns out this is a great book even if it weren't bilingual. The pictures are large, clear photos with one vegetable per page, so she really likes looking at them compared to some of her other vocab books that cram as many as four different items on a single page.It includes: - artichoke: a-ti-sô - asparagus: măng tây - broccoli: bông cải xanh - cabbage: bắp cải - carrot: cà rốt - cauliflower: bông cải - corn: ngô, bấp (I assume one is north and one is south dialect?) - radish: củ cải trắng (out of place in alphabetical order) - garlic: củ tỏi - green bean: đậu xanh - leek: tỏi tây - mushroom: nấm - onion: củ hành tây - peas: đậu Hà Lan - peppers: ớt - cucumber: dưa leo (should have been in radish's spot, but not swapped because this is in the middle of the P words?) - potato: khoai tây - pumpkin: bi đỏ - spinach: rau bina - tomato: cà chuaI wish it had also included sweet potato and zucchini (perhaps in place of leeks and radishes) because they're far more common in my kid's diet and my overall cooking, but I can hardly fault the book for not matching up with my exact household.Mainly chose this book because it was the cheapest one of the bilingual series at the time and I wanted to check out their quality. Will definitely be grabbing more books in this series.

So unfortunately they lumped the reviews for all languages together. This is for the Farsi-English animals book. I got this for my 8 month old nephew, who's parents are native Farsi speakers, both because there aren't a lot of Farsi language board books available for early reading and also his parents want him to learn English (and they will be learning along with him). The book is ideal for the 6-12 month age range. As a speaker of both languages, I think they did a good job with their animal choices and word choices (no strange sophisticated words, e.g. they stuck to hippo instead of hippopotamus). Overall very pleased!

I got this to help my son learn German, the pictures are nice but the choice of animals seems weird. They have a polar bear instead of just a regular bear, and on the page with a duck and turkey they have a parrot just labeled "bird/vogel" so I have to explain that they're all birds not just the parrot is "bird". Maybe would have been nicer with a header of "bird/vogel" and then a bunch of different birds with their specific english and german names.

The printing is glossy and high quality. The pages are not as thick as the thickest board-books, but seem plenty durable. The illustrations are excellent, with simple details, and vivid, realistic colors. 4-5 items are shown separately on the left hand, and then they are shown in context, in a room, on the right hand side. I really like this approach. To me, this is very developmentally sound for children just learning to talk, and helps them relate the separate objects to similar contexts in their own lives.I love it that a typical "European" kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are depicted. Even the radiator along the wall is present, rather than the more typical American vents. There are other little things that are culturally accurate to europe, which I find very cool. It means that the publisher actually made the book based on things European children would see, rather than just trying to cram vocab onto the same pictures used for 28 other languages. My rating of this book is in contrast to many other books I've come across in the past. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, when I ordered this, but I'm very pleased. Here's why:It seems like sometimes with German language books for kids, the images are old-fashioned, just plain bad/boring, or worse, developmentally inappropriate for very young children. For example, I have seen "My first [fill in the blank] vocabulary" books, with pictures of things that are RIDICULOUS for a child just learning to talk/read... Either the items (or the words for the items) are much too complex, or they are things that are simply extraneous to the life of a toddler. That is not the case with this book.In the interest of full disclosure, I am a German teacher, and I have a lot of frustration with publishers who try to use boring, outdated images in edition after edition, as is the case with the textbook my district uses. The "new" edition, published in 2006, still contains most of the original pictures from the 1970s edition. Not cool, Holt, Rinehart and Winston. This is another reason why this book series is like a breath of fresh air for me.
