I am not a rock hound - I don't know much of anything about rocks, but my husband and I camp a lot and have often found interesting rocks we wished we could identify. THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE BOOK! It has a picture on every page, and explanation of how to test for rock hardness (one of the ways to identifying a rock) and other sections about geologic formations (my favorite part and I am often fascinated by a landscape and wish I knew how it came about.The book is small, sturdy, really a treat to look at. It will go in our camping and hiking gear along with our bird and plant books.Lovely.

Nice format and interesting information on rocks and minerals. I'm new to the world of rocks and minerals so the detailed information about the formations of minerals and where they are found in North America was fascinating to read.

Yes, it's a pocket guide, but it's just too small and thin to cover anything but the smallest fraction of varieties and only those in the most superficial detail. I found it to be of almost no use. The much better option: Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals. Many more photos and detailed descriptions. It's thicker but doesn't take up much more space.

Beautiful examples that are helpful in identifying what we find on hikes in our area and other adventures--will be useful for many trips in years to come.

My son was so excited to receive this book for his 10th birthday. He grew up watching the Wild Kratts and loves trying to identify creatures he spots in nature. He really likes the way this book organizes birds by their most prominent color rather than by name, because when you see a bird you don’t recognize, you can’t look it up by name anyway. It’s nice to have a book that features only birds found in Minnesota - it really narrows it down for my son when he’s trying to identify a species. We like the large, bright photos and the kid-friendly text as well. Now we just need spring to arrive so we can put this book to the test...!

Excellent book - have used as gift for young people in my life. Knowledgeable, impressive author.

Probably most useful in crossword puzzles and trivial pursuit, collective nouns are indeed curious. In an article many years ago in the Harvard Weekly magazine the financial editor, whose name I forget, wrote a piece on collective nouns for whose use I have been an advocate ever since. Though most find it strange and perhaps a bit odd to say the least, it makes the heritage of this rich and expressive language a bit more obvious. It is also fun when such correct usages are encountered in fiction or non-fiction just as a matter of course. It is also fun when playing games. I have for years told graduate students of mine that they could have the rest of the day off if they could tell me what a group of wildebeest was called. I have yet to have any leave early, nor likely to care in the least for that matter.When I retired a group of my students gave me this book.It appears to be quite correct, but not the only one on the subject.BTW my Oxford Dictionary of the English language app on my iPhone includes collective nouns as appendix 12. Is that not curious?

Maybe my fault for not reading the description better, or maybe the seller's fault, but note that this book is really light on real collective And instead has a lot of collective nouns invented by the author. I was hoping for something more like a dictionary, and not expecting a work of nonfiction.

I'm the odd man out here: most of the other reviewers are very enthusiastic about this book. It is quite readable and entertaining, but I have one huge quarrel with it: it is nearly impossible to tell whether the "collective noun" used in a phrase is an actual, proper usage ("A murder of crows") or a fanciful invention ("A click of photographers"). This is a serious problem if you are as devoted to the English language as I am. I want the facts, Mr. Lipton, not made up fantasies, however amusing or even apt. Most of the entries seem to be an invention ("An ingratitude of children") although it is hard to tell, especially as invented terms are tossed in with long-standing, honest ones."Collective nouns" are a peculiar aspect of English, and have an intriguing analogue in Japanese, where even the most common of nouns must have a special term appropriate to them when being counted or numbered, e.g. "Ippun no maguro no hand-roll," a cylinder of tuna hand-roll. English is haphazard about this oddity, but Japanese is deadly serious, and if you cannot use the proper counting-term, your ignorance is immediately displayed for all to hear.

Wonderful, wonderful and yet again, most wonderful. I love language. I mostly love the English language. I love the playful tone that the collective nouns have elicited through many, many generations. I feel a connection to who ever saw a mess of puppies and called the pile a litter. Wonderful book.

I know this is a used book, however, I've order many books described as "good" and have been satisfied. This book was in bad shape - cover torn and beat up. Pages badly discolored - more brown than white. Whoever rated this book needs an eye exam! Very disappointed.

I had been a very happy owner of the 1977 Edition: An is Exaltation of Larks or, The Venereal Game. It was much shorter and carried less text. This the updated, third edition seems a step down. Brevity, in this case being the soul of wit. This edition has more substance. It appears with a more complete history of the collection of collections. There is what reads like a fair effort at providing etymologies for many of the terms. I found the text cluttered and the insistence on using script fonts hard to read.Lists in the first half contained thrown together items with little or no relation to one another. The last half was better organized but there seemed to be little care in selecting the best of offered examples. Some were too obvious and the obscure may or may not rate explanations.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Historically, terms of venery were mostly hunting terms. Pride of Lions, Murder of Crows, Herd of Hinds and etc. The term venery common root as venereal meaning to seek or desire , to lust after or for this book: to hunt. The earliest collection of list of collectives; Lipton gives as appearing in the 1300's in Norman French. He will offer as his inspiration the List of St Albanse written about 150 years later. It is also Lipton's opinion that this book was written by Dame Juliana and therefore the more interesting as coming from a time when few women could write and covering hunting, not a traditional 15th century center of female activity.Once Lipton gets past his history and a few stories about getting to see original copies of some of these books, he has divided the actual text into sections moving from the traditional to the modern. We are not given any complete list for nay of the early editions. Very old and not so old collectives may be found consecutively. While he will make some effort to identify which old source originated which terms, in the modern lists there are a few general statements about who may have offered items under which topic, but nothing in the way of footnotes.For me the consistently best part of this edition are the illustrations. Whimsical, detailed and entertaining, they best exemplify the humor and satiric aptness that is and was always a part of the Terms of Venery.Exaltation of Larks is not meant as a scholarly book, and it is not scholarly. It is meant to be entertaining and it is , mostly , almost. It is also cluttered, poorly organized, documented and rarely as funny as it might have been. The shorter earlier edition was a more entertaining read. This one is not a bad read, just not much of an entertaining read.

I HAVE AN ORIGINAL HARDBACK AND IT IS THE ONE BOOK I WILL NOT LOAN. I BOUGHT MY SISTER HER COPY. GREAT PERUSAL.

Powerhouse Principles is by far the best book out there relating to real estate development (my other favorite is The Peebles Principles: Tales and Tactics from an Entrepreneur's Life of Winning Deals, Succeeding in Business, and Creating a Fortune from Scratch ). He breaks down the book in different stages of development from finding the right property, to tips in development, sales & marketing, financing, etc. I like how Mr. Perez refrains from telling you exactly what kind of investments you should do, he simply explains what worked for him and what we, as the reader, can learn from this. There are no secrets in this business so any book or wanna-be guru that says otherwise is talking out of his rear. However, Perez offers many, many tips that have worked for him and can be easily applied to almost any real estate transaction. One of the best tips he gives is tying up a piece of land/building with a refundable deposit, using the due diligence time to get a project designed by an architect, finding a contractor, etc. and having all parties agree to forgo their fees until the project has been approved by the city and bank, and even allowing them to put their fee in as equity in the project, hence saving yourself lots of cash (more on that in the financing section of the book). This book isn't like some other shoddy wannabe get rich quick type of books (Trump University, Carlton Sheets, etc.). It was written by an established developer chock full of tips and case studies based on his experiences and a must-read for anyone starting out in this business and even already established in the business as well.

This is a phenomenal book and one that I would recommend to anyone who has any type of aspirations in life. Apart from the fact that it was written by a bonafide real estate mogul with real experience -- not someone who made their fortune from writing books or giving advice -- its principles and lessons easily translate to virtually any endeavor. If you're interested in real estate (on a big development scale), obviously the lessons are even more applicable. But even if your aspiration lie outside of real estate, Jorge's attitude, mentality and lessons can be applied to any undertaking you are passionate about.

A great book about real estate investing and development, by a man who never compromised his integrity. A enterprise built on the shoulders of Mr. Perez.

I really liked this book.Never really heard about Jorge Perez but some deals he had made and strategies used are all very clever and really goes to show what hard work, creative thinking and great teamwork can achieve.

Powerhouse Principles: The Billionaire Blueprint for Real Estate Success is an entertaining read for the professional and an instructive read for the beginning real estate investor.For those who do not follow real estate closely, Jorge Perez is the southern half of Related Companies (the northern half is his partner Stephen Ross who developed the highly successful Time Warner Center @ Columbus Circle in NYC and who has just inked a deal with Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York to create 12 million square feet of commercial and residential towers above Manhattan's West Side Railyards).Jorge has been the premier developer of quality condo's in Miami and Miami Beach AND most importantly, is still solvent and doing quite well thank you in spite of the bursting of the real estate bubble. Jorge and Related Companies have a well deserved reputation for upscale excellence that has served him in good stead.How did he do it? Get rich and not go broke like many of his over extended competitors? What was his secret? Well, it is a bit like the secret to losing weight: eat less and exercise more. Jorge is a tireless advocate of financial discipline, hard work and SMART work. He knows his territory, he studies his customers, he knows his product, he knows his banks, he knows his subs...Even tho he well on to his second billion, Jorge still runs scared, still acts and invests as if he could lose it all. In other words, he is aware of his downside on every deal and works hard to keep it minimal. Jorge strives to know not only his job but the job of everyone around him; he advises the reader to continually 'pick the brains' of all their advisors, to find out WHY they give the advice they do, to learn as much as possible from them, in effect make them your tutors.Jorge is evidently committed to being a life long learner and instructs potential investors to "read, read, read, read". Yes, that's right he says it 4 times.While far from an how to manual (Jorge sends his readers elsewhere to get an understanding of IRR), Jorge does give a lot of practical advice, tells a lot of stories that give the reader a good flavor for real estate and make the book flow well.Jorge covers- Five Guiding Principles- Four Keys to Successful Investing- Ten Commandments of Negotiation- Five Rules for Securing Financing- Selling It: From Buzz to Frenzy in Five Steps- Eight Rules for Building Profits- Four Keys for Managing and Growing- Three Principles of ChangeA lot of common sense but would that common sense were common practice. Jorge writes in an easy to read manner, tells stories that make his points easy to remember and covers the same topic from several different angles which i believe is important to drive a point home and make sure the reader remembers and uses the info at critical decision points. To know and not do is to not know! In the interest of full disclosure, i own a condo in one of Jorge's first developments, the Portofino. I almost bought it direct from Related when the building was first built (and i briefly met Jorge at that time), instead i bought in Manhattan. I'm making a career change from the hotel business to real estate development and I am reading every single book I can get my hands on about the subject. I read a hard copy of this book at my local library this past year and liked the business aspect of it so much that I bought my own copy! I recommend this book as well as the books from Donald Trumps Trump University series.For me this book offers good basic knowledge about how he handled certain situations and what he would do.I follow the example of Mr Koch of Koch Industries the biggest privately held company in America. His office if filled with all kinds of books on business. And when he finds a good idea he institutes it in his own business. I also am doing the same. My new Kindle library now numbers 82 books with the addition of this one.

Extremely thoughtful commentary that I encourage any inspiring real estate professional to read. His personal case studies and tips have assisted me in becoming formidable in my own pursuits. I'm all the better for reading and continue to read when I need reminders on deal structuring and execution. Read once and then read at minimum once annually.
