From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Not another heartbreaker about a child in the Holocaust. Yes, but this one has a new contemporary connection. Alternating chapters tell not only of the Jewish Hana Brady's deportation with her older brother, George, from their happy home in Czechoslovakia, first to Terezin, and then to Auschwitz (where Hana died); but also of Fumiko Ishioka, now a director of a newly established Holocaust education center in Tokyo, who acquires Hana's suitcase, pursues Hana's story, and brings it to today's Japanese children. The account, based on a radio documentary Levine did in Canada (a CD of the broadcast is included), is part history, part suspenseful mystery, and always anguished family drama, with an incredible climactic revelation. The facts are inescapable, illustrated with glowing family photos, Nazi official documents that show Hana's fate, and pictures she drew in the secret art classes in Terezin. The one false note is Levine's showing everything before the Nazis as totally idyllic, and all the victims (even in the camps) as always wise and loving. Recommend this with Linda Sue Park's When My Name Was Keoko (2002), about a Korean child under Japanese occupation during World War II. Winner of the 2002 Sydney Taylor Award for Older Readers. This is a children's book, but it is a well done children's book. In March of 2000, a suitcase arrived at a children's Holocaust education center in Tokyo, Japan. There was the name of a young girl painted on it, and from there the mystery progressed. The children in the center wanted answers about the suitcase. Where had it come from? Whose name was on it? This prompted the director of the center, Fumiko Ishioka to set out on a search across Europe, a search for information that was almost 70 years old. I though this was a great book, I never really thought about how to teach Japanese children about the Holocaust. Seeing as they are physically so far removed from Europe would present real challenges. A good book for children to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust, but, in an age appropriate way.

This book was recommended (and was available) at the gift shop in Terezin in the Czech Repulic when I was on a trip. I did not purchase it then. After I returned home, I wished I had purchased it. So I found it on Amazon and quickly downloaded it. True story. I would recommend this book. It is a quick read but very thought provoking.

This was a forced purchased for mandatory summer reading last summer. Both my 10 year old daughter and I enjoyed the book. Instead of reading it in order we read the chapters from the past first and then the chapters from present day...chronological order. That made it easier for her to understand. I would recommend this book to any 4-6 grade child. Tells a good story and teaches life lessons. No wonder it was a mandatory assignment.

Grandaughter loved it. She loves history and is interested in WW2 and the Holocaust.

Hana Brady was 13 when she was sent to Auschwitz. She was immediately put to death, but her story didn't end there. With her she'd carried a suitcase which had followed her from her home to her aunt and uncle's house to a Jewish ghetto in Czechoslavakia and finally on to her final destination. Many years later, Fumiko Ishioka decides to open a Holocaust Museum in Japan in order to teach young people about the horror. One of the items she is sent to display is the suitcase which bears the name of Hana. Her children become adamant that they must know more about this girl, so Ishioka goes to work. She tenaciously goes to the prison camp where Hana lived for 2 years and discovers much more than she'd planned. This is the story of undying human spirit told in a way that children as young as 8, 9, or 10 can understand. Levine does a unique job of presenting the facts in a moving way without becoming mired down in gruesome details. This story will touch your heart and you will be unable to forget the story of Hana and her suitcase.

An intriguing true story. I loved the photos along with the narrative about Hana and her experiences. Fumiko is a special teacher who directed the Japanese children to find answers about Hana's suitcase. I would recommend this book for older children to learn about the lives of Jewish children in the 1930-1940 time period. Even as an older adult, I could not lay the book down until it was done.

I just finished reading this book aloud to my 4th grade class. It prompted thoughtful discussions on prejudice, tolerance, compassion, and peace. I highly recommend it.

What a touching and informative book. My nine year old enjoyed learning about Hana and I was overwhelmed by the story of her life as well. I highly recommend.

#1,640 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Oh wow. Wow wow wow! This book shocked me, shook me and hooked me. The FMC is stronger than you can imagine - or SHE can even imagine. Contrary to my normal book fare, this novel offers a true damsel in distress scenario - but it’s a gut wrenching one that will wreck you, and somehow shows her to be anything but a damsel in distress. Oh, She needs saving, but there is a fierce innocence in her eventual freedom - and a courage that belies the circumstance she literally grew up in.Warning!! This book is incredibly sexually explicit, detailing moments of non-consent, torture, bondage and true rape. Be aware of this BEFORE you pick it up! And know, that despite these inclusions in this tale, the author in no way, shape or form, romanticizes such actions. Instead, they show the monster beneath the mask.Pros:- Exceptionally well written- Edited well- FMC is freaking unbelievable- The phoenixes...- World buildingCons:- Hard to read only due to content.- Cliffhanger!!! Why?! Why?! Lol, *sigh* 🤷‍♀️🥺

First of all everyone should read the warning. This book is dark, has elements of sexual and metal abuse and can be triggering for some. Now that this is out of the way, I loved the first half of the book. I couldn't tell what was going to happen! This is the first book from Loxley Savage and I think she did a great job. Slave 8 can't remember a life before captivity but she still has a spark inside her and wants to break free. She is such an amazing character I fell in love with her in the first few pages. What I didn't like as much in the book were the male POV parts. I couldn't connect with them as strongly and for being warriors they seemes too soft and too unorganized at time. What I really didn't like is a scene aound 60% through the book. I know this is a dark book but that was just too much for me.I still liked the book as a whole, the story has lots of potential and I hope a certain villain truns out to be an anti-hero.This book ends on a cliffhanger

This is the first book from this author and it just blew me away, I loved it so much! It does have a lot of triggering aspects and you've been warned. We also get some parts of the story in other characters povs and it really helps to drive the story. The story, plot, characters, actions and romance, and the writing, in general, are all spectacular and will leave you thirsty and wanting more. I'm so excited for book 2, this author is on my radar for sure!

This is probably going to sound weird but I wanted Trinity to be more damaged. I mean the poor girl has been through hell and the second one of her saviors touch her she’s horney and ready to have sex. It’s not that I want her to be weak but It just wasn’t what I was expecting. I mean, she has been abused by sick men since she was a baby so I just thought she would be a bit more apprehensive towards men and their touch..alsoThe plot were there but were somehow dragged down.. the book also ended in with a huge cliffhanger which I normally don’t mind but this time I just felt unsatisfied reading it.

I received an ARC copy for an honest review. This book is VERY dark, and has elements of captivity and dub-con. So if that kind of content offends or triggers you, do not read this book.I really loved this book. The characters were immediately captivating, and the storyline was gripping and intense. One of the things I loved was that I couldn’t tell what was going to happen. Nothing about this book is predictable or cliched. And while there were quite a few sex scenes, none of them took away from the story. The book did end on a cliffhanger, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I seriously loved the book and now I have to suffer the book hangover. Right now I'm opening a can of whoop-ass for that cliffhanger. Can you feel me kicking your butt? (talking to the author). :D The story is dark and deliciously twisted. It'll make you wonder about your sanity at moments. At other moments faith in the male species is restored. I'm totally hooked, I don't care how long it takes for book two to come out, or if I have to hunt the author down and clean her home so she can write. I just want the next book.

Dark. Erotic. Paranormal. Rh. 3 shifters. Mate bond(very sexual). BDSM. Slaves. Captured. Multi POV. Trigger Warning. Slave Eight was taken from her crib as a babe by a Worlock for his brothel of rare creatures. She has only known the inside of the room she lives in and the darkness behind the blindfold. Hot very hot. If your into humiliation, bondage, and noncon well this may just turn you on. 😘 I very much enjoyed it. Hope you will too. Ends on a cruel cliffhanger. That poor girl.

I was warned ahead of time but Loxley still surprised me and blew it out of the water! I couldn't stop reading it and stayed up a couple nights waaaay too long for "just one more chapter" hahaha. Do not read if you have trigger warnings. This is a dark RH. I cannot wait to read more from this author and will probably read this again after reading some lighter/funnier books haha. I highly recommend this new author ❤️

Excellent map - I have it mounted on foam board and framed. I like being able to find the area on the map that I'm currently studying or reading about.

Very nice map, especially for the price. I am going to attach it to a cork board so we can use it to attach items from our upcoming trip. Right now it is pinned to the wall with out trip outlined with ribbon. Great way to show off where we plan to go.

Exactly what I had hoped for. Includes the Northern Islands which I needed a map in advance of a cruise.

Will be making a trip to Scotland and used this to plan our route. Excellent map. Shows everything we needed!

Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a large, beautiful map!

10 Stars. Luke Dittrich has written a wonderful, heartbreaking story about the life of Patient H.M., real name, Henry G. Molaison. During the time of Walter Freeman and his lobotomobile, there was also a man named Dr. William Scofield. Scofield, was a popular neurosurgeon and lobotomist of the day. Henry, due to his frequent seizures, became Dr. Scofield's patient and was liberally operated on and subsequently suffered horrible amnesia which prevented him from enjoying life, except for one moment at a time. Patient H.M became the most studied research subject in history. With the invention of the lobotomy and subsequent brain study, doctors who previously only had their data from simian experiments could actually use patients from asylums to study the brain. This story is a journey of the brain and those who pioneered in the experiments to find out what part of the brain controls which human function. Naturally, the lobotomists thought that severing those frontal lobes did wonders for their patients-over time this became questionable. In Henry's case, Dr. Scofield went a little deeper into both lobes rendering him a complete amnesiac who could eat two meals having never remembered eating the first. This book pays tribute to Henry as he selflessly gave his time for scientific study. This story is a fascinating study of Henry and those who controlled him, and it is an unveiling of hidden family secrets laid bare by the writing talents of Luke Dittrich. While some of the situations in this book are not for the squeamish, I highly recommend reading this book-this is the most interesting book of the year. I can imagine Mr. Dittrich unearthing the knowledge inside this book over time-it must have been an amazing albeit troubling journey. My own family grew faint at my discussions of lobotomies and the brain as I read this book-I couldn't help but talk about it. My husband said he never wanted to hear the word lobotomy again-but what a story and what a sacrifice it was for Henry. This is an excellent book-highly recommend!

This book was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I cannot praise it enough. Anyone who is interested in bioethics and neuroscience should read this book. It takes a huge amount of bravery from an author to write about something so very close to his own family, and be honest enough to admit his grandfather who performed lobotomies including one on Patient HM (when you are in Neuroscience like I was you never quit hearing about Patient HM). One reviewer said this book was written in anger...I don't think so. If he was angry, it was more about what his grandfather did to his grandmother (they don't know what operation he did on her). And I would agree with Dittrich, that his grandfather's penchant to perform psychiatric surgery was ridiculous. I think one of the best parts of this book was the revelation that his grandmother not only divorced this man, but went on to gain a couple of degrees and work with children the rest of her life. Kudos to her.But I see other emotions about Dittrich's grandfather. Confusion, pride for what Scoville did right, acknowledgement of his foibles, and some love maybe leftover from when Dittrich was a child, and looked up to this man. None of us have absolutely perfect fathers or grandfathers, but we still often have mixed feelings about them when we grow older. What really bothered me was the attitude not just of Scoville towards others, but so many of that generation. I'm boggled at the idea that they were still doing lobotomies in the 1970's, but it didn't surprise me. They were still sterilizing people like me who were disabled (I'm Deaf) in the 1970's. Eugenics was alive and well even then, and what's scary is the powers that be in politics, are working to make eugenics come back. Besides that, all the talk of implants in people for whatever reason, raise all kinds of bioethical flags. This is absolutely required reading if you want to know about HM. I actually think I was less mad about Scoville who gave Henry his condition of memory loss, than I was at the female psychiatrist who destroyed records on what they did to him, and took back his brain from whom they asked to slice his brain into something they could study...because the man obviously had another lesion which Scoville didn't do. All so she could protect her blasted reputation. That isn't science, and if she's still alive, she should be removed from her position, and probably have her license taken away from her. Totally bad behavior on the part of a scientist in the US. We hold our science to a lot higher level...and she broke all the boundaries of decent behavior!

After an okay career in adventure journalism for popular magazines, Luke Dittrich has produced his first book, the story he was born to write. Dittrich comes from an aristocratic American family that had some dark secrets. His grandfather Scoville was an evangelistic exponent and practitioner of prefrontal lobotomies during the 1950s; his grandmother was a remarkably independent woman before she married her dashing, philandering husband. The quiet "Bam Bam," as Luke and his siblings called her, had a breakdown early in her marriage to Scoville; after various forms of shock treatment she was lobotomized, perhaps by Scoville himself.Scoville's biggest case, Dittrich learned, was a lobotomy on the epileptic Henry Moulaison. His drill went too far, and Moulaison, known in brain literature as Patient H.M., lost all his present-tense memory. He was studied by many people, especially by Suzanne Corkle, who coincidentally lived across the street from Dittrich's family when they were children.Yes, Dittrich had a story to tell, but Corkle would not share her notes on Patient H.M. with him; she was writing her own book. Anger, anger, anger. It drives Dittrich's story. This book is a great read.

Difficult to research with the resistance of a major figure in the story. A very good job in spite of it.You can see almost firsthand the incredible arrogance of a doctor who blindly removes vital parts of the brains of fellow human beings and what they are left with. And while he is hoping to cure terrible problems, he almost seems more interested in finding out the function of parts of the brain and where memory is lodged. It is a clever mystery, a medical tretise, a human story. It is also a terrible, frightening story if you think of poor H.M.All very interesting, however.

From those wonderful people who brought you Get What's Yours For Social Security, (see my review) comes the companion volume on Medicare. Social Security handles Medicare registration, which sadly does not simplify the process, and often complicates it as we start those programs at different ages. The bizarre healthcare system, which is the biggest cause of personal bankruptcy in the USA, is not simplified by the act of turning 65 or retiring. The games just change. Hence the screaming need for this book. New games. New hurdles. New penalties. We all need to know what we’re getting into, and precious few of us do. Philip Moeller has plumbed the depths for us, and he’s not happy about all the entanglements he found. Here are some samples:-Medicare Part B has a 20% copay that is never satisfied. Patients with multiple appointments and procedures continually pay 20%. And 20% these days can bankrupt you by itself.-Only 25% purchase Medigap insurance to cover the copays.-COBRA does not delay the need to sign up for Medicare- Health Savings Account contributions must cease six months prior to Medicare enrollment-Although Social Security will send money anywhere in the world, Medicare is only available in the USA-The penalty for late registration of Part D (drugs) is 1% per month you are late – added to all your monthly payments for life.-On the other hand, if you take no drugs, you save nearly $1000 a year in the premiums and deductibles of Part D coverage.-Unlike original Medicare, private Medicare Advantage plans usually end at the state line. They are the same sort of network HMO plans we despise, and that many can’t wait to abandon for Medicare. But they are subsidized by Medicare ($10,000 per person) and so have smaller premiums than Medicare.-Even if they’ve dropped a drug from the formulary, plans are supposed to provide transitional fulfillment, and/or your doctor can apply for a continued supply.-All Part D plans provide free Meds Therapy Management for those with multiple conditions and prescriptions. This can help prevent meds battling each other or causing unintended new conditions.-If a provider tells you in advance you are not covered, you must ask them to file a claim with Medicare anyway. That puts you in the appeals process. If they don’t apply, you have nothing to appeal.-Only 1% of appeals come from beneficiaries. 99% come from providers. There is a separate track for beneficiaries that takes them to the head of the line. The endnotes in Get What’s Yours for Medicare are much more valuable than usual. They include deep links to the specific webpage where the form or information is available, stats that show how many people choose what plans, how much they spend and so on. They are a valuable tool themselves. There isn’t a person in the world who has a complete understanding of Medicare. This book is critical to having an overview of the paths, the pitfalls, and the misconceptions about the program. And fortunately, it is easy and engaging reading.David Wineberg

This is a good guide but must be used in conjunction with the Medicare.gov website to be truly effective. Since there are some many different situations, start here and then explore the website to reduce the clutter that gets in the way of a good decision. The charts are probably the most useful feature, for example, do you know what the difference is between Medigap Schedule F and Schedule G? There is a chart for this.In my situation, I started with this guide and then confirmed my understanding with the Medicare.gov website. You will have to do the same, The medicare website lets you drill down to your specific situation. I recommend cutting and pasting the clauses that apply to you and printing them as one document. For example, you may apply for initial benefits in the three months before...... etc. In this way, you can assemble all the rules that apply to you.The weakest point of the book is that is describes what is possible but doesn't place enough emphasis that by choosing some options you are falling into Special Enrollment Periods and that each SEP has its own enrollment windows. It really comes down to using the Medicare.gov website like a flowchart and drilling down. The .gov website is very well written, sometimes better than this guide.Again, this is worth the money and time to read it if you make the right decision. More information never hurts. Good luck to all!

Makes you understand just how intricate, daunting, and costly the Medicare system really is ... My mother died after a 21 month, $565,000 battle with ovarian cancer, and between her Medicare, and Medigap insurance, we as a family were able to stay financially intact ... After that, no one can say anything bad to me about Medicare, though there is a lot of waste, and fraud that should be checked ... Now at 66, I have it, with Plan G, thanking God that I can afford it, and that I live in America ... If you're a senior learn all you can about Medicare, can all you learn, but don't sit on the can ... SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW WITH OTHER OLDSTERS!

Medicare and retirement are one of the hardest choices in life. Right up there with marriage and job selection. This is a good read and informative however the author does everything he can to keep from making a recommendation. It is understandable that everyone has different situations. I would prefer he guide his readers by explaining the situations where certain choices were the best.

Informative... helpful as Medicare is a mess to navigate... so great info to keep you ahead of the game. (Not in the book, but my advice.. see your doctors within the year you will begin Medicare. Make sure they will take it. And if you haven't had an actual appt. get one before you start Medicare. If you haven't seen a particular doctor within 3 years you are considered a "new" patient. And most of the doctors will not take new Medicare patients!!). Good luck

I liked the book like this on Social Security, but now that I need to get information on Medicare--this just had too many stories for me to wade through. If you like examples, you'd like this book. I wanted more to-the-point guidance and facts. Not that this doesn't have them, it was just too hard for me to find it amongst the verbiage.I haven't found a book I really like on Medicare, but I've gotten more information out of Medicare for Dummies. That and just reading the Medicare website. Let's face it--our government would be hard pressed to find a system that is more convoluted and difficult to understand and work with. "Donut holes!" Really? One thing I keep finding more and more evidence for is that if something's a money maker for Big Pharma--it's covered. If it's a healthier version--it isn't.

Excellent account of the author's experiences flying the F117. There are very few books on this topic from a pilot's perspective... in fact, perhaps this is the only one? I appreciated that no doubt there were things not in the book which may have been 'no-go' areas for its author in order to have it published. His additional comments regarding how the war - excuse me, 'strikes' - were prosecuted were acutely interesting and, most understandably, depressing. It's said that many of the officers who were junior during Viet Nam felt that if they remained in the service and the future brought another conflict, they would by such time likely be in positions of authority and would never allow the ridiculous shenanigans perpetrated by civilian leaders to occur again. This is so and actions such as 'Shock & Awe' but one example. If you're going to fight... fight... don't nibble. Unfortunately, these lessons were forgotten or ignored when it came to Serbia.Highly recommended.

I'm not much of a reader, but this book had my attention the whole time. The author has a very "every-man" writing style that is easy to follow and fun to read. He has a wit and humor that had me chuckling to myself from time to time. He does a tremendous job of recording what it's like to be not only an F-117 pilot, but also a member of the Air Force's flying community. He caught both the excitement of real operations as well as the mundane aspects of exercises and office politics. He also gave me a new perspective on the war with the Serbs that I had not heard before. This was very eye opening and is an excellent read for anyone striving for a top ranking position in the US military.I fully enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone in the Air Force or anyone wanting to join the Air Force.EDIT 1: During some of my military training I actually got to meet one of the guys mentioned in the book: Speedy. He was a civilian and the only reason I bothered to ask if he ever flew F-117s was because he was wearing a "Black Sheep" lanyard. Having the book fresh in my head, I asked him about it. He was very quick to admit to having flown them and having known Lt Col O'Connor, the author of the book.Oh, and he had a lengthy defense about "never missing his target" despite blowing up a cemetery. He claimed he hit his target, but the computer was programmed wrong. We all had a good laugh. Most notably he told us quite a few stories that he said were deemed a bit too saucy for the book.All-in-all, these guys truly are larger than life and meeting one of them only made the book that much more real and enjoyable. Again, I highly recommend this book. It's amazing.

Outstanding read! Brings home the vagaries of peace time combat operations, especially when the brass jumps in and tries to drive the bus. Highly reminiscent of Vietnam and what was done over there by McNamara. O'Conner puts you in the seat with him for the good and the bad, and the ugly! This is one of those books that everyone who wants to be a fighter pilot or a combat pilot should read. It's not a sugarcoated version of the USAF, it's the reality of day to day operations, albeit with the F-117 and all that entailed.Highly recommended!

As a former A-10 pilot, I can attest to the authenticity of the anecdotes that LtCol O'Connor shares. While the F-117 is the aircraft described here, much of the story is applicable to any Air Force fighter aircraft. He captures the mood of squadron life, the issues with maintaining a relatively stable family life while doing a job that many people aspire to and few ever achieve. He also discusses the contributions of those whose duties are essential to the success of the mission, yet are rarely acknowledged. Fighter pilots get the glory, yet those of us honest enough to admit it realize we couldn't do it without the supporting cast. Overall, an excellent read, and highly recommended for fighter pilots as well as those who want to understand the man behind the mystique.

An awesome tale of flight and airmanship. Very much appreciated being able to read what life was like for a F-117 pilot, from attempting to find a decent home to learning to fly solo at the time the world's only stealth aircraft to feeling like I was in the F-117A cockpit about to bomb Serbia. That's the kind of writing I am happy to buy to the point this book should set the standard for future memoirs by military aviators...

It's almost impossible to find a worthwhile book on the F-117 and its mission. This one reads better than a novel. Much technical detail but not too much that it gets boring. This excellent aircraft was retired too soon and this book demonstrates how effective it accomplished its mission. It's too bad the Lockheed Martin Skunkworks can't duplicate the F-117 development with it's overpriced, behind schedule, underperforming turkey called the F-35.

Great story, very well written. O'Connor weaves an intriguing mix of his personal experience with the F-117 in both training and war with some of the military humor that kept them going. An old saying goes : A pilots worst enemies are altitude and runway, altitude above you and runway behind you. With this book, the readers worst enemy is pages already turned. If you like flying and flying stories, you are in for a real treat here.

I love reading and studying about history and especially recent history. The best part about this book is that it was written by an actual pilot that used to fly an F-117 and saw combat action in the plane. This book never had a dull moment and I didn't want the book to end. This is a well written book.

Review

"A great battleship of a book - formidable, majestic...armed with anabundance of revealing information, guided with discerning literaryskill.... Mr. Kluger invites one to admire these moguls of tobacco theway one appreciates, say, Lenin - as brilliant strategists andresourceful technicians ...single-minded in their determination to satisfy [a mass want] and heedless of the human cost of their profit making." A behind-the-scenes history of an industry "whose structure, power, andgrowing vulnerability are so richly illuminated by this monumental andtimely book."-- The New York Times Book Review"[Ashes to Ashes is] monumental...elegantlywritten.... It will probably be the definitive volume of the subject ofcigarettes in the 20th century."-- Time Magazine"Lively, entertaining, awesomely comprehensive.... The quality ofKluger's work astonishes throughout: He actually persuaded many toptobacco executives to talk with him.... Getting the kind of good stuffKluger pulls together is just about miraculous."-- The Washington Post

From the Inside Flap

No book before this one has rendered the story of cigarettes -- mankind's most common self-destructive instrument and its most profitable consumer product -- with such sweep and enlivening detail. Here for the first time, in a story full of the complexities and contradictions of human nature, all the strands of the historical process -- financial, social, psychological, medical, political, and legal -- are woven together in a riveting narrative. The key characters are the top corporate executives, public health investigators, and antismoking activists who have clashed ever more stridently as Americans debate whether smoking should be closely regulated as a major health menace. We see tobacco spread rapidly from its aboriginal sources in the New World 500 years ago, as it becomes increasingly viewed by some as sinful and some as alluring, and by government as a windfall source of tax revenue. With the arrival of the cigarette in the late-nineteenth century, smoking changes from a luxury and occasional pastime to an everyday -- to some, indispensable -- habit, aided markedly by the exuberance of the tobacco huskers. This free-enterprise success saga grows shadowed, from the middle of this century, as science begins to understand the cigarette's toxicity. Ironically the more detailed and persuasive the findings by medical investigators, the more cigarette makers prosper by seeming to modify their product with filters and reduced dosages of tar and nicotine. We see the tobacco manufacturers come under intensifying assault as a rogue industry for knowingly and callously plying their hazardous wares while insisting that the health charges against them (a) remain unproven, and(b) are universally understood, so smokers indulge at their own risk. Among the eye-opening disclosures here: outrageous pseudo-scientific claims made for cigarettes throughout the '30s and '40s, and the story of how the tobacco industry and the National Cancer Institute spent millions to develop a "safer" cigarette that was never brought to market. Dealing with an emotional subject that has generated more heat than light, this book is a dispassionate tour de force that examines the nature of the companies' culpability, the complicity of society as a whole, and the shaky moral ground claimed by smokers who are now demanding recompense

This is the finest work on the critical subject of tobacco that I have ever read, Mr. Kluger's research is incomparable on a subject that so badly needed it. Earlier tracts on the subject were either incomplete or so didactic as to become opaque. The tragedy of tobacco production is that the moral failure was not seen as the crime it clearly was. This book explains authoritatively and in measured tone how the crime played out and is still playing out. The further tragedy of this story is that it has become a blueprint for deadly production in other industries e.g. fossil fuels, pharmaceuticals. This is not a story of designing a product but of designing a deceptive means of selling a deadly product. Delightfully, Mr. Kluger also writes very well, turning a dreary and disgusting history into the dramatic tale of depraved capitalism.

This is a long but generally fascinating book. I was rarely less than interested and to me it was a disappointment to get to the end and have unresolved issues raised (simply because the story was ongoing when written). There is a short afterword to this edition that takes the story from 1996 to 1997. The author spoke to a lot of players in the story and this comes across in the telling. This is a work of journalism as well as history. Mostly fact-based journalism - the author does express views through the story but often covers a variety of points-of-view before arriving at a conclusion. The main story threads are the growth of the tobacco industry, development of an understanding of the health issues and the cigarette industries responses to them, the marketing of product, government responses, the growth, changes in various of the main companies over time - especially the rise of Philip Morris to the major global player (It is this story I found the least interesting - there are a lot of discussion of company politics and paragraph introductions to some fairly insignificant corporate players), and the growth of the anti-tobacco forces. I thought the coverage of a major court case (Cipollone v cigarettes companies) was particularly gripping. My wife read the updated kindle version when it arrived and didn't find many text errors at all. This is the first non-fiction work I have read on the kindle and I missed the ability to use an index, but it is useful to have the bibliography here.Overall I can highly recommend this work but hopefully the kindle version can be corrected to become as fascinating a story as the paper version.

The primary competition for this book's potential readership is Allan Brandt's The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America . I say Brandt's is the better choice mainly because Kluger becomes so bogged down in minutiae that I found myself skipping many paragraphs (e.g., recitations of the accounting jargon associated with tobacco company stock transactions, exhaustive biographies of minor figures, overly technical discussions of the biochemistry and histology of tobacco-borne diseases, etc.) In contrast Brandt's eloquence and pithiness made me not want to miss a single word.

There is no question but that the book was exhaustively researched and tells you everything you might want to know about the tobacco industry over the past 100 years. Often it was compelling reading as well. But it seems to me it could have been a good deal shorter and still have gotten the main points across--say under 450 pages rather than 750 pages. It seems that every fact Kluger ever uncovered went into this book. As a general matter, I also found the book much more interesting when it was talking about the "bad guys" (i.e. the tobacco industry and particularly their advertisers), rather than the efforts of the various anti-tobacco groups to show the harmful effects of smoking. I found those sections comparatively tedious. No question that the book is quite an accomplishment though and I would certainly recommend it although I didn't find it necessary to digest every word

Mr Kluger's tome contains fascinating insight into the nuts and bolts and agendas of entiites involved with 19th and 20th C. E. history of combusted cigarettes, cigars and experimentals. Not all of it can be taken at face value, but it does cover a huge amount of information over the many aspects of this staple of the US economy.

The strongest part of the book follows the business side of tobacco. The author is especially adept (as you would expect from a novelist) at sketching out the players in the history of tobacco. He is also very good on the history of various cigarette brands, their composition, advertising, their ups and downs, sales strategies. This is the best part of the book. A number of wonderfully told stories and incidents pepper the book. The author weaves this information into a steadily growing body of evidence that smoking is harmful, and then pits the industry figures against scientists, and tosses in politicians and anti-smoking groups as the battles go on. The book has one glaring weaknesses, obvious to anyone. The author badly needed an editor to exercise control over his tendency to go off course and to go overboard and tell everything he knows about something. For example, the business diversification of Philip Morris is really tangential to the story, and should have been cut. The author's style is encyclopedic, which is not a problem at first, but it wears the reader down by the halfway point. The author seems very weak in essential areas of chemistry and biology. At one point he even refers to cellulose as "protein-like". He struggles badly with the effect of air and flue drying on the chemistry of tobacco, particularly nicotine. He seems to miss the boat on ammonia technology and the rise of Marlboros. But maybe that information came out too late for him to include it.

The author takes you to the depths of the smoking industry and their relentless effort to increase their profits and disclaim all the health and moral hazards of smoking.
