From Breath and Ruin is Carrie's first YA book but honestly you wont notice, there is a love element and a hint of a love triangle going on in this first book of 4. This story starts off at a slow burn then ramps up to a fast paced book you will find hard to put down.Lyric is an 18 year old who just graduated high school and like most 18 years old she doesn't know what to do with the rest of her life. Lyric is getting pressure from her parents to declare a major or a path of study when she starts college in the fall but she is at a loss. Plagued by nightmares for the majority of her life she dreams of monsters and all things that go bump in the night. Lyric grew up not quite feeling like she fit in with most kids and has the same best friend all her life, she cant help but feel like her whole life is going to change like something is coming for her that she doesn't quite understand.Rhodes has been sent to the Earth Realm to find the Spirit Priestess, a woman who was foretold to save the Maison Realm, his home, with his sister Rosamund, who is a powerful seer. The Maison Realm is a Realm with element wielders, there are 5 elements, Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Spirit. The Realm was torn appart 500 years ago and separated into warring kingdoms. The Maison Realm is dying and unless the Rhodes and Rosamund can find the Spirit Priestess, a woman who can wield all 5 elements, and bring her home the Maison Realm will be no more.Lyric thinks she is loosing her mind, all of this seems way out of what someone would consider sane. Lyric, her best friend Braelynn and Emory her ex-girlfriend and friend, set out with Rhodes to the Maison Realm and that is where her life really changes, everything she thought she knew was upended. From Breath and Ruin is a YA fantasy coming of age story. It starts out really slow but develops the world and characters along the way. I almost put it down as I really didn’t like Lyric but as our group moves along we get to see glimpses of the woman Lyric could become. I will be reading the next installment to see how she evolves. The character I really liked, Braelynn, has already evolved and I can’t wait to see how she handles it. Overall a good beginning.
What a great start to this first book in Carrie Ann Ryan's first young adult novel. It had it all! Deep friendship, romance, adventure, a little terror and a world full of possibility and a promise of the best is yet to come! Great world building and the characters are complex and full of depth, seen and unseen. Vivid descriptions help us navigate this new exciting world that we discover right along side Lyric and her friends, taking every new thing in stride and pushing onward. A few twists and turns and unknowns are throwing our way and the stage is set for the next installment. Highly anticipated by me at least! Loved it! Cannot rave enough about this story and it's possibilities!
The magnificent Carrie Ann Ryan, known for her prowess with OMG moments and exquisite plot turns, applies her incredible prowess now to a brand-new YA world that's going to become my new addiction. What I loved the most was the beautiful way that Ryan built this aching attraction between the protagonists, while masterfully creating an alternate reality borrowing from time-honored hero's journey plotting. It's a wonderful new adventure for Ms. Ryan--and lucky us, the readers who get to join the ride with her!
5 I LOVE IT STARS!! I wasn't sure what to expect, but I loved it!! This story held my attention all the way through. The characters were amazing and I felt like I in the story with them. Carrie Ann Ryan is a very talented author and she shows it with this new series.
OMG I loved this story line between Lyric and Rhoads and how she found out that she might be a Spirt Priest and how she went into the spirit world to find her friend Rhosemand and how she lost some of her friends and she did find her self but needs to be Okay with her life now loving this book and what will be coming next and Carrie is an amazing author
