If you liked Unbroken and War Horse, you will like this book. The writing and research in this book are excellent. I can't imagine how the author found all the details she did about the characters and horses, who are long gone. The facts read like a story and the book is both interesting and extremely moving. However, keep in mind that it is a WWII book and some of the scenes are perfectly horrible. I would not recommend this book for kids or sensitive animal lovers. The descriptions of the horses dying of slaughter, exhaustion, injury, and starvation are gut-wrenching and I wasn't even sure I could continue reading it at some points. The author follows the characters and the horses throughout their lives and at the end, I cried all the way through the last few chapters. That said, the whole tale is amazing and a testament to the horrors of war and the incredible courage and perseverance of these dedicated horse lovers. Have Kleenex nearby!

I'll admit it: I don't know if I'm 5-star rating this because the book is great or because the overall story is fascinating and engaging.But it gets the five anyway. First of all, the story is well-told. Letts relies on the reader's general knowledge of World War 2 without expecting an in-depth understanding.Second, she engages with the various individuals--after all, history is about what groups of individuals do, but we are better able to identify with one or two people.kThird, Letts works non-horse people through some of the horsemanship discussions without being condescending. After all, some of us just know that you put on the saddle and ride--but if you don't know "dressage" from "dressing," this book will guide you through what you need.All in all, this has been read by myself and 2 of my teenagers. We all loved it, for the history, the horses, and the heroism.

If you are remotely interested in history and in particular enjoy reading WWII books this is a winner! Gives a wonderful account of the efforts to save not only the Lipizzaner horses but also a number of other incredible Arabian horses stolen by the Third Reich. In an effort to create the "best German fighting horse" the Lipizzaner's were stolen from Austria and several other locations and taken to a stud farm. This story gives you the detailed account on how the horses were moved and sustained during the war as well as the heroic efforts by the Viennese riding academy director and a caring veterinarian who understood the need to protect these rare and beautiful horses. The book also chronicled to some degree the use of horses in the US Army and how the American soldiers - with Patton's permission - saved these horses from the Russians after Germany surrendered. There were many heroes in this story! I have read many WWII books and up until this book never read anything about the incredible account to save the Lipizzaner horses! My husband and I visited Vienna several years ago and we got to see the Lipizzaner's in their stable and also saw them crossing the street to the training arena. That was a highlight of our visit and I appreciate now how without these efforts we might not have had that great experience. Great Read!

I must admit to disappointment in this well-written and very well-researched work. The source of my disappointment probably lies in the plot summary that attracted me to the book in the first place. That summary describes the book as the story of the rescue of these wonderful animals from the Nazi's in the latter days of WWII, but it is actually so much more than this--for me, far too much more. This book details the history, the bloodlines, and the training of the thoroughbreds. It offers detailed biographies of those involved in the care and training of the horses, those Nazi's who stole them for their own purposes, and of the Americans, Austrians, and Poles who were part of the ultimate rescue. Post-rescue it deals with the individual fate of each of the horses the reader has come to know best and also describes the rest of the lives of all the characters introduced above. And, yes, in between, it does finally deal with the rescue.Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying it is not a good book, just not the book I expected to read. I found it closer to Academic writing--researched, documented, footnoted--rather than to the popular writing the plot description seemed to suggest.

For one thing, this 22nd Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery is not a Questura case. It's a story that evolves from Paola Falier Brunetti's concern and curiosity about the death of the boy from the Brunetti family's dry cleaners whom they'd seen there for years, standing in the back room, folding things and always looking so sad. Most customers knew him as "The boy who didn't speak" and assumed he was a relative of the proprietors, and that he was not only deaf but probably also mute. No one seemed to know his name. At Paola's urging, Brunetti starts looking into what had happened and soon finds that the dead boy/man did have a name and a cold and taciturn mother he lived with. Was his death accidental or intentional? And if intentional, was it suicide or murder? No way to tell.Brunetti also finds that nowhere in the public records is there any evidence this boy/man had ever existed. That conundrum piques the interest of some of Brunetti's Questura colleagues. Just as this story is quite a bit different from what we're used to, so too are the supporting roles. Brunetti's sidekick, Vianello, gets involved for awhile, then drops out of the picture. Everyone's favorite computer hacker, Elettra, has relatively little to do here, as does Patta, who thinks Brunetti's still out investigating a case he's already solved. Meanwhile, we get to spend quite a lot of time getting to know Foa and Pucetti a lot better. Then, about halfway through, comes a nice surprise when Commissaria Claudia Griffoni, the only female detective at the Questura, who was introduced five or six books ago and hasn't been seen since, takes over the sidekick role usually played by Vianello.As for the story itself: Unusual, to say the least, absolutely fascinating, populated with some exceedingly odd characters and told in a somewhat more leisurely style than we're used to. And, in the end, the Bad Egg'll get one whale of a comeuppance. Highly recommended for series fans. In Quietly in Their Sleep, Donna Leon’s intrepid Italian policeman, Commissario Guido Brunetti, receives a visit from one of the nuns who has been caring for his aged mother in a nursing home. He knows her as Suor’ Immacolata (Sister Immaculate) though she has shed her habit and appears panicked. She tells a confused story about a cluster of deaths in the nursing home which she found suspicious. Her efforts to question the circumstances of those deaths had been rebuffed by her Mother Superior and her confessor. Their response was to transfer her summarily to another nursing home where her suspicions were heightened. Even though there is no clear case for a police investigation, Brunetti feels compelled to look into the matter because Suor’ Immacolata had treated his mother with loving care and he perceives her as being unfailingly honest. His ensuing inquiry brings him into face-to-face conflict with religious fanatics, powerful officials in the Catholic Church, and, eventually, with his flagrantly incompetent boss, all of whom try to shut him down.Unaccountably, Donna Leon has lived in Venice for a quarter-century — unaccountably, because she has a pronounced habit of taking on one or another ugly aspect of Italian culture in each of the novels in the Commissario Brunetti series. Quietly in Their Sleep spotlights corruption and misuse of power in the Italian Church. Venal prelates, obsequious nuns, religion-obsessed laypeople, and even Opus Dei, a powerful right-wing Catholic secret society, all make appearances in this novel. Unfortunately, though the story is intriguing, the quality of Leon’s writing here is not at the level of the first five novels in the series. (Quietly in Their Sleep is the sixth.) The tale is simplistic and predictable. But I’m not giving up yet on the series. Maybe the seventh will be better.

The truth is elusive as Commissario Brunetti attempts to uncover the truth, but finds his quest more challenging at eachturn. While following Brunetti's trail, we learn a great deal about several major characters.Each book in this outstanding series deals with different but major aspects of Italian life - finance, immigration,toxic waste, fishing rights, glass-making,tourism, medicine,private education , plastic surgery, horoscopes and through it all, the role the Catholic Churchplays in each life. I read a great deal, and Ms Leonis at the top of my list. Her writing is simply brilliant, and I await each new book with eager anticipation .Start at the beginning and watch each major character grow in depth. Highly recommended!

After reading over a dozen of Donna Leon's novels it's difficult to say which one I loved the best but this one is centered around the Catholic Church and it brought back memories of my childhood in Catholic Quebec so it was difficult to put down...but then almost all her novels are like that...so fun and exciting to read...she is now in my top ten or so favorite authors and that's saying something for me...I read one or two books a week and because I read on Kindle I'm able to stock up on good books; so when I finish one I can go quickly to another favorite...much better than the olden days when finishing a book was dreadful and had to go to bookstores and look for something else to read next...I love that on Amazon I'm abler to review tons of books giving me a description of the contents and a list of comments from previous readers,,,Hey, and Kindle prices for best sellers and great authors is so much less expensive than in the past when I had to pay upwards of $25 per book...Kindles are less than half the price of paper books. and Hey, back to this book, I loved it!

Francis Bacon, philosopher, essayist, lawyer and statesman, was born in London in 1561. He studied at Cambridge and was enrolled at Gray’s Inn in 1576. Following his release, he retired to the family home at Gorhambury, Hertfordshire, and his remaining years were spent in literary and philosophical work. It was Bacon’s ambition to create a new system of philosophy to replace that of Aristotle, and he has been justly acclaimed as an inspiration to later scientists, rationalists and materialists. Of his philosophical works, the principal and best known are The Advancement of Learning, Novum Organum and De Augmentis. He also wrote several professional works including Maxims of the Law and Reading on the Statue of Uses. Some books are to be tasted,” reads a famous passage, “others to be swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested”; all these groups forming, no doubt, an infinitesimal portion of theoceans and cataracts of ink in which the world is daily bathed and poisoned and drowned. Surely the Essays must be numbered among the few books that deserve to be chewed and digested. Rarely shall you find so much meat, so admirably dressed and flavored, in so small a dish. Bacon abhors padding, and disdains to waste a word; he offers us infinite riches in a little phrase; each of these essays gives in a page or two the distilled subtlety of a master mind on a major issue of life.

There is not much here to say that the other reviewers have not covered: Sir Francis was a truly sharp witted mind, and knew how to write good prose, and how to run his topics and resolutions home to the reader. As style goes, I personally go easily between Aristotle and Bacon in the same day, and often. To me I see much of Aristotle in Francis' works (as in his high-formal writing style), yet it seems he did not know Greek. Most of his quotations and analogies he draws from Latin writers (a large proportion seems to be Virgil and Tacitus; midst a handful of others strewn throughout).As far as Sir Francis' writing goes, theres little bad to say, and a lot of good. This is worth reading for any philosopher, or even anyone trying to get a good hold of formal prose. He might to some seem a tad difficult to read at first, but it shouldn't prove a real obstacle for anyone actually interested in the reading -- after you read just a couple of his essays, you will likely start to get used to his style quickly. I suggest looking in the Contents and just picking out a few that look like topics you couldn't deny interest - that will get you hooked, and into the style.As for the editor John Pitcher, there are many good things, but a certain terribly annoying quality that weighs as heavy as all the good in my opinion.For those who do not know Latin extensively (i.e., limited vocabulary and grammar, or none at all) the annotations are of course great and indispensable. Pitcher also generously untangles Francis' allusions and such, which are helpful also at times.But something that he (Pitcher) follows in other editors of Bacon's works, is complete asinine glossing of words in context which makes complete sense. And he does this extensively. Oftentimes in a work that actually does have an archaic vocabulary, the first glossing of the word is taken to carry its meaning through the essay, but though "estate" is used 10 times in the 2-3 page essay Pitcher will put a note at each occurrence and gloss "state" (not to mention in its context the glossing of that word is obvious and unnecessary). The amount of 'archaic' vocabulary is small and simple throughout the book; a half-page glossary could've been supplied instead of bogging the pages down with redundant annotations of obvious words and thus hurting the actually important annotations.But all that said, this is still a great edition, a great book, great author, and even by the above facts this is probably the best publication of Francis' essays. The annoying glossing isn't too bad after you get used to it.

Francis bacon doesn't waste a single word. He writes profoundly on topics and only in a few pages each. Great for when you want a thought provoking read but are pressed for time

I first encountered Francis Bacon's "Essays" many, many years ago during college. My copy was a college library edition, so it did not remain a part of my permanent collection. However, some 25+ years later, I purchased the Penguin Classics edition to reread and reminisce about my school days, and I was not disappointed. Personally I found his essays fascinating, eloquent, philosophical, and brilliant. If I were in the same line of work I was in 15 years ago, I would study and memorize some of his quotes and use them in arguments with my colleagues and especially against my enemies.

So why did I give this book all five stars?First, the information is presented in an easy-t-understand, highly readable manner. Not only are there plenty of pictures, but author Gundi Gabrielle has chosen to insert arrows to point out the highlights. Ms. Gabrielle goes on to explain potentially necessary apps, and why budding website owners may want to add them.There are literally TONS of links in the ebook, most of which lead you to information about buying another product BUT the whole idea is learning about starting a successful blog. Unless you're just doing it so you can say you have one, most people either want the personal notoriety or to put a few bucks in their pockets. The bottom line is that it will be extremely difficult, if not possible, to accomplish this without many of the tools the author has suggested. Think of this book as a guide, or a shortcut to doing things the right way.Very helpful is the "Resources" section in the back, where Ms. Gabrielle has collected all the different companies and tools in one convenient spot. Training for WordPress as well as plain old beginner training for new bloggers is also featured.Bottom Line -- This book lives up to its title in more ways than one. If you are looking to start a blog and want to do it quickly and correctly, you can't do better than starting with Gundi Gabrielle's book. Five stars.

It was so nice to know what plugins to get, how to get set up for everything such as hosting with InMotion and building my lead generation pages with Thrive Architect. The added bonus linked video tutorials were fantastic! The author really taught me a ton in these valuable pages. Just the Thrive Architect tip from the author alone has saved me hundreds of dollars that I would’ve spent for the same thing! I cannot express enough appreciation for this amazing author that has mentored me through this process especially since IT scares me! Thank you Gundi Gabrielle! Your books have added so much value in my life! I STRONGLY recommend checking out ALL of her books! Just got this book yesterday and finished it today!! This was a quick, no nonsense, book! Just the way I like it! I have an existing blog using wordpress and I wish I had this book while setting everything up! This book literally teaches you all of the basics that you really need to know to get started! She did all of the legwork you need to know and just has a way of explaining it in its simplest form. She also gives many great suggestions on how to grow your blog once you are up and running! And the thing that impressed me the most was that she emailed me back and answered any further questions that I had!!! So happy with this book!

Cash Lambert is the former editor of Hawaii's Freesurf Magazine. He has written for ESPN Outdoors, the Outdoor Channel, Autism Parenting Magazine, Surfing Magazine, Eastern Surf Magazine and Surfline. A graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University, he served as a volunteer surf instructor with Surfers for Autism for 4 years.
