Thoroughly enjoyed the content. Von Franz clearly has a deep understanding of alchemical and imaginative principles; she weaves a complex story of how these dance in our heads and lives. Also clearly it is translated from the original German and, while fateful to the text, I'm afraid much is lost in translation. That said, if this is of interest to you, there are few authors who can deliver on the promise implicit in the title. Recommend.

This is a great book, one of those books where each paragraph is loaded with details, and you find yourself thinking about it long after you've finished. It was dense in a good way. This material is from lectures which have been transcribed, and it shows because it seems like she knew her stuff and knew how to deliver it, as if she had learned from repeated experiences.

This was the first serious modern work on alchemy that I've read, and boy did I luck out! It is a work charged with authenticity and vision. von Franz gives you some historical background on the origins of alchemy, then introduces this 16th century alchemist, Gerhard Dorn, and his inner and outer struggle to illuminate and heal the schism between spiritual alchemy and Western Christianity. Dorn doesn't come to any happy conclusions, but the chapter on Medieval Magic is worth the entire read. It includes a serious attempt to examine the question of evil (oh thank you!)and the historical process of projecting the contents of the psyche onto some aspect of the body. Also an inspiring section on the "cloud" as symbol in alchemy and christian mysticism for the confusing and darkening part of a person's journey inward to her own core. Also, peppered throughout are juicy tidbits about things like necromancy, pyromancy, hydromancy and something Jung himself was into for a while called Geomancy--which she explains in a brief but fascinating aside. The book is developed from transcripts of a 1969 lecture she gave in Zurich at the Jung Institute. It reads like a lecture, with the rythmns and addendums of the spoken word mostly intact, but obviously translated. That's ok--it flows like pure gold and is a great window into this whole Zurich scene and the living body of work that von Franz and Jung together embodied. This little work is bound to inspire and fuel some aspect of your own imagination. Enjoy!

Derived from Jan/Feb 1969 lectures @ C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, this commentary on Gerhard Dorn's 17th c. work complements Jung's "Mysterium Coniunctionis" & "Psychology & Alchemy." It's an advanced book--prior background in Jungian psychology & alchemy are helpful, but p. 21: "One book opens another. Read many books & compare them throughout & then you get the meaning," & this work helps one understand Jung's lengthier/more difficult works. Indeed, despite the erudite material, von Franz clarifies the meaning in her awesome commentary. Per her title, pp. 22-3: "Jung sometimes defined the introverted psychological tradition in alchemy as the art of active imagination with material." Further, p. 147: "Dorn floated over the abysses of the mysteries that Jung was to penetrate." [later]Much of Dorn's work is a symbolic, alchemical journey similar to the Kabbalistic Hekalot, the Divine Comedy, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, or especially Ashcroft-Nowicki's "The Shining Path." His travelers (spiritus, anima & body) resemble the Neshamah, Ruach, & Nefesh in Kabbalah. Dorn reveals brilliant insights into psychology but fails in his attempt to reconcile Christian dogma with alchemy. pp. 12-13: "The ultimate dynamic impulse to become a physicist is based upon the desire to find out more about how God works...The really great & creative scientists have the same motivation as the alchemists: to find out more about that spiritual or divine substance...which lies behind all existence."But, von Franz's also provides enlightening/profound/pithy asides on: dreams, flow ("a constant awareness of the Self"), evil & the shadow, animal & human rituals/games, the Unconscious creating conflict to achieve progress (implying the spiral development model), the psychological basis for divination techniques, & the relationship between individuation & synchronicity. pp. 148-9: "While we normally live in a dual world of `outer' & `inner' events, in a synchronistic event this duality no longer exists; outer events behave as if they were a part of our psyche, so that everything is contained in the same wholeness...To reach that point where outer & inner reality become one is the goal of individuation. Through it one also reaches some of what Jung calls the `absolute knowledge' in the unconscious...At the end point of development (the end stage of the individuation process) the Zen masters are in such a state of harmony with the collective unconscious that they communicate with one another subliminally, they are together in the unus mundus". [Self] This is a brilliant work, my favorite of the 5 I've read.

The Symposium is what it is: a classic of western culture. So, when one offers a review, it's not about the text itself (I think) but for the translation, presentation and notes. So: Wakefield's translation is the smoothest I've read of this great text. His modern English makes the homoerotic context of the dialogue clear, for one thing. I've taught this text to sleepy undergrads who were clueless about the terms "lover" and "beloved" in the speeches, assuming they were about a boy and a girl. But the notes are where Wakefield really shines. Wakefield gives not only a readable account of each of the speeches, a special discussion of love in Greek thought, and a literary analysis, but also a useful set of notes at the end. Over all, this is so much better than the tired British translations we used to read in college back in the old days.

In this review I will compare 5 translations of Plato's Symposium:1. Alexander Nehamas & Paul Woodruff (Hackett Pub Co, 1989).2. Benardete (University of Chicago Press, 2001).3. R.E. Allen (Yale University Press, 1993).4. Shelley's Translation (St Augustine Press, 2002)5. Sharon (Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co, 1997)I have given all translations 5 stars for their own unique perspectives. Each of these editions has its own strengths and weaknesses, and because of this, none of this edition is complete in itself. Inevitably, if you are serious in undertaking this work, you need to pick up more than one edition. I will give a recommendation on which one to use, at the end of this review.Symposium consists of a series of speeches on love (Eros), culminating in Socrates' and then Alcibiades'. What I am looking for is, first, ease of understanding the central concept of the book, this is obtained through different types of translations. My bias is toward a translation that is fluid, natural, and conveys the concept in a straight forward way. Second, I am also looking for helpful insights and philosophical explanations of some key thoughts. You get this from the quality of commentary/notes as part of the book.Both Sharon's and Nehamas' editions are similar in their lucid, straightforward, and current translations. I find that these 2 editions to be the best and easiest in understanding the text. On the translation side, I give these 5 stars. However, the commentaries in both editions are basic, and unsatisfying in my mind. For this, I give 4 stars.Benardete's edition has a superb commentaries both written by him and another (which is the gem here) written by Allan Bloom. You may or may not like Bloom's style, but he does give you a lot of background especially in ancient Greek pederasty culture, and valuable insights in each of the speeches. I give this a 5 star. I will recommend buying this book just for those 2 commentaries. On the translation itself, however, I am not a fan of Benardete's style. I have commented this in other reviews for his other translations, especially the "Sophist". For some reason, I find it more complex, long winded, and harder to understand. For this I give this edition translation 4 stars only.Allen's edition is superb for both translation and commentaries; this is a 5 star book for me.Finally, on Shelley's translation: this is a unique edition for a couple of reasons. It is a translation of a masterpiece work, by a master in literature himself, Percy Shelley. So, you are reading not only Plato's works, but also a work by one of the most influential literary figure in the English world. Secondly, there is an extensive commentary by David O'Connor, not only on the Symposium, but also on Shelley's process and motivation of doing the translation. A superb edition.My final recommendation: pick up either Sharon or Nehamas' book (personally I prefer Sharon's, it is beautifully done) for the translation, and then pick up Stanley Rosen's "Plato's Symposium" for the commentary (I have a separate review for this superb book). However, if you must read 1 and only 1 book, I would stay with Allen's.

Hackett Publishing puts out the preeminent translations/versions of the classics. The introductions, footnotes and line references allow for thorough reading/engrossment of the texts. I have a large collection of Hackett books and I was not disappointed by this one. Whether you are taking a class or reading on your own turn to these texts over other versions. You will NOT be disappointed. I recommend this book (version) without reservation.

The one start is for this particular edition not for the book itself. The edition does not have numbered paragraphs. I need this book for a class, and we need paragraph numbers to properly cite the text in essays. It was a complete waste of time for me to read this edition and make notes in it, and then have to look at another edition to get the paragraph numbers for citation purposes. When my professor referred to certain passages of the text in class, I could not follow along. My professor says that this usually happens when students get their books from Amazon instead of the editions she picked out that are on shelf of the campus bookstore! Regrettable mistake on my part.

With this I read the Hackett edition and I was pleased with it. Unlike many of their other Plato editions, this one had a decent amount of footnotes and a great introduction, with an easy to read translation.I knew beforehand that this book contained dialogues about Euros, but I didn't realize that with many of the dialogues the love is referring to pederasty, I should have guessed from some of the interactions with other Plato dialogues. To someone like myself from a different time and culture this was slightly disturbing at first, but once I got past my own opinions, this was actually a great dialogue. I did wonder how this dialogue was so well copied throughout the Catholic middle ages, one would think that it would get swept under the rug like so many other documents, but perhaps because its Socrates or just because its good, it got a pass. I think its among the best of the Plato dialogues I've read, it seems more lively and entertaining than some of the others.In this, men at a symposium sit around making speeches in praise of love. I don't remember the first ones very well, but the later ones were pretty good. I liked the popular one by Aristophanes where he tells of a love creation type of myth were people at one time had double the body parts but were separated into two by a god, then they search for their other half. I think my favorite part though happened at the end where Alcibiades comes in drunk and tells stories about Socrates, it gives another dimension to the man and made me appreciate him more (his apology was even more effective when I read it after this).

I'm both a business owner of a manufacturing company and a consultant.... I wish I had read this years ago. It would have saved me a ton of grief trying to direct our sales managers. I am confident we would have made much larger profits utilizing Rosen's strategies. Any CEO who doesn't read this is missing critical information about what to expect from a sales manager and/or what to look for when hiring a new one.OK, the beginning of the book may give you an idea that this is a self-promotion but those of you that couldn't get past that are missing out on great content. The book is invaluable for anyone playing a role in a sales organization. Rosen offers sales coaches a fresh, clear, no-nonsense strategy for successful coaching. If I were Rosen, I'd give the book away for free and instead take a percentage of sales increases that will undoubtedly come from his advice. If only.

Keith does a great job of creating systems and methods for coaching your T.E.A.M. - He does a great job separating coaching from accountability. There are some great resources in this book if you order it in print form. I ordered it in audio but the folks at Keith's office were helpful in getting me a hard copy of a couple of forms.

Recommended to me by my Director. The book is a good read and if you have been in sales for any length of time, you will recognize all of the different sales managers in the book. It will make you think about your style and how to find your strengths and help your folks to develop into the champions that you see in them in the interview process. If you don't find something useful in this book, maybe you are in the wrong profession. It is also a guide for manager that want to develop their directors and VP into better sales people. If you sell for a living, either as a sales professional, Sales Manager, Director, or VP, this book should be on your bookshelf. You will find yourself going back to it again and again.

Best book ever on sales coaching! I have purchased this book at least 20 times because I love it so much I gift it away to people who seek me out about my best practices. It changed my life personally and professionally, I have not had turnover and our sales keep increasing since I invested in this book and began executing coaching the way Keith talks about in the book. Read a review above that the book gives you no structure, NOT true, it is all structure but maybe that reader missed the part that the structure comes from the inside first. I also enjoy listening to it in my car, it is available on audible and ITunes. BEST SALES COAHING BOOK EVER!

I highly recommend this brilliant and honest book. I have been involved in diversity and inclusion efforts for about 20 years, attended innumerable seminars, read a host of works, but as soon as I read the Preface of Down Girl, I knew that it has important new insights into misogyny. The ensuing Chapters present a remarkable combination of diligent research and exceptional clear thinking. No spoilers, but I will tell you that Down Girl offered many fresh takes on behavior that I've read and thought about for years, and time after time I found myself thinking, now why didn't I see that before?I also was very impressed with the precision and accuracy of this voice. Professor Manne carefully presented not only the contours but also the limits of her analysis. Her writing shows a tremendous respect for the reader.

This is an illuminating, thoughtful, thoroughly-researched and carefully-argued book. If you've ever wondered why "misogyny" and "sexism" seem to be sort of the same thing, but also maybe different, you should read this book. If you've ever felt like someone was using gender-dynamics or aggression to 'punish' you or 'put you in your place,' but you can't put your finger on exactly how or why or what was going on, you should read this book. If you've ever wondered why strangers on the street will often follow up a "hey beautiful" with a 180 degree turn to "Why are you such a *****?!" you should read this book. If you've ever wanted to better understand the ways in which women, their bodies, and their lives are policed, challenged, pushed around, and held to seemingly double-standards, you should read this book.And if you've ever wondered why the actions of a woman have infuriated you, annoyed you, shocked you, or just seemed wrong, deceitful, cold, or out of place, but you can't put your finger on exactly why...you should read this book.

Donald Trump broke into national consciousness during the GOP primaries by making outrageous comments. In August, 2015, he attacked the began the first GOP presidential debate with horrible comments about one of the moderators of the first debates, Megyn Kelly. Toward the end of the campaign, a tape of him bragging about sexually assaulting women was released. Yet he won and has now served as president for a year.Kate Manne’s book Down Girl, is perfectly timed (despite having been in the works for many years—she swears Trump’s election is not just a marketing ploy to sell more books). Down Girl examines the concept of misogyny—deconstructing some of the common definitions, proposing one of her own, and examining the application of her definition in a variety of contexts, including (among many others) examining the tv show Fargo, Rush Limbaugh’s attack on the Georgetown Law Student who dared to make the case that contraceptives should be covered by health insurance, two high profile crimes, and concluding with an analysis of the role misogyny played in the recent presidential election.Kate Manne is a professor of philosophy at Cornell, but you should not let that scare you away. While this is real philosophy, it is (almost) jargon free, and highly readable, even for those with zero background in philosophy (full disclosure: my undergrad major was Ethics and Political Philosophy 40 years ago, but am in no sense a philosopher).To risk over-simplifying Prof. Manne’s thesis, she defines misogyny as a system of customs and actions designed to signal to women that they should “stay in their lane” and not compete for what have traditionally been coded as jobs (which I am using loosely to include all social roles) reserved for men. She rejects the view that misogyny is defined by the motives of the men in question, and instead suggests that the key is examining the impact of the actions and social structures on women—do they have the effect of signaling to women that they are out of line? Do they impose a cost on women not borne by men in similar situations? If so, they are examples of misogyny, regardless of the intent of the actor. Viewed this way, people who perform acts furthering misogyny can love their wives, mothers and girlfriends, without contradiction). Note that this allows women to engage in actions which constitute misogyny as well.It is important to note the limitations of Prof. Manne’s book. Early on, she explicitly states that she is not qualified to address—and will not examine in any detail—the very important issues of the intersection of race and misogyny, or the special case of how misogyny intersects with the struggle by transwomen for equal rights. That said, in the final chapter, she does discuss race, and its interplay with misogyny, in the context of examining Trump’s victory over Clinton.But it is the earlier chapters of the book which I found to be the most thought provoking. Prof. Manne rejects the idea that misogyny depends on pretending that women are somehow less human than men—rather, they are viewed as serious competitors for male coded jobs who—precisely because of their full humanity—must be slapped down. I am not sure that I agree. Using John Rawls’ framework of the “veil of ignorance,” you must consider the possibility that you would fill any of the “fully human” slots once the “veil” is removed, and are thus motivated to develop moral rules which would benefit you, regardless of your future position in society. However, you need not consider the impact of your proposed moral rules on those who are viewed as less than “fully human,” as you can be assured that you will not fill one of those slots. It is in this sense, that the ethical rules applicable to non-human animals are generally considered less compelling than those applicable to humans. Applying this formula to misogyny, if you adopt a moral rule which allows misogyny to exist, then you presumably don’t believe that you will be assigned a role as a woman—otherwise, why would you purposely inflict handicaps on yourself? In this sense, I think that racism and misogyny both depend on some level on the assumption by those in power that women (and non-white people) are not fully human.To be clear, my argument against Manne on this point in no way detracts from my admiration of Professor Manne’s book—it adds to it. I love books that engages me in this sort of thought process. It is why I chose an undergraduate major in philosophy, and it is an exercise I (and I suspect many people) engage in only rarely after we leave college. Reading Down Girl was for me an excellent way to regain that habit.

I heard Kate Manne speak on the Brian Lehrer show on WNYC one evening. I found her points to be compelling, and her interaction with one particular listener to be meaningful and precise. So, I leaped to my kindle and bought this.I haven't finished the book yet, but I was sharing this book on social media, and I saw it hadn't received a review yet. I wanted to say something positive for the book so that more people would buy it and review it.The book has the precision of academic writing, but the accessibility of a news magazine like the New Yorker or the Economist (although it falls more on the academic side of things). It discusses the importance of properly defining misogyny, and thinking about patriarchal structures in a way I haven't heard before. Manne is very careful and precise, and her points are really helping me understand myself and how I can benefit people (I am a white straight male).I haven't finished the book, and I'm enjoying it and benefiting from it. I wish I were more expressive so I could encourage you to read it. I'd say read what you can and go search for that interview if you want to know more before you buy.

I liked it. I really, really did. I want to say that first. Tamar was a complex character and I honestly enjoyed her. I don't regret buying the book and will read more from this author. Stephen took a little bit more to grow on me but I liked him in the end.But, my problem was with the secondary characters specifically Kim and her father. Rape culture infantilizes men in a way that is unfair and damaging to women. It reduces the feelings of victims to nothing and I felt that both Kim and Tamar's father did that to her under the guise of Christianity.There was nothing Christian about Stephen's lies and abandonment but so many of the critiques from Tamar's loved ones were about how "bitter" SHE was being. Rape culture. Men can go to jail now for releasing nudes for a reason. It's a violation. It might not BE rape but it's close. And for Tamar's supposed friend to downplay how Tamar was violated and her life forever changed with "that's old" and her father to just say "it was a prank" is insulting not just to Tamar but any potential survivors who read that. Her supposed friend, knowing what Stephen might have done waxed way too poetic and way too soon about how hot Stephen was, ignoring much of the real damage that happened to Tamar.Tamar had two men who were supposed to be her safe spaces prove themselves to be the opposite, but she needed to "let go of the bitterness." Her father was wishing when he could have repented and reached out to her first. He was wrong. No matter if she had sex before marriage, she was violated and his first thought should have been protecting her. She had a right to be upset and she wasn't less of a Christian for that. She had to change her name. She couldn't go to school. She had to leave the country. She was seen naked by strangers. She was violated. And her father, her Daddy called her a whore. Then, after he wronged her, he waited for her to come to him first. He acknowledged his fault but he should have come hat in his hand to do that before. And he shouldn't have downplayed what happened to her. "That wasn't fair," he said about Stephen lying to flourish while she couldn't even go to school in peace. "He was eighteen." So was she. And, like she said he had many, many years between eighteen and thirty to come clean, but he waited. But she was supposed to do handstands because after he amassed the protection of wealth and reputation, he FINALLY comes clean. Nope. I liked Stephen but it was an "in spite of" like, not the like I'm used to feeling for heroes. So, I said all that to say I liked it but I wish we were more careful with how we treat survivors of sexual violation ESPECIALLY in Christian fiction.

Another amazing job by Rhonda McKnight!!! Tamar and Stephen were friends since the age of six. A video was shown of Tamar and Stephen and she became known due to the video that was put on You Tube. Tamar ran away from her hometown and changed her name. Stephen was a professional football player and lived his life, but he was missing Tamar. Twelve years later she shows up at their reunion with a ton of hate towards Stephen. Tamar was angry but she called on God to get her through. With God ALL things are possible. Excellent story!!!

You know you are reading a great book when you pull out the Bible to read the scripture. That does not often happen for me. Rhonda McKnight's latest offering is a great testimony about the importance of grace and forgiveness. Stephen Pierce is a stellar athlete on track to get an award for living out his Christian convictions...except for there is this little thing in his past that could stop him dead in his tracks. Tamar Johnson has been burned by social media which included changing her name. her old friend Stephen reached out to her on social media causing a whirlwind of trouble. Can these two let bygones be bygones and embrace what God has for them? You'll have to read it and see. Great book.

Sometimes something happens to us that makes us feel life as we know it is over. Tamar Jackson has an experience like this and she knows just who did it... Stephen Pierce, her high school sweetheart and prom date. What happens when Tamar is forced to face Stephen and deal with this issue at her high school reunion?I found this book to be short and sweet but intriguing. It deals with themes of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. I was satisfied at the end of the book but would really like to know what happens with Stephen and Tamar after The Winter Reunion ends.

The Winter Reunion (Restoration Series Book 1) is a good tale about forgiveness, enduring feelings and pride. Tamar has a lot to forgive and for years she held on to anger through avoidance of those she loved, who loved her. But those get no pass, either, they also had things to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella by RHONDA McKnight and look forward to the others in the series. Rhonda McKnight delivers a beautiful and timely Christmas story. It is a story of forgiveness and love. It is just what we need in this holiday season. This is the story of Tamar and Stephen high school sweethearts who let a viral video tear them apart. It's now years later and Tamar is a journalist and Stephen a big football star. It's the weekend of their high school reunion and Tamar has been sent to do a story on Stephen. Once their paths cross will she forgive him or not. You must read to find out.

If you want to read about faith and forgiveness this book is for you. Loved how the author used her faith to create a love story around the characters Tamar and Stephen. The book was real . If this would happen to you, you would totally understand what Tamar was dealing with. Stephen was man of faith and trusted the Lord in giving him another chance to win back Tamar.

Wow! Tamar and Stephen's story is beautiful! I was so prepared to hate Stephen.From page 1, with the scripture, I knew I was in for a great story. I loved the discussion Tamar had with her father about her name. Such beauty, and such a blessed moment to know who you are and what your name means.Such an encouraging story. Such strength. Thanks Ms Rhonda this book!
