I just got this and its HUGE! Not a logical size for a day planner. Think text book. Can't fit into my purse. Also, nothing helpful at all for equestrians besides a place that says "barn notes". Nothing else helpful to a horse owner. I will be returning because I can't commit to something this large all year.

This is an interesting twist on time travel. I had read it years before in paperback. However, I was disappointed with the Kindle version. The story has been edited and abridged! I am aware of at least 3 (pretty important) scenes which are in the original but that do not appear in the Kindle version.Is the author's estate aware you made these changes??

For twenty years or more, Crichton was king of the sci-fi thriller genre. His creative genius is splashed across many books that I would easily rate 5-stars. This is just not one of them. I loved the detail he put into the setup and operation of the system that allows the characters to travel in time. But one of the problems with any time travel book is that you have to decide where to focus the bulk of the story - on the aspects of time travel, or on the adventures at the destination time period? Crichton chose the latter, which led to a book about 14th century France. If you like that time period, you'll probably enjoy the book. It's well written, but I was hoping for more science fiction and less historical drama.

I had such high hopes for the movie when it came out. But, of course, they ruined it. Not like other books you read that are great novels and would be very difficult to capture the feeling you get reading it. The great movie is right there written in the book. They just need to try reading it. Anyway, the grittyness of the dark ages is so real in this that you wonder how anyone survived back then. Definitely not like an Errol Flynn movie. Nobody spoke English, the knights are built like body builders, and if you’re caught in the woods, you’re assumed to be a bandit and immediately killed. Dang. It’s good.

I enjoyed this book so well that I give it AS MANY as 4 stars. However, there were several things that frustrated me, thus, ONLY 4 stars.I am not especially scientifically minded, so the explanation of how the quantum physics worked was lost on me. Just had to 'believe' that it worked.Mostly (ie. transcription errors).Although the personalities of the characters were described well, we don't get to know them well enough to believe in them. For example: In the present, Marek is well versed in jousting and swordplay. However, it seems unbelievable to think that he would be better than the knights that actually lived doing these things - they needed to in order to save their lives. In the present, Kate is a mountain climber - a good one. However, it's a bit of a stretch to believe that she could climb around the outside of the castle wall or jump 5 feet to the next rafter of a ceiling and not fall. Chris is pretty believable.The action was smooth and could be followed easily. However, when the trio got into desperate circumstances, there were too many times that they were saved JUST in time. ... I liked that though Marek lived in a different universe, it was so closely like the universe that he came from that his 'death stone' gave a satisfying ending to his life.

*****SPOILERS*****Early on the characters start out going into painful details about quantum mechanics that, even as a serious Sci-Fi fan, I found tedious and booing. Then they make a SERIOUS, and rather stand-out point that time travel is impossible and they are actually traveling into alternate universes... OK!! I can get with that! The fact that alternate universes would exist in different time periods (they travel to an alternate universe which exists in the 1300s.) seemed very strange, but I was willing to go with it. I mean it IS fiction, I'll go with your unique twist on how alternate universes exist. But when a person who traveled to an alternate universe was able to leave a "Help Me" note in a pile of old parchments in the 1300s which is found in THIS universe, it took a turn that made NO Sense at ALL.After that, the book just goes on and on and on in the 1300s and nothing actually happens.. it's a game of tag. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Get into a fight. Run. Hide. Get Captured. Escape. Just trying to waste time in the book (about 50% of it) until the machine automatically returns home.I powered through the last 3/4 of the book just waiting to get to what I expected was a Twist ending discovering that the scientists misinterpreted the "Alternate Universe" theory and they WERE actually traveling back in time.... but no. The characters returned home from the alternate universe only to check out the grave of one of their party members who stayed behind... which, AGAIN, WOULDN'T EXIST IN THIS UNIVERSE.Characters: Not interestingStory: Not interestingSci-fi: Nonsensical.

I first read this book a few weeks ago while doing laundry at my apartment complex. It was a book very hard to put down once you start. I know I couldn't. It got me hooked. Also, I had gotten to know the author through Jurassic Park, the book, and countless others, I knew his work would be an ideal choice! No disappointment there! I have to say, having read the book, I found that it is way better than the movie. But then again, there were so much information in the book that it would be hard to put them all in a movie.

It’s great that so many people love this book, but I disagree totally. It’s interminable and written poorly. My first Crichton, so I don’t know his style, and obviously it clicks with millions of people. For me, it never seemed to end, I didn’t care about the characters, and there are times when research for the 14th Century scenes seems to have come straight out of Shrek. The premise is fantastic, but the execution clunky and simplistic, I felt. Very disappointed.

Ahhhh! That ending! I am in love all over again with this series. Kage you are a boss! I loved that last chapter so much! There is no way that I can see it as the ending when really it was an epic beginning!Now, there were some parts that were totally sad to read. I cannot imagine what Kage must have felt, about everything he went through in life. He is such a strong man to be able to just keep living and doing what he loves (including Jamie lol) to know he was manipulated so badly by his uncle was surreal. How could a man be so horrible to his nephew? To control him in every aspect, to try and force him to live a life of unhappiness just because it didn't fit with his plan was sickening. I was so glad when he was out of the picture.Jamie as always was so adorable, I was happy to read how comfortable he was with Kage now that they were finally reunited how they were supposed to be. Daddy Atwood still takes the cake as my favourite family member. And I was so happy to read that Daddy Atwood gave Kage the "talk" .... Sigh how adorable.Now I just want to read about them all married with kids, or dogs or even gold fish. Their lives are really only now beginning and I am so happy for them. At the end of this book, it definitely put a smile on my face (after the roller coaster of emotions that is lol) I loved it. 5 beautiful stars!

Audiobook Review:I am writing this review after listening to all three books in this series. Be aware, this is one long story broken up into three books. I really enjoyed Kage and Jamie's story, although I did not always like Kage. He is by no means a warm and fluffy MC; but he does have his moments of vulnerability. I have to say he reminds a lot of Sam Kage in Mary Calmes' Matter of Time series. He is a dominant, alpha male and doesn't always treat Jamie very well. Jamie, who doesn't even know he could be attracted to men until he meets Kage, is a natural submissive and enjoys Kage's rough sex and dirty talk. They are very hot together and the romance is a roller coaster ride of angst, miscommunication, danger and hurt on both sides and moments of tenderness and love. Jamie also has a few TSTL moments; which really drive me crazy at points.Kage has PTSD from a childhood trauma which is revealed until the 3rd book and brings out his very "dark side". Kage is also trying to make it big in the MMA scene, while trying to keep his relationship with Jamie a secret; but really wanting to tell everyone. He goes back and forth on that. Jamie's struggle revolves around coming to grips with the fact he loves a man, questioning his slightly masochistic needs, and keeping the relationship secret for Kage's benefit, but also his own. It is quite a compelling listen.J.F. Harding puts in a masterful performance of both these characters. Again, if you liked Paul Morey's performance of Sam Kage, you will really enjoys Mr. Harding's performance. His characterization of Kage and Jamie, in addition to all the supporting voices, is right on point and he really brought this story to life. Highly recommend.

It was everything the first two were and so much more.Kage Unmasked is written using both MC's point of view. You get to see what sweet sexy Jamie and hot hunky Kage are thinking and feeling.This just makes this book so much more fascinating and gripping.There are moments were I was giggling to myself, my heart was breaking and some intense "oh crap" moments.Yep this book has a little bit of everything in it.I don't do spoilers but I will say you are in for one hell of a roller coaster ride.I love the book, in fact this has become my favourite series and it is one I will love reading over and over.Maris Black you have done it again!!!If you haven't read this series do your a favour and go get it.You will not be sorry!

There are MMA fighters. There are thugs. There are two guys who have a thing for rough sex. Of course this book is....intense!I loved this book; I loved this series. I was on the edge of my seat at times. My jaw was hanging open at times and yes, I literally gasped in the silence of my own living room. Jamie is indeed the naive person Kage has claimed he was. Kage is indeed the dangerous fighter he has claimed to be. There are people around them who try to manipulate and orchestrate their lives and they do some damage. Kage has had a metric f-ton of sadness in his life and Jamie is the BEST thing he's ever had. And the people who messed Kage up aren't done yet.But Kage is a boss. He has lived for years with a ruthless psychopath. He's had to learn a trick or two. And Kage, as a fighter, has the instinct to 'see' what his opponent's move is going to be and to know what he has to do as a counter-move. That works for him in the octagon and it works for him in life. Honestly don't have enough words to describe how much I loved these characters, these plots, these twists, these everything!

I have now read all three books in Ms Black's Kage trilogy. In my opinion they were well written, full of ironic twists which are sometimes to be predicted but remain useful, nonetheless. Some might find that the exploration of the "inner life" of the characters slows the pace of the books but in my opinion it is this very quality that lifts this and the other volumes above the other books in the M/M genre.. Yes, there is plenty of explicit sexual content but it is the emotional dimensions which lift her characters above the ordinary. The responses and reaction are oft times insightful, wrought with tension, and at other times amusing. Ms Black has a wonderful gift with expressive metaphors which often encapsulate the situation perfectly. I would definitely recommend the third book in the trilogy as behind a respectable conclusion to the saga of Kage, the Machine.

Now I know no one likes to think about death and it’s not like I’m an old man or anything. I’m only in my early 30s. However, I’m not the type of guy that likes to leave things unfinished, or until the last minute and recently all the talk about healthcare and life insurance floating around all over the news. Also got me thinking about my last will and testament now as I say I don’t plan on actually needing one anytime soon. However, I view a last will and testament as though it is just as important as life and health insurance because honestly you never know when your time is up. And honestly, it’s a pretty important subject as funerals cost thousands of dollars as well as medical expenses, etc. and because of this I started looking into how to put together a last will and testament it would be practical for my current lifestyle and age, but could be updated as necessary to reflect the growth of the family or other responsibilities.Wanting to know more about the process of creating a last will and testament. I went looking for some basic entry-level information and came across this book while searching Amazon’s website (it’s my favorite online bookstore) and I’m glad I did this little 29 page volume contained everything I wanted to know about the proper way to create a binding last will and testament. This book covers everything from the fundamentals of understanding how a will works and your legal rights and responsibilities of a last will and testament, as well as other information such as how to keep the cost low (as attorneys are generally required to create a legally recognized last will and testament) as well as things such as keeping your will, up to date and how to create a living will. A living will, can also contain things like a DNR (do not resuscitate) or other answers to medical questions such as donating your organs or tissues or what to do with your care if you develop a cognitive memory problem such as Alzheimer’s or brain trauma and who in your family would like to have power of attorney and be capable of making such important decisions on your behalf. ah, joseph mitchell...one of the cornerstones upon which the New Yorker was built.absolutely first rate, timeless writing about all sorts of subjects and a link to a long forgotten and wonderful time in NYC when you could get a 50 cent breakfast at a diner and everybody smoked everywhere and jews on the lower east side sold pickles and the cops were all irish and the women were all dames who weren't allowed in McSorley's . i'm not saying it celebrates sexism, i'm saying it captures new york in the forties and fifties.mitchell seeks out the lesser known aspects of new york life: gypsy families and lazy hot afternoons in the park and street preachers and kooks.his writing is graceful and elegant but simple and direct at the same time. just tells it like it is but with flair and no phony 'look at me! i'm a writer!' stuff.

I pride myself on the amount of reading I have done about New York City but I have to admit that my experience with Joseph Mitchell was extremely limited. I don't know why. It wasn't intentional; it just happened. So, I finally picked up this book, and now, wow! A part of me is full of regret: I had been missing so much. On the other hand, I am experiencing the writing of this great essayist and storyteller for the first time. And as with everything in life that is pleasurable, the first time is usually the best. I am living it up.Joseph Mitchell and his people occupied a New York before my time. (Even though he had passed away when I was quite young, he hadn't published much for years because of his infamous writer's block.) What Mitchell presents is the dirt under New York's fingernails. The characters all live on the cliched fringes of the metropolis. And if they weren't the patrons of McSorley's or some dive or flophouse, they were just as iconic as The Empire State Building or a Lower East Side tenement. As others have mentioned, the Joe Gould essay is as poignant and fascinating as essays get.When I had first heard of Mitchell and his milieu, the words grittiness and realism always seemed to be the adjectives surrounding his work. Immediately, the photographs of the legendary Arthur "Weegee" Fellig came to my mind. However, after reading these tales, this comparison utterly falls on its face. Weegee's works, as much as I admire them, were often staged, and even the ones that weren't have a self-conscious shock value attached. Mitchell's "grittiness" and "realism" is actually naturalist. There is an acceptance, respect and grace to his subjects, and in the writing surrounding the people and places he is describing for us. He had no need to embellish or stage anything. And, for me, a first time reader, this is the biggest source of my enjoyment.Nice meeting you, Mr. Mitchell. And thanks.

One of my favorite collections of true stories from NYC in the mid third of the 20th century. Joe Mitchell was one of the most interesting staff writers at the excellent "New Yorker" magazine. Whatever the subject matter of his stories, I am interested in them to the point where I can't put them down. Since first reading this collection upon its initial printing in about 1992, I have visited NYC 7 times just to walk the streets and visit places that he writes about. (I took in a few shows and museums as well). Much of this New York is gone, but sometimes you look down a lower Manhattan street lined with old buildings and one of his stories comes flooding back. McSorley's wonderful saloon is a good example. From stuff found on the bottom of the harbor to exploring the old abandoned hotel of the title story, to the life and culture of city gypsies and climbing an old clock tower or exploring a freedman's 19th century graveyard on Long Island, I love this collection.

Mr Mitchell is an amazing storyteller. . The titles are unusual, such as "Mr. Hunter's Grave". And "McSorley's Wonderful Saloon". In all of[them, it's as if you were there with him and listening to it all. Most of his stories are from the 1930s and 1940s. The date is listed at theend of each story. I remember visiting Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus on 42nd Street as a Teenager. He describes his visit in"Lady Olga". True story, the Fleas were real. Do not miss a chance to read this book.

If I had to take only five books with me into the next life, this would be one of them.

This is a huge collection of Mitchell's writing -- both fiction and non-fiction. I enjoyed the non-fiction much more, but it is all worth reading.I read it over several weeks, a piece or two at a time, and it was always a pleasure to enter his world. Especially interesting was his piece on Joe Gould, a local character who was supposedly working on a massive work of oral history. In "Professor Sea Gull," Mitchell describes Gould, his project, and his unusual lifestyle. In Mitchell's final published work, "Joe Gould's Secret," he revisits the story after Gould's death. Although he would live thirty more years, it was the last thing Mitchell ever published, making his look into Gould's failure to complete his work even more haunting.Highly recommended to those who enjoy 20th century history, personal profiles, or excellent writing. Mitchell's style is so graceful and easy to read that it is easy to miss how much of a style it really is.

I was having a copy sent to a good friend, a fine writer himself, who had not known of Mitchell or his work before.Unfortunately, the new paperback copy I ordered for him arrived missing every page, including the table of contents, up to page thirteen, my friend reported on receiving the book. (I photocopied and sent to him the missing pages from my own volume of the same edition. But I think Amazon ought to send him a new copy, with all the pages included.)
