I really enjoyed this book about the experiences of a Canadian intelligence officer during the first world war. His personality is quirky, fun, bubbly, loud, unpolished, but who also loves food and wine. One clearly sees the huge differences between a typical colonial officer and the more snobby English officers who are more refined! This bubbly character leads to many funny situations but also serious incidents with English officers in the story. It clearly show how terrible the war in the trenches were and how badly the war was being led by senior officers at the time. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel and the colonials come to the rescue. The characters in the book both fiction and non-fiction are brought cleverly to life in a war situation. To conclude I highly recommend this book on the first world war and personally I am looking forward to the sequel.
What an intriguing and well-written book this is! For those who are interested in the important piece of history that WW1 is, Darrell Duthie's book is a very interesting read for sure. But the fascinating part is how Malcolm MacPhail, the quirky, ironic and cynical main character painstakingly unveils the futility of this great war. Between the lines, the message seems a clear protest against the stupidity of some high ranked snobs hiding in their castles while sacrificing so many soldiers. Some of the characters might be the product of the author's imagination, yet the book tells the true story of the war with such passion for detail and human touch - pulling the reader right into the scene. Although we all know how this particular part of history ended, the story is thrilling until the very end. And I can't wait for Mr. Duthie to finish his sequel! Warmly recommended.
Well researched and interesting story that puts the protagonist at some of the key points in the British lines during the Great War.Good use of actual historical characters without abusing the privilege.
I chose this rating because it was a cracking good story told in a very unique way. I felt like I was sitting snugly in a warm pub as for the price of a few drinks I was being told this story. Looking forward to another session as soon as I am in town again and can visit this pub again.
Very good account of ww1 strategy with a few from a individual . If you are a military history reader , you will enjoy this book.
Both the MacPhail books are written in a style I find enjoyable to read. And the author's obvious attention to historical accuracy kept me in the moment, looking over the shoulders of the troops. Satisfying read - I want more.
This novel is simply the best World War 1 novel that I've ever read. I hope the author writes an entire series taking the hero from the beginning of the war forward. Highest rating.
