Review

"This is an original philosophical polemic that teaches concepts, convinces us of the validity of revolutionary planning and action, and makes a crucial redefinition of the relationship between utopia and human reality."—Hermann Rebel, York University, Toronto"Remains a significant touchstone for leftist design scholars tackling eco-political problems and the counterculture."—Simon Sadler, Room One Thousand"To design in an environment is to design an environment. Design, Nature, and Revolution is an intense reckoning with both the impossibility and inevitability of this state of affairs."—Larry Busbea, from the Foreword"Design, Nature, and Revolution is a brilliant example of how to handle large-scale ideas in compact arguments."—ARTFORUM"Seventy pages of brisk essays and fifty-five pages of notes: Maldonado writes this book with the speed of a polemic and the resources of a thesis. He argues that only a sophisticated reform of the designed environment, using the most developed methods, is adequate, and he dismisses the simplifying theories of alienation and the slogans of ecology."—The Nation

Because i enjoyed some of this author's other books, I ordered this trilogy. That was a mistake. I should have noticed that these were his debut and not jump into it with both feet! I managed to finish the three books eventually, mainly by taking a dispassionate interest in what might have made the books better. First, they could be shorter, as mentioned in previous reviews. All the near misses and miraculous rescues became redundant. Also redundant were some of the battle scenes. Too many arrows and spears ended up in eyes and necks for it to be credible. Also detracting from credibility was an overuse of divination and omens. One of the main characters, the Etruscan, never came to life for me. It was hard to know what he was about. And some of the other characters simply fell apart by the second volume and totally disintegrated in the third. Most of all, I kept looking in the author's notes in all three volumes about the author's characterizing Cesar as a rapist. And Anthony being characterized as a nasty bully. No mention was made at all about whether there were historical facts on which to base such character assassinations or whether this was his own fantasy. This, most of all, I find amazing when the book is supposed to be a historical fiction!!

The blurb on the dust jacket should have tipped me off, so it is my fault that I bought this book. The blurb says that Ben Kane is 'writing in the cinematic style'. Boy is that ever an understatement. It reads like a mediocre movie outline of the 'sandal and sword' variety. For example (pg 353)..."Silence fell on the arena. The audience held its breath as the secutor prepared to end the fight. Suddenly the retiarius gasped and looked over his enemy's shoulder. Confused, the hunter turned his gaze away for a single heartbeat. It was enough. There is a lot of gasping, deep breaths, and fighting, to say the least. If that is what you are looking for you will love this book. If you want a more measured type of historical novel seek out Stephen Dando-Collins or Adrian Goldsworthy. I hope though, that Mr Kane gets his movie deal.

well written novel based on historical info. Historical references were well documented. Shows the extensive commercial, diplomatic and military connections in the ancient eastern world. History isn't in isolation. Geo-political entries were connected in antiquity. Research has a long way to go to explore these themes more.

This book is an ok read. I much prefer Colleen McCullough's books on ancient Rome as they are much more detailed and contain more description of the city streets, houses, smells, foods, people, etc. The Forgotten Legion does have some suspenseful moments, but I guess I was looking for more of the history of the time in which it takes place. Also, I thought the book would cover more about how these soldiers marched to the end of the known world and what happened once they got there. The beginning mentions how there is a part of China where there are blond people living that are supposedly the decendants of this Legion. Its also alittle too easy how Fabiola is sold into a brothel and she adjusts to this life quite easily. I know she was a slave and didn't have much choice, but it was alittle contrived how she ends up being the most sought after prostitute there in a matter of months. Also how her brother ends up a top Gladiator after being at the Ludus for a few months. Maybe the second book is better and will talk more of their travels.

I absolutely love Roman history especially around the time of Julius Caesar and I am thoroughly happy that I've found an author with the common interest! I've never heard of Ben Kane before and I actually found this book on a library shelf with nothing special to make it stand out besides the plume on the helmet... I picked it up and within the first 3 chapters knew that this series and this author had outstanding promise!!! I was not disappointed. I bought this book as well as the rest in the series and am now working on obtaining his other 2 series, Hannibal and Spartacus! If you love Roman history and would enjoy a fictional tale that envelopes the time period, then stop right now and buy this book. I promise you that you will not be disappointed!

Read the last two in the series.Although fictional, I found them an interesting window in the era. Now to read the first book. Hey, it's unorthodox, but that is just me. I don't enjoy just the ending a structured trip but dissect the pieces along the way even if segmented and out of the sequence. I often eat desert first, before the main course too. I wish the ending was happier but probably closer to what would be a reality in a long story.

read all three book within a week. I kept telling myself that i would put the book down after "this chapter". next thing i know i'm done with the series

Eciting read and a real page turner. This was a book I could not put down. Every time I got to the end of a chapter, I found myself making compromises with myself to read just one more. Ben Kane has really captured the spirit of Rome and takes you through the streets with a story that makes you feel like you are there. I love Kane's writing style of basing his fictional story on factual researched settings. Even the plot is loosly based on recorded events.

This whole 50-state series is exceptionally well produced, from the quality semigloss paper stock to the cute state-specific repeating motif endpaper designs. The text is both ample and informative, but the real delight is in the many (necessarily smallish but well-chosen) gorgeously reproduced pictures! All aspects of the state's artistic heritage and ongoing activities are represented. A solid general introduction and timeline sets the reader up to appreciate the subsequent themed sections and their appealing images within a broad historical context. These titles make useful pocket companions and itinerary planners for state-wide art appreciation forays. You'll enjoy this one -- and want to collect the set!

An inspiring look at an interesting person.

Great book. I lost my fist one years ago. If ya like basketball it's great!!!! Great shape and delivered before due date..

I have always been a fan of Pete Maravich and was able to meet him and get his autograph in the summer of 1971. I had read a biography of Pete prior to readin Heir to a Dream. Initially, I felt Pete's dad Press had been a real slave driver when it came to the basketball training he gave Pete. Instead, reading Pete's book, I saw how eager Pete was to please his father and how much he loved him. In fact the times each of them was most successful, was when they worked together. I truly enjoyed this inside perspective of Pete's life. No true fan will be disappointed in this book!

fantastic story of what life is all about

THERE WILL NEVER NEVER EVER EVER BE ANOTHER PISTOL PETE PRESS MARAVICH.HE WAS THE GREATEST SHOOTER BALLHANDLER AND PASSER PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL HAS EVER SEEN.OR FOR THAT MATTER WILL SEE. CASE CLOSED!!!

Review

"Junger has raised one of the most provocative ideas of this campaign season--and accidentally written one of its most intriguing political books."―The New York Times"There are three excellent reasons to read Sebastian Junger's new book: the clarity of his thought, the elegance of his prose, and the provocativeness of his chosen subject. Within a compact space, the sheer range of his inquiry is astounding."―S. C. Gwynne, New York Times bestselling author of Rebel Yell and Empire of the Summer Moon"Sebastian Junger has turned the multifaceted problem of returning veterans on its head. It's not so much about what's wrong with the veterans, but what's wrong with us. If we made the changes suggested in TRIBE, not only our returning veterans, but all of us, would be happier and healthier. Please read this book."―Karl Marlantes, New York Times bestselling author of Matterhorn and What It Is Like to Go to War"Junger uses every word in this slim volume to make a passionate, compelling case for a more egalitarian society."―Booklist"The author resists the temptation to glorify war as the solution to a nation's mental ills and warns against the tendency "to romanticize Indian life," but he does succeed in showing "the complicated blessings of 'civilization,' " while issuing warnings about divisiveness and selfishness that should resonate in an election year. The themes implicit in the author's bestsellers are explicit in this slim yet illuminating volume."―Kirkus Reviews"Thought-provoking...a gem."―The Washington Post"TRIBE is an important wake-up call. Let's hope we don't sleep through the alarm."―Minneapolis Star Tribune"Compelling...Junger...offers a starting point for mending some of the toxic divisiveness rampant in our current political and cultural climate."―The Boston Globe"Junger argues with candor and grace for the everlasting remedies of community and connectedness."―O Magazine"TRIBE is a fascinating, eloquent and thought-provoking book..packed with ideas...It could help us to think more deeply about how to help men and women battered by war to find a new purpose in peace."―The Times of London

An excellent and thought provoking book, that for me, had almost immediate applications in my own life. He does an excellent job of articulating things that had floated on the edges of my own consciousness for quite some time.In my opinion it's HUGE mistake to think this book is a treatise, let alone a single topic analysis on PTSD. It's not even about PTSD, even if it comes up in some sections. I saw the author speak last week and believe me, that wasn't what he focused on by any stretch. Sure, he uses his time with soldiers and interviews vets (plus many others touched by war in various ways) as jumping off points to look at the broader societal issues. But it's a jumping off point, not the actual topic.Tribe is really an analysis of the slow disintegration of our evolutionary impulses to cooperate and seek one another's support as we work towards a common good. It's not an American problem, or even a Western civilization one, but the intended consequence of modernity, dating back at least few hundred years. Obviously recent decades have made this isolation and dissolution of our collective cohesion much worse, and Junger does a really thoughtful job of looking at it from a whole range of perspectives.

Upon reading Junger’s article in a recent Vanity Fair article on the affects of PTSD (it’s not exclusive to just war veterans, by the way), I was under the assumption that a large portion of this book would be dedicated to that. I was wrong. Sebastian dove much deeper than that.Tribe focuses on the growing disconnect we’re experiencing with one another as a society, and the far reaching consequences of that disconnect. It’s an eye-opening letter to the American public that politely reminds us that we’ve lost our way when it comes to being a closer knit community as a whole. Not always, of course. In his book, he touches on how tragedies such as 9/11 brings us closer - albeit briefly. But once the dust settles, we fall back to our old ways. This is not a book about war, the military, or PTSD. It’s about the loss of belonging, caring for our fellow man as we do about the ones closest to us. He uses a parable about a brief encounter he has with a homeless man as a young adult. The man sees that he’s on a backpacking trip on his own and asks if he has enough food for his trip. The young Junger, afraid of being mugged for his supplies, lies and tells the man that he has just a little food to last him. The homeless man tells Junger he’ll never make it on what he has and hands him his lunch bag that he more than likely received from a homeless shelter - probably the only meal the homeless man would have the entire day. Sebastian feels horrible about himself after that, but uses that lesson as a parable for Tribe.Think of your fellow man before thinking of yourself. Because without that sense of humanism, togetherness, belonging, we’re all dead inside.

I have long wondered why when it was time for me to return to America from Vietnam I was apprehensive, perhaps even a bit frightened. Mr. Junger answered my question. I left my tribe. Now, years later, a libertarian-conservative, I had even allowed myself to hold the political left in contempt. This book shames me and I suspect that in that regard the book will even affect change in me.I'm supposed to be writing about this book, not myself, but for me the book was not just interesting and informative. It opened up something long suppressed and I am grateful. If you are a vet you should read it. If you are so highly partisan that you regard those other guys as evil, please read it.It's not just a good book.

I'll be frank. I've not been a big fan of Junger's previous books, but in this book he puts his finger on one of the most important cultural realities of the twenty-first century, the loss of tight-knit communities. Certainly, Robert Putnam (in his important book BOWLING ALONE) and others have documented similar realities, but Junger's work stands out for two reasons: 1) it is immensely accessible and 2) he arrives at this conclusion from a unique perspective, that of his observation of the military experience. One of his central themes is the idea that soldiers in combat situations have such an intense experience of interdependency, solidarity and community that they often struggle upon returning to civilian life in the US, in which there rarely is any similar sort of community to which they can belong.TRIBE is well-worth reading for pointed socio-political questions it asks about American civic life and for the keen observations it makes about the combat experience. Thankfully, Junger doesn't offer any easy fixes, but on the other hand, he doesn't do much to stir our imaginations about how to cultivate in American civilian life the sort of solidarity that combat engenders. At times, he does tend toward idealizing the Native American experience of tribal life, and that sort of idealism won't be particularly helpful for addressing the dissolution of community that we so intensely experience. Regardless, this is a timely book that should not only widely read, but also widely discussed.

Wonderful read! This was exactly what I have been looking for and I loved it. Coming of age or getting to know who you are. Seeing yourself through the eyes of other people. Falling in love. This is how a true YA novel should be done. I kept smiling and frowning through the whole book. Thouroughly enjoying every wird, every page. So refreshing, so right. Thank you! I've said this before but adult books really should take note on how to tell a story in the right pace, with enough depth to the characters lika book like this actually does. The romance is very subtle, but you can FEEL it so much. And then everythingelse besides the romance. I'm so content right now!

Although some aspects of Sarah Dessen's heroines are out of reach for most (think 2 parent families in good suburban neighborhoods; think "unattainably beautiful"), I really love that she included a sadder, uglier, and unfortunately far more universal theme of rape and what we go through in an attempt to move on from an event that changes our lives for the worse.

PROS1.) It's truthful, honest, witty, and well written2.) It's one of those books that makes you actually feel the anger, happiness, shock, etc of the characters, which is very rare in a book, and very hard to do.3.) Makes you want to just keep reading and finish it already because your dying to know what happens, but you also don't want it to end because you're enjoying the book/ reading it somuch, also very rare and hard to do. CONS1.) Sometimes in books (and this is just my opinion, and I am not trying to be rude or judgmental) you just get sick of hearing the same thing over and over again, and sometimes you need to have a little bit of a surprise here and there. (Again, just my opinion) (I felt that this book, even though there are many pros and cons, and I don' t think that with with either one can outweigh the other, given the fact that everyone has a different opinion,) was, in my opinion, was sort of predictable on some accounts.2.) This may be just because I have read better material, given the fact that I am constantly reading, but I think that this book could've been made better. Now, I am not saying this to offend the author or the readers, because I myself am a writer and I don't want to be rude, but I think that the book, if written a little differently, could be much better if there were some things added. I am not saying to change the original story line, which I think is very good, but to, let's say, spice it up a little bit. Obviously since the story has already been written it can't be changed, but I feel it could have been better this way.3.) Lastly, I think that this story sort of pales in comparison with Sarah Dessen's other books, such as, Along for the Ride, Dreamland, Keeping the Moon, etc. Don' t get me wrong, it's a good book, but in my opinion she has written far better books. Overall I think that Just Listen is a good book, but maybe for younger or less advanced readers.(Again, this is just me stating my opinion and I am not trying to be rude, and I have read very advanced material, so it may be normal for me to feel this way.) It has its pros and cons just like any other book, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I'm just stating mine. So, I guess in other words that while I enjoyed the book, I would've enjoyed it much better if there were some changes made to it.Written by Grace Will (age 11)

How many white lies do you tell in a day? And why do you feel you need to lie to your friends, your family? Why say "I'm fine" when your really breaking apart inside? This is what this book addresses.Annabel is a girl who's stuck in the middle. She has a terrible secret which she desperately needs to tell, but she doesn't know how to. When her sister gets anorexic, Annabel needs to be the strong one. She needs to continue doing something she's beginning to despise to keep her mother happy and from falling apart. But Annabel realises that she is the one that is threatening to fall apart. When something terrible happens, she becomes an outcast at school. She's the hot topic among everyone around her, and those she thought she could trust are the ones running the rumour mill. But when Annabel starts talking to Owen, a music-obsessed, completely honest outcast like herself, Annabel begins to see the light. Don't think or judge, just listen. And Owen slowly but surely helps Annabel confront her fears and face the light, holding her hand along the way. This is a very sweet, very light read. If you're looking for something to read that isn't part of a series and doesn't have any complicated plot or characters, this is the book to read. however I would recommend it to a younger age, maybe 13-14-15, as I did find that it was a little too young for me (19), but again, it was something I still enjoyed.

On first glance I didn't think I would enjoy this novel. It involves topics I did not think I would be interested in: rape, eating disorders, anger management. The male character is not the attractive, charming young man one would expect. It is very different from Dessen's other books--darker, and though not as deep or meaningful as The Truth About Forever, it deals with issues most people wish to ignore as too intense or unpleasant and I learned a lot from it. I found this novel a surprisingly enjoyable and rewarding read. I learned a lot that I had not previously realized about the world around me and saw things from Annabel's point of view. It did not have the typical ending I would have expected--I was pleasantly surprised on that count as well. I especially love the way Dessen incorporated characters from two previous novels (my two favorites, as it happens). This is overall a great read. Some mature content, ages 15+.

I am not a rock hound - I don't know much of anything about rocks, but my husband and I camp a lot and have often found interesting rocks we wished we could identify. THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE BOOK! It has a picture on every page, and explanation of how to test for rock hardness (one of the ways to identifying a rock) and other sections about geologic formations (my favorite part and I am often fascinated by a landscape and wish I knew how it came about. The book is small, sturdy, really a treat to look at. It will go in our camping and hiking gear along with our bird and plant books.Lovely.

Nice format and interesting information on rocks and minerals. I'm new to the world of rocks and minerals so the detailed information about the formations of minerals and where they are found in North America was fascinating to read.

Yes, it's a pocket guide, but it's just too small and thin to cover anything but the smallest fraction of varieties and only those in the most superficial detail. I found it to be of almost no use. The much better option: Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals. Many more photos and detailed descriptions. It's thicker but doesn't take up much more space.

Beautiful examples that are helpful in identifying what we find on hikes in our area and other adventures--will be useful for many trips in years to come.

Nice pictures, shorter articles. Makes it easy to read while traveling.

This book is awesome! Beautiful pictures and details about each rock and mineral.

If you are a novice like we are, this is a great easy guide to understanding the differant rocks and minerals. We are newly prospectors and this book has been a great help in understanding what to look for and what we find. Highly reccomended

This is a great book and almost fits into a pocket. It has many explanations and photos of minerals and rocks. My son and I carry it along when out on the banks of the Mississippi to help identify and aid us in rockery.

Easy to read and very helpful!
