If you are having trouble with bulging discs , back pain, knee or shoulder pain, this book is a must. A friend of mine told me about this book when I thought my career as a auto mechanic was over due to chronic back, neck and shoulder pain that was so bad I couldn't lift an air gun. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. The testimonials are from your average person to pro ball players. This method requires you to take several supplements a day, drink plenty of water and do some stretching exercises which are very clearly explained. Within 2 days of doing the stretches for the shoulder my arm pain was nearly completely gone and the strength in my arm was back. Dr Ming is a genius. They should teach this mans knowledge in physical education classes. I had two Dr's that wanted to operate on me to fix my problem. I could go on with this review forever but just trust me, buy this book. It has helped so many people that I've recommended it to. One had been going to physical therapy for 2 years and now, after following this book, he is no longer been milked by his PT.
I bought this book after reading the reviews on Amazon and was not disappointed. My main source of exercise is from practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (which Ming also practiced), and once in a while I develop tightness and pain throughout the back/side of my neck and shoulder that cause tingling and numbness down my arm. The last time this occured, I was in pain for almost two months. Tui na and acupuncture helped in the short term, but after leaving the clinic, the tightness would quickly come back and I would experience pain again; I wasn't getting permanent healing from these treatments. Out of desperation, I was able to find this book and decided to give it a try. It took me about about 10 days before I started feeling much less pain, and this was from following the first step: taking supplements (I only took fish oils, which I never took before folloing this regimen) and drinking 2 liters of water a day. I then began doing the stretches detailed in the book specific to my trouble areas and I was back to normal a week after that. I would say the supplementing and re-hydration process contributed to at least 65 - 70% of my recovery. It really opened my eyes to just how vital that portion was. The stretches do a great job at decompressing the spine and stretching out the muscles/fascia to the point where I can hear it happening. Before this book, I didn't even know what fascia was and just how important it is to muscular system.Fast forward a year later and I'm still practicing BJJ and experiencing the same pain again - which is why writing this review. I stopped taking the fish oil (although I don't recall it being a requirement) and began to stretch less and less frequently after the pain went away (although I'll still do it on and off after classes). I previously completely skipped the strengthening portion of the book, which I feel is a vital part of the prevention portion of this method, and it made me realize why I was back in pain again. Picking the book up again after almost a year, I'm reminded of all the useful information that this book contains. I'm following the regimen again, and it's making a world of difference after several weeks of repeat discomfort and pain. Regardless of what type of exercise or activity you do; if you're experiencing muscular discomfort or pain that is affecting your movement and range of motion, I would recommend you give this book a try.
You can read the most important part of the book in a couple of hours. First you have to do a preparation phase of about 10 days before you begin the stretching. You can begin the myofascial release exercises during the preparation phase, but shouldn't begin the stretches until after the preparation phase. The book was easy to follow; however, if they made any improvements, I would move the stretches to the end of the book to make it flow better. The myofascial release section is a little hard to follow, but after you try it a couple of times and reread it a few, it makes more sense. I believe this will definitely help as I know my issue is with myofascial tightness and pain.
The book needs more diagrams and pictures. It also needs something more specific than start your stretches from the top and work your way down given that they stretches are not described in that order. The section lists the stretches for specific ailments really should have been a table with every stretch in the book in their recommended order, then columns to the right with a check mark if it is recommended for a specific issue.
The exercises are great in relieving nerve pain and muscle tightness that I have had all my life. The supplements were also very helpful in alleviating systemic inflammation. I recommend this book to everyone. The author was kind and helpful, taking time out to correspond with me.
I bought this book from Amazon at least a year ago. This year, I began to have carpal tunnel issues, and noticed that if I did his carpal tunnel exercise (each one takes ONE MINUTE) daily, that symptoms began to subside. Then I started doing the two most important ones which Ming speaks of as being the best of all in the book: the Hip Flexor Stretch, and the Low Back Stretch. Immediately my decades long poor balance began to clear up, my posture automatically straightened up greatly, and my walking gait became freer.I am so delighted w/these short exercises which I do faithfully every night before bed, that I have given up all the taiji I spent 7 years and many hours daily learning and doing.What a great gift; thank you, Ming Chew!!! Ming is an expert in his field. I have purchased this for myself and as gifts for friends. We are at that age where we are getting some periodic aches and pains. It's clear Ming knows his stuff. I plan to systematically work through this book. Some of the testimonials are amazing where people were able to heal themselves and prevent surgery. I hadn't been exposed to the world of myofascia release but the concepts seem sound. I'm exited to get more in depth in this.
