Because i enjoyed some of this author's other books, I ordered this trilogy. That was a mistake. I should have noticed that these were his debut and not jump into it with both feet! I managed to finish the three books eventually, mainly by taking a dispassionate interest in what might have made the books better. First, they could be shorter, as mentioned in previous reviews. All the near misses and miraculous rescues became redundant. Also redundant were some of the battle scenes. Too many arrows and spears ended up in eyes and necks for it to be credible. Also detracting from credibility was an overuse of divination and omens. One of the main characters, the Etruscan, never came to life for me. It was hard to know what he was about. And some of the other characters simply fell apart by the second volume and totally disintegrated in the third. Most of all, I kept looking in the author's notes in all three volumes about the author's characterizing Cesar as a rapist. And Anthony being characterized as a nasty bully. No mention was made at all about whether there were historical facts on which to base such character assassinations or whether this was his own fantasy. This, most of all, I find amazing when the book is supposed to be a historical fiction!!
The blurb on the dust jacket should have tipped me off, so it is my fault that I bought this book. The blurb says that Ben Kane is 'writing in the cinematic style'. Boy is that ever an understatement. It reads like a mediocre movie outline of the 'sandal and sword' variety. For example (pg 353)..."Silence fell on the arena. The audience held its breath as the secutor prepared to end the fight. Suddenly the retiarius gasped and looked over his enemy's shoulder. Confused, the hunter turned his gaze away for a single heartbeat. It was enough. There is a lot of gasping, deep breaths, and fighting, to say the least. If that is what you are looking for you will love this book. If you want a more measured type of historical novel seek out Stephen Dando-Collins or Adrian Goldsworthy. I hope though, that Mr Kane gets his movie deal.
well written novel based on historical info. Historical references were well documented. Shows the extensive commercial, diplomatic and military connections in the ancient eastern world. History isn't in isolation. Geo-political entries were connected in antiquity. Research has a long way to go to explore these themes more.
This book is an ok read. I much prefer Colleen McCullough's books on ancient Rome as they are much more detailed and contain more description of the city streets, houses, smells, foods, people, etc. The Forgotten Legion does have some suspenseful moments, but I guess I was looking for more of the history of the time in which it takes place. Also, I thought the book would cover more about how these soldiers marched to the end of the known world and what happened once they got there. The beginning mentions how there is a part of China where there are blond people living that are supposedly the decendants of this Legion. Its also alittle too easy how Fabiola is sold into a brothel and she adjusts to this life quite easily. I know she was a slave and didn't have much choice, but it was alittle contrived how she ends up being the most sought after prostitute there in a matter of months. Also how her brother ends up a top Gladiator after being at the Ludus for a few months. Maybe the second book is better and will talk more of their travels.
I absolutely love Roman history especially around the time of Julius Caesar and I am thoroughly happy that I've found an author with the common interest! I've never heard of Ben Kane before and I actually found this book on a library shelf with nothing special to make it stand out besides the plume on the helmet... I picked it up and within the first 3 chapters knew that this series and this author had outstanding promise!!! I was not disappointed. I bought this book as well as the rest in the series and am now working on obtaining his other 2 series, Hannibal and Spartacus! If you love Roman history and would enjoy a fictional tale that envelopes the time period, then stop right now and buy this book. I promise you that you will not be disappointed!
Read the last two in the series.Although fictional, I found them an interesting window in the era. Now to read the first book. Hey, it's unorthodox, but that is just me. I don't enjoy just the ending a structured trip but dissect the pieces along the way even if segmented and out of the sequence. I often eat desert first, before the main course too. I wish the ending was happier but probably closer to what would be a reality in a long story.
read all three book within a week. I kept telling myself that i would put the book down after "this chapter". next thing i know i'm done with the series
Eciting read and a real page turner. This was a book I could not put down. Every time I got to the end of a chapter, I found myself making compromises with myself to read just one more. Ben Kane has really captured the spirit of Rome and takes you through the streets with a story that makes you feel like you are there. I love Kane's writing style of basing his fictional story on factual researched settings. Even the plot is loosly based on recorded events.
